  1. I went out and bought an airpump this morning & have it set up already so the water will be nice and oxygen rich from now on!

This tank is not heated & it's stayed pretty consistant between 19-21C. It's a 5 1/2Gal "over-filtered" (using a Tetra Whisper 10-20Gal filter) & without any sponges to tone down the current. It's way faster than my betta's like! The water ripples like mini waves!

I've kept these guys several times.

They love oxygen rich water ,and they love strong current even more. I often had issues with mine swimming up my HOB filters output area if they could reach them ,or swimming into filter tubing. Very silly little fish.

Also I find cold water is very helpful. Without it I've had them survive, but never thrive.

Also I've kept both singles and pairs ,and never really seen a difference in behavior.

They don't make the best algae eaters ,prefering flakes/pellets/worms/etc to plant matter ,but they would nibble at algae time to time.

Also ,how big is your tank ??

  2. Hi all I've been MIA from the forum all summer (too busy to sit at the computer!)... But I've added another tank to our collection....

My oldest has been begging for goldfish for years. A friend rescued some common goldfish from another friend's cichlid tank where they were being harrassed & I took 3 of the 5 from her.

Anyways lastnight was at Big Als to get a new tank hood & more nerite zebra snails & couldn't resist wandering. Well right beside the fancy goldfish was a tankfull of Chinese Butterfly Loaches... & while I don't like the look of other loaches these guys looked cool.

Now does anyone have experience with these guys? The guy there said they do good in with goldfish, but he said getting 1 was ok but everything online says they're happiest in groups of 3-7. Do I need to go get a couple more? I've already desided to add an airstone to the tank as every site online said they like really oxygen rich water.

  3. it's good to know it's not impossible! I've had my group in a betta tank for a month with no mating going on, maybe they're still too young. I only have 1 that's over 1". I did my brackish water to 1.010 according to my hydrometer. the below site said between 1.005-1.010. Definately gonna get a more powerful heater as this one only gets to about 25C.

We will all have to keep in touch!

PS SpruceGrove it's BooBoo (purple with the broken shell) & Pablo the girl Fin took a nip out of the antenna & I immediately put in the quarentine who's mystery egg clutches I'm waiting for them to hatch out!

  4. Ok so b/c my darling bridgesii's are laying clutches it got me thinking why my nerites weren't. Turns out they need brackish water to mate like minimal water current & they're incredibly difficult to breed in captivity.

I thought yesterday what the heck a new challenge would be fun.

So I took some of hubby's hard earned paycheque & added to my tank count.

got a 2gal drum fish bowl, Elite mini filter, a hydrometer, marine salt & used my bettabowl heater (though it's not looking like it will heat this bowl warm enough so today I'm getting a 50watt submersable).

anyone had sucess breeding these pretty snails?

  5. thanks everyone I will for sure be trying to get better pictures of him, but right now he's happily barreling around his tank I think he's happy to be out of the silly little cup! and of a new girl I picked up today b/c I happened to be back there!

My tanks are set up like this in case anyone is worried:

10gal (filtered with a 20i whisper) Veiltail male Fin w/buddies 2 apple snails, 1 baby spixi, 6 julii cory

20gal (filtered with a 20i whisper) 6 female betta sorority (Littler girl, Minnow (1 eyed), Peakaboo, Lilac, Minnow, new girl Silver), 5 habrosus cory

5.5gal (filtered with a 10i whisper) Delta or halfmoon can't deside male: Copper w/buddies 1 apple snail Boo-Boo, 4 panda cory

2gal (filtered with a 1-3gal whisper) SuperDelta male Pretty Boy

5.5gal (filterd with a 10i whisper) apple snail egg clutch grow out tank, right now 2 clutches hatching out artifically b/c they were laid in my sorority tank. Soon will move all my apples over to this tank.

