  1. So thanks to some very very generous donations from member laurensdad my tank is looking pretty full now for plants with some good color diversity also. Heres a quick update of how it's looking. Please excuse the poor quality pictures (phone camera). Plus if anybody has any suggestions at all for my tank let me have em, I'm all ears.

P.s. please excuse all the scrap clippings floating around, my platy is ready to pop some more fry so I keep them in there temporarily for hiding spot for fry until I can hopefully get them out before the angelfish has his way with them

  3. Hey y'all I recently upgraded the lights over my 29 gallon planted tank and now my plants are starting to really fill in. I'm really starting to love how it is looking more and more lush.

Anyhow as it gets more green and thicker I realized I wouldn't mind having a little bit more color in there. I've noticed a lot of planted tanks have some pink/reddish plants and I would love to get some for my tank but I don't even know what they are called or where to get any. Also do you think my 2.24 wpg lighting would be enough to sustain a red plant (I heard somewhere they mostly require high light)

    Thanks for y'alls input!

  4. I've always wanted to try to do say a wall of bamboo as a background. I don't know enough about bamboo though to care and trim them keep them in check. But I have heard they are to be kept rooted under water and leaves above water.

  5. Hey y'all,

So after struggling getting my Platys to give birth successfully in my community tank I have finally succeeded a couple weeks ago. By the time I got home from I noticed 5 fry swimming in the bottom of the breeding trap... My angelfish staring right at them (I'm sure he made a meal out of whichever found their way out)

Anyways... So i moved them into a little two and a half gallon tank thAt I pulled water from my established tank for and placed filter media in it. They have been in there for roughly 3 weeks and have grown a considerable amount but are still small. I am wondering how big I should let them get before placing them in the community tank.?

P.s. I have a fair bit of floating plants...

  6. Welcome!

Definately Canister Filters, i started with a 40 gallon and two underwater filters, they were nice but i found they were more of a pain to maintain and clean. and didn't provide as much water movement as i wanted. i then switched to a large HOB filter, liked it at first until the media starts getting older and flow gets bed and i actually had algae growing on the trickle part because i had very high lighting high above the tank... kind of a nuisance because the cleanup crew cannot get there. I now have an eheim canister filter and love love love it. its quiet, powerful, and extremely easy to use and maintain. They are pricier but i would suggest canister.

Once again Welcome to AA! :D

  7. Well i havent been home yet but according to my roomate shes on the bottom of the tank dead :-( this is the second one to happen to im gonna try some aquascaping this weekend create some more hiding places and ill probably invest the few dollars for a breeding box. So now i need two more female orang/red mickey mouse platy. if anyone has extra thatd be great cause last time i was at big als they had no more and i really wamt to successfully have them birth as i would love to be able to give some fry to my three year old neice but it i cant get them to breed successfully i.might just scrap the platys completely from my tank if the moms keep dying :-(

  8. I woke up this morning and she was swimming at the bottom of the tank completely vertically. head down tail fin up. really wierd. still has white ring. last night a few other platies looked to be sniffing out her birthing and almost seemed to attack her anus (i know it sounds wierd) so im thinking she had some of the fry already but theres still more to come. cause she has lost a little size but.nowhere near what she should have lost
