Turns out he recovered on his own. He only moves when I'm not watching but is getting around the tank and up the rocks just fine.

Hey everyone. I added the first inhabitants to my newly cycled reef tank yesterday. Everyone is doing great except the halloween/candy stripe hermit crab. The other hermits (blue legs) are cruising around the tank, as are the shrimp and snails, but this one just sort of sits there. He's only moved about 3 inches in the past 14 hours or so. temp 78 ammonia 0 nitrites 0 nitrates 10 salinity 1.026 I drip acclimated them for 30 minutes or so.

It was pretty easy to find, epiphany. It's on 19th about a block up from 32nd, so yeah literally around the corner. I didn't look around much as I was there after he closed just to pick up my rock, I'm very pleased with it, got it all in the tank last night. He warned me I'd bought too much, and he was right haha. Looks like I'll have to start another tank

Darn I was just at Big Al's today and had no idea there was a place around the corner. I only recently moved back to town and am having trouble finding all the new stores and where all the old ones moved to. Thanks very much Ron.

Hi everyone. I'm in the process of setting up my first salt water reef tank. I was advised that purchasing live rock isn't necessary and that I could start with dry rock. Problem is, I went to two stores today and couldn't find any. Where in Calgary can I buy dry rock for a reef? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Hi everyone! I first joined this community when I was in highschool and was running 5 freshwater tanks in my bedroom and one in the basement. Of course, once I graduated there was much moving around and all the tanks were eventually shut down. I started up again last year for a brief time, only to have to give all my fish to a friend and move cities (again!) to where I am currently at. But of course you know how the tank bug is, I never could part with the largest of my six tanks and it's sitting there in the corner of the basement taunting me and asking to be resurrected again. I'm finally at least planning to stay in the same city for the long haul and won't have to worry about long distance moves for a hopefully long time. I'm thinking salt water this time! And am in the process of researching and making a list of equipment I need to add and that reminded me of the awesome resource of this forum, the info, and the classifieds. So hello again! I'm back. I still have the fish bug, it was only in remission.

It's an idea floating about in the air. I've been told that switching my 33 gal freshwater to a marine tank should be fairly simple. The advice that was given at the store was to switch the aqua clear to a canister filter (though I've no idea what size as I've never used them before) and replace the substrate with crushed coral, decorate accordingly, and I'm good to go. Is it really that simple? This is something my father and I are going in on together as he takes care of the tanks while I am away at school during the winter. We are wondering how easy and expensive it will be to make the switch (expenses not including fish purchases), and how different the daily maintainance of a saltwater tank is compared to a freshwater one. We are not completely new to fish keeping, as the fresh tanks have been running for four years. Besides setup and maintainance, are there any suggestions for stocking the tank? I've never personally seen a marine setup smaller than 50 gal, so I wonder what I could keep in a 33. Thanks

I am now in my second semester of university and I am suprised at myself. This past summer in preperation to move out of my parent's house and into school dormatory rooms I sold or gave away almost all my aquarium stock and equiptment. I kept only a 33 gal tank stocked with the odds and ends of fish that I had become personally attached to, and one betta in a 1 gal container. Sadly the betta died the day before I moved away to school. Rules prevent the keeping of pets in the dorm rooms, unless it is a fish in less than 5 gal of water. While the tank at home remains under the care of my dad I found that after two weeks in september of not having a living creature under my own care I returned home for the weekend to get my betta bowl and bought myself a new fish. I later aquired another container and stocked it with plants and snails which I find oddly entertaining. Then two weeks ago, while home for a visit I discovered that the tank I left behind (which has suffered man losses under my dad's care) was still home to a dwarf frog I was given from my neighbour's over stocked tank back in the summer. Since the tank was losing its occupants it was getting fed less and so not enough food was sinking to the bottom to be eaten by the frog. He was the skinniest thing I have ever seen, literally starving to death. So I've scooped him out and brought him to school with me which involved buying a bigger container (I got a 3.5 gal critter keeper) and live foods (roommates still don't know what I've got in that plastic container in the fridge) My intention had been to not have any pets in my dorm and I was certainly not going to invest any more time or money into fish or their aquatic counterparts. But, here I am again, though limited in what I can get away with watching a frog munch on worms while his new roommate the betta builds another bubble nest. What is it about fish that is so appealing, that once you start you can't let anyone keep you away from them?