2gal (filterd with an Elite Mini) zebra nerite brackish water bowl. Hoping to breed these cool snails. I've read they're very difficult to breed in captivity but maybe I'll get lucky I love these little ones! I think I have 9.... I should count LOL

oh ya and all of them are heated. kept at 25-26C except for the apple snail which is at 29C.

2 critter keepers as quarentines, as well as a heated 1gal bettabowl.

  6. ok so Pretty Boy has been miserable the last week & a 1/2 in his new 5.5gal tank :( so I accepted that he's just a betta that's happier in the smaller tanks. So I put him back into the 2gal quarentine & within hrs he'd built me a huge bubble nest. Course it just won't do to have an empty fish tank laying around... I was going to use it as a snail grow out as 1 of my mystery's laid an egg clutch but then I know Big Als has a great deal on the 5.5's.... So got a new 5.5 which will go into a brackish tank for my zebra nerite snails, another 2gal to hatch out snails & then this guy for the original 5.5: any ideas on color? he was sold as a halfmoon but I have never seen his color b4.

  7. I thought i was hopeless a week or so ago, but she informed me I wasn't hopeless until I got more bettas.....

    Well my count is now;

    2 males,

5 females contently living in a sorority tank

& 2 HMPK sisters being shipped to me on Monday. They are 12wk old runts from the spawn of a giant HMPK father & a HMPK mom :) Not sure if they will join my existing sorority as they may still grow to closer to the giant Betta size....

I am considering putting my SuperDelta boy back in my 2gal as he doesn't swim much at all, seems to just be spending his time 1 the back corner. Then that bigger tank can become a 2nd sorority. Or if the new girls are gonna be ok in the sorority (I introduce new fish by removing everyone, rinsing all the plants & decorations, rearranging, then letting the new & more submissive fish in first and letting them get comfortable b4 the 2 that are "alpha", making sure my "bully" is last and she floats in her cup inside the tank until all the other girls have swam up to the cup and then swam away.) Then I will have an empty tank & that just won't do!

I have to make a trip to the store anyways b/c my quarentine bowl got given permanently to the spixi snails who now have an adorable little set up with some mini plants 1 floating & a no swimming allowed sign. :)

oh and to add to the insanity my blue mystery who mated with my purple stripe mystery snail laid 2 egg clutches over the past 3 days!

  8. 2 more added to my sorority :{ gosh darn it I'm so hooked.... I went to Pisces with a friend she needed to pick up water conditioner & course the big bottles are right by the bettas... I thought I'd just look and see if I could tell the girls from the boys and they had to have 2 purple girls.....

on the bonus adding 2 more to the group has made Peakaboo more comfortable and she doesn't hide as much & I've caught her joining in the chases. I've also moved their tank decorations a bit took away 1 cave they all avoided & added a bonsai tree decoration they like swimming thru it.

I bought a tetra whisper internal filter 20i for this 10gal tank yesterday when I bought a 5.5gal for Pretty Boy.

  9. I actually don't breed my betta's I just enjoy them for myself and my family!

Thanks for the links, I gathered a few tidbits I didn't already know. I will add some more plants to this tank. It really only had 1 tall silk to hide the filter, & some "twigs" off a stump. (didn't need much b/c it's home to spixi apple snails)! But they've got some hidey spots so they aren't totally exposed. Gonna keep my fingers crossed b/c it looks like I've got 1 female & 2 males. will get pictures if I can!

  10. I was at Big Als this morning and walked past the tank with these in it on my way to the betta girl tank. when I found out they didn't have any new ones in I stopped and looked at these guys. I've heard they are interesting cutie-pies. Of course an employee just had to come over carrying a bag & a net. I said I'm just looking and she smiled and said "well just in case". There were only 3 left, and you know I'd just moved my SuperDelta boy into his very own 5.5gal tank, so the spixi snail tank had no fishies in it.... and these 3 looked so sad & small in such a big tank.

