  1. Can anyone tell me their thoughts on Aquarium Central? It is new since I have been in Alberta last.
  2. Thanks. I hope my plan works to ship home some fish before I leave works out. Ideally I would want to buy the fish and ship them the same day, so I hope the schedule works out.
  3. Hey guys, I am planning a trip to Alberta in a few weeks and will be in Edmonton for 4 days out of the 8. I once lived in Edmonton for 3 years but I am after forgetting all of the Local fish Stores and their addresses. I was wondering if you guys could help me out. Actually I am planning on doing some picking around the stores and shipping some selected fish back home to St.John's via Air Canada cargo. So I have one more question, where could I get a source of pure oxygen to fill the bags with? Thanks everyone.
  4. Thanks, that's a great video and nice looking tank by the way. I do like the ember tetras, they would add some red coloration that would look nice. Better alternate to Serpae Tetras that's for sure. I defiantly have a lot of narrowing down to do. Ultimately I would like to have a couple of school of small tetras and a shoal of larger type tetras, like Bleeding Heart tetras or Emperor tetras. One of the LFS does have the bleeding hearts but upon further inspection most seem that they have bent spines.
  5. Here's a couple of videos of the new Black Neons. http://s1110.photobucket.com/user/FishGuy22/media/video-2014-02-05-16-41-00_zpsa35312fb.mp4.html http://s1110.photobucket.com/user/FishGuy22/media/video-2014-02-05-16-46-03_zps2eb7b4fd.mp4.html
  6. It would be awesome to see a video of your Ember Tetras DJ. I spotted those at the LFS where I bought the Black Neons, they would add some nice color to the tank. I pondered on Pencil fish as well and Apistoss, though I would only get either the Rams or Apistos.
  7. I decided to go with a South American community tank for the 75G. I have been back and forth about it but I figured this option would give me the most stocking options. Also what help me decide was that Tetras are one of the few species I have not bred yet so I figured two birds one stone (of course I would have to remove a spawning group). I already started stocking the tank with 16 Black Neons but I am thinking I would like if there were one or two more shoals of tetras in there as well. Also I wouldn't mind adding a small group of Rams if that would work. It was suggested by fellow hobbyists in the area that a pair of Angels would look nice, I do like the idea but I am not sure of the aggression level. Anyway I am open to suggestion everyone. Thanks for the help. Here is a pic of the tank:
  8. The snails I am having a problem with are pond snails. From reading the info on PP I'd rather not go down that road as I don't want to recycle a tank I have had going for 5 years now. Perhaps I will try the food method combined with a search and destroy method. I should have given more detail when I mentioned taking down the tank and starting fresh. I just mean take the breeding trio of bucktooth out, marbles, java moss and spawning mops and then try the two mentioned methods. I need to add a plastic grate over the bottom as an egg barrier and add two sponge filters so I can really go at this Bucktooth tetra breeding project proper.
  9. Thanks for the tip. So I assume I would have to shock the filter media as well then, would this also kill the beneficial bacteria in the media?
  10. Oh I'm sorry I meant the adult Bucktooth tetras that I am trying to breed in the tank. What are the details with using Potassium Permanganate? I am not familiar with using it what so ever. Where can you buy it, how much do you add to a bucket that I could dip the plants in? Do I rinse everything it touches prior to placing that item back in with fish?
  11. Thanks for the tip. What I first thought was a minor snail issue is a totally crazy problem. The reality is I will most likely have to remove the adults once again and strip the tank down and try to manually kill all the snails I can find. I will try the cucumber idea when the time comes and hopefully I can rid the tank of all the snails. That's the one thing I hate about live plants, the risk of snails.
  12. I finally managed to track down a place that had koi swordtails and that would ship across Canada. The final order I placed was 3 male koi, 8 female koi, 1 male tri color and 5 female tri color. They also through in 5 tri color fry that are I would say around 6 or so weeks old. When they arrived they were ok shape but nothing good food and water won't fix and get them up to snuff. All adults are eating flakes, frozen brine shrimp and frozen bloodworms. I'm feeding the fry BBS and crushed flake. I was wanting these color strains for some time now as they are hard to come by here on the island. So my plan is to breed them and raise the fry so I can sell them to LFS and give them to fellow hobbyist so they will become more popular and available in the area. Here are a couple of videos of the new additions. I am after adding a couple of clumps of java moss to the fry tank for some cover for the fry.
  13. I am not sure if they are wild caught or not, but if I were to bet I would say they were domestic. But I will ask the LFS I bought them from just to be sure. Right now the temp is around 83F and they are getting a water change tomorrow. So I could try adding cooler water now that the tank temp has been up for the last few days.
  14. Here is a video of the stubborn little guys.
  15. I have recently encountered a problem with pest snails in most of my aquariums. I don't mind them in fry tanks as they seem to provide a low waste cleaning crew. BUT I am concerned that the pest snails in my egg scatter breeding tanks may be posing a problem for the eggs sitting on the plants and bottom of the tank. So will snails in fact eat the eggs and if so I need to get rid of them. I was thinking introducing some assassin snails would do the trick and once the pest snails are gone I would just remove the assassin snails. Is this a good idea? Thanks for the help.
