  1. Having the water drain from the top and from the bottom both have there advantages and disadvantages.

From the bottom you will get more gunk ( I can't remember the name of the stuff for the life of me right now) and stuff off the bottom of the tank. But if you have little to no surface agitation you will get a scum build up on the top of your tank. You can fight this by adding a spray bar that breaks the waters surface tensions.

From the top you can end up with a larger build up gunk on the bottom of your tank but you will not need to have the spray bar on the top of your tank. You can use the spray bar across the bottom the kick up the gunk and it will get to the over flow box.

Remember that any lines the run in from the bottom of the tank to the sump will have to have a siphon brake or you will drain the tank.

Also if wanted to install the 1/3 drain for water changes, I would but a bulk head at the bottom of your sump that you can hook a hose up to and run the water to a toilet that way it will clean out the bottom of your sump as you do your water change. You can also fit the end of your hose so that you can hook it up and re fill your sump after you are done draining it.

  2. You do not need a pond liner to be able to keep gold fish. you can drain the pond and line it with cleaned crushed rock to keep the dirt from getting in the water. You will need some type of filter and pump. look for a pump that will cycle the pont around 5 time per hour and a filter rated for duble the ponds size. As for a net it is not required but it will not hurt any thing.

To be able to over winter the fish in the pond it needs to be deep, like 36" or something. A trough heater will help but that is a lot of water, you will also neet to curculate the water through out the winter to keep the O2 up in the pond.

Go to Natures Corner or PM them on here with what you want to do and they can set you up with the best equipment.

  3. I thonk it can be sort of done, but it needs to be on a large scale and 100% sealed. If it is not sealed it will be an opened system and will need you to add stuff. Mostly water. You would have to have a full food chain to have it be a closed system and the food chain will need to be able to support it self at all levels.

Any thing that can reproduce on a large and fast scale will be your best bet for every thing but you top predator.

  4. Stop adding ammonia if you still are is the first and most important thing. You Should da a water change to get he levles down a little, not so much the ammonia but the nitrate.

If you dont see the ammonia levle go down within a week then I would scrub every thing and try again.

  5. The algea eating dwarf plecos, Rams, some corrys and most tetras are a good choise for that type of enviroment. Natures Corner can go through there stock with you and help you pick out the best fish. Also some of the staff at Big Al's have experiance with that sort of thing, ( I think the people I am thinking still work there but they only worked weekdays before I left the city so don't quote me on it, lol).

THe best thing to know before you pick out the fish is the size of the tank. SOme of the larger fish are easy to care for but need to have very large tanks (ie Goldfish, and Oscars).

Just remember that if you want fish for algea control that the Comon Plecos are not that good at it. Go for the Bristlenose Plecos or a small school of Ottos.

Sorry for the rant, just wanted to through in my 2 cents.

  6. I would want to make sure that the tank is sealed befoe you put the glass in, If there is a small area that water can get in between the wood and the glass you are going to have a very large mess to clean up.

the polyurea is going to over lap the glass buy .5'' so unless water can get past polyurea and silicone it wont leak ;)

It might be me not sleeping for the last 36 or so hours, but I don't get it. is the coating going over the glass? Polyurea is a paint so when you fill the tank there is a good chance that the paint will crack.

Check out fishguys re build on monster fish keepers, he has some good info.