So when I got them home, the lighter colored seemed to struggle with swimming. So I put it in a cup inside the tank but it seemed to be bothering the others. So into the fishbowl for a couple hrs. when I came back to check expecting it to be dead, I got a good surprise, it was swimming around. So I've now put it back in the cube tank, & all 3 are hiding. 1 behind the filter, 1 under the filter & the other is against the side of a rock well decoration.

I know they can be difficult to feed. Anyone have any suggestions for me? I fed dried bloodworms tonight, & there's an algae wafer in the tank from me feeding my spixi's this morning.

2 gal cube, filter is a Tetra internal power filther for 1-3gal tanks. it's heated with a betta bowl under gravel heater type pad. it's kept about 23-25C

  11. I bought 1 from BigAl's in Calgary on Monday I told the guy I have 3 tanks & what sizes, and he recommended me just buying 1 (it was the size of my fist!) & breaking it up into 3 pieces. He said just to rinse it once a week & "reball" it.

  12. I am seriously pathetic I've been checking my email every 2 minutes all afternoon waiting for these pictures to come thru. In the end once the black runt I was interested in, was in the holding tank they realized it was a male. But they had 2 sized more like the PK mom not the giant HMPK, that were stuck together like glue & the 1 was the identical color of the 1 I'd picked out. I agreed and they are now in a grow out tank with a label saying they're mine!!!! Now I just need to wait for 1-2more weeks for them to grow out some more & for my payment to clear..... Oh well I'll have to come up with names, I think I'm upgrading my sorority tank this weekend to a 15- 20gal on a stand (then that 10gal can go to Pretty Boy)...

this is the girl that was stuck like glue to the 1 I really like the coloring of: he said she didn't unstress stripe in a couple hrs. I figure I'm a sucker most of my girls have been b/c I felt sorry for how rough shape/stress they were....

    2864949020055689198HDTIvz_th.jpg

& this Cambodian colored HMPK is the 1 that caught my eye

  13. well it looks like I've just bought 2 sister halfmoon plankats. 1 is a very light cambodian & the other is black! they will be old enough & big enough to ship next Monday! I am very excited! The seller has promised me pictures of my 2 later today, they are going to move them into their own holding tank! Never thought I'd go plankat's but I saw the cambodian's coloring and thought yep... Then in a video they sent me of the grow out tank I saw this little black shimmering betta & said I want it too. it's a runt about a cm smaller than the cambodian sister but that's ok I can baby her along!

  14. Thankfully I have a very understanding hubby & lots of room.

1st betta: Fin, male veiltail royal blue w/redwash~wanted another after 10 years without a betta, from Pisces

    2835945180055689198KOYnjR_th.jpg

2nd betta: Little Girl, female veiltail, color id?~ 'rescued' from Pisces b/c she was so tiny & stressed out

    2231074240055689198YXprPi_th.jpg

3rd betta; Minnow, female veiltail, is she a royal blue w/redwash?~'rescued' from Pisces b/c she looks way too skinny she's "long & narrow".

    2145566470055689198RBEzzO_th.jpg

4th betta: Peakaboo, female veiltail deap purple~bought from Big Als b/c of her dark color & thought I've got 2 females already I might as well start a sorority & she was hiding in the back of their sorority tank all alone. Her name is b/c she's rarely seen, she doesn't come out from her "stump" (I've seen her chase 1 of the other girls away not meanly, just enough to say this is my hidey-hole) But when she is out she swims around the other girls just fine.

    2029968910055689198jYbJJI_th.jpg

5th betta: Pretty Boy, male SuperDelta bought from Big Als, just arrived Monday from Singapore.

    2888539630055689198BqvwRH_th.jpg

Now on a mission for 2 more; anyone know where I can get these from???

a red (hopefully with white edged fins) SuperDelta female

a black & white crowntail female

Once Pretty Boy is less stressed he will move from the cube into his own tank with an ivory bridgesi mystery apple snail (coming from sprucegrove this summer!)

    Then my unique colored spixi's will go into the cube tank;