I've seen a roll hanging from the ceiling at pisces in their plant area. I don't know if they sell it though if if thats for their use or if its even what I think it is. I also don't know how rigid it is. You might want to call them.

Would the shark harrass a BN pleco, or the other way around? Shark is only about two inches long at the moment, I know they get big, and can get mean. Tank is a 33 gal, want to know if a pleco would be ok in there with the shark. Thanks

Haha blonde moment! After asking my question the other day I went to my cupboard and found that I already had a bunch of EM tabs. Which is exactly what I needed Now my question is about the dosage. It says to give one dose, wait 24 hours, give the other dose, wait 24 hours, do a 25% water change Continue until I've done 4 doses. So, after the water change, do I wait 24 hours for the third dose, or do I give it right away? This is the aquariumpharmaceducals EM tablets by the way. Thanks

Where can I get this stuff? It can be any fish medication that has erythromycin as the active ingredient. Thanks

I used to have one or the other, and when they got big they got agressive, and started to attack my angels and latch on to their sides. I was told at the time I had the wrong kind in the tank. Now I don't remember which one I had, and which one is considered ok, or if either was considered ok. I still have the angels, but I wouldn't mind a single small algae eating fish for my 20 gal. CAE or SAE? Or is there something better I could use? Thanks

Well I just found a $20 gift certificate my vet gave me for helping her out with some stuff, so it looks like I will get some more, and keep them in a seperate tank until they are a bit bigger this time. Oh well, now that I'm over being mad I'll be amused. I wonder if she's going to grow anymore herself now. She's already the biggest angel I've personally seen. On a random note. Anyone know how big they get exactly, from what I've read she and my male both passed the expected size already so it can't be right. Of course thats a really out of date book.

I've considered that, but the others are just kuhlis and the rainbow isn't a full inch yet. Its possible, I'm not ruling that out, but it still suprises me that I lost that many that fast. Most expensive feeders I've ever bought.

I just bought 10 tetras for my 33 gal yesterday, bringing my cardinal count up to a nice group of 14. I have 1 female angel in there with them This morning, I was back down to 4 cardinals, and 1 angel. Someone want to explain to me how a single angel fish can consume 10 tetras in one night and still want to eat the next morning. I looked everywhere for bodies, behind the tank, in the filter, under the wood and rocks, nothing. She is the only fish in that tank big enough to eat them, and I expected to lose one or two but 10? I am truely baffled, I didn't think her stomach was that big.

Hey, I just got home from pisces, she decided on a small anubias and another small potted plant I don't recall the name of, but the tag said low light and the temperature range was right so she's trying that out. I planted it all for her and its looking pretty good. Thanks for the help, and yeah, the anubias were on sale. They were kind of picked over, but we found a nice looking young one. She's all set in the plant department now. Thanks

Ok, that is what I was leaning towards, I just wasnt sure about the light requirements. Now, if she was to go with a java fern would it be better to get a small bit of driftwood or would tying it to a rock be alright? I've only ever grown it on wood before. Oh and I forgot to mention its unheated. But that wouldn't be a problem for java fern would it?

Hey, my neighbour just bought herself a little 2 gal hex tank and a betta. She had some wisteria in it, but thats not growing too well. She's not able to maintain a large tank, and she wants this little one to be as little trouble as possible due to health issues. She would like a small plant, that will grow well without much fuss, no fertilzer or water testing, and her light is a little 4 watt incandecent thing. Any suggestions? I promised to take her shopping this week , would like some advice before we go.

I thought 10-12 was a great looking number in my 33. Unfortunately I lost a number of mine and haven't been able to buy more. But I can tell you four isn't enough, they do school at that number, but its not as impressive. Actually I was going to go up to about 16. It limits what else you can fit in there, but I was gonig for an angel cardinal only tank at the time. An angel pair and a school of cardinals in a planted tank was really nice and I will be doing it again when I can afford to.
