  1. I'm a little confused - my angels just paired off (2 koi) but they're letting a third one into their corner while the two pearlscale are being chased away. This is the first time they're laying eggs. I'm assuming I have two males looking after their lady? Anyone else have a breeding trio? Thinking of setting up a breeding tank to move them into but I'm not sure who to move?

  2. This started as a white area on his body, somewhat circular, now it's an open area and the other fish appear to be picking at it. He appears healthy otherwise, acting normally. NO2 and NO3 levels are good. Trying to add a picture but not sure how. I don't have a hospital tank set up at the moment. Any idea what I can do or how I can identify what's going on? Thanks

  3. Well, it's supposed to go into a hospital lounge - I think it would help people who are waiting to pass the time and if we have any long term residents or dementia patients it would give them something to look at. That's why I was hoping to find a bigger set-up but may opt for something smaller....and as we all know our great health care system these days, not sure there will be much if anything in the budget for such a thing. It'll probably all come out of my own pocket (which is also very limited!) but as most of us I'm excited to have found another place to keep a fish tank

    :-)

  4. hi everyone, I'm thinking of setting up an aquarium at work in a waiting area. Probably nothing too big (20-55gal) as I have to do the water changes by buckets (no water source close by). Any suggestions on what fish to put in there? I'll only sparesly populate it to keep the uptake to a minimum and no real plants (at least not yet). Preferably hardy fish. I was thinking maybe a couple of angelfish, a BN pleco, some other bottom dwellers. Any suggestions?

Then I'll also have to try and look for some donations or cheap deals on tank/stand/filter/heater/fish (got decorations). If anyone know of any, I'd appreciate the help. Thanks

  5. Just wondering if anyone has clown loaches and african cichlids (an electric blue hab and possible another hab) together in one tank? It's a 55gal tank, the loaches are about 2" or so and hiding most of the time....want to add a bit of color and have was thinking of putting those two in there as they get picked on in my other tank. Otherwise, what's a good combination with clown loaches for that size tank? Thanks

  6. Thanks. Those synos are hard to keep in one spot long enough to take a picture, though! The fish with the red stripe is a Haplochromic sp. "flameback" or at least that's what I think it is. I bought it as a flameback. I like it because it can be hard to find a lot of red in the rift lakes outside of the red empress.

Any idea where one could find such flameback for sale?

  7. When I added the last fish, I specifically waited till I had 2, not just one. Then I rearranged the decor and added them. I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of aggression (none whatsoever) even though I still have my socolofi in there. Maybe because the fish I added were the same size or larger and quite different from the others. Now I'm waiting for Gina to get back from Calgary so I can maybe get some more from her!

  8. It can be done, and would probably look awesome...

Are you talking about the all male tank or the almost all male tank?

I'm going to try to add male/female mbuna and leave the habs all male except if they get too aggressive...then I might add some women for them to distract them. So far, the habs/mbuna pretty much keep to themselves. I'm expecting to do some juggling at some point, but maybe I'll be lucky.

  9. Those of you with some experience with this, what have you had in your tanks and how did it work out? I realize it depends on the temperament of each fish as well, but if you had a 90g with a couple C. borleyi, P. Socolofi, an electric blue S. fryeri and a Red Empress (and 2 BN Plecos), possibly some Saulosi, what, if anything else would you add? And WHY?

  10. I'm not quite evolving that fast with the tanks (I would if I could!). I started off about 3 or 4 years ago with a 33g and some Kenyi and electric blue Johannii. Of course, too small a tank, so they killed each other off except for the dominant male Kenyi and one sorry looking Johannii. Then my heater malfunctioned, boiled the fish and my beautiful Kenyi died while the Johannii survived.

Then I bought some electric yellows to add to the tank. Learned more about cichlids and found out that most of my electric yellows were probably hybrids.

Got a 90g, got rid of the Johannii, bought some P. socolofi, some P. acei, some C. borleyi and some BN plecos plus the above electric yellows. Later added a couple of Sunburst peacocks but only one survived. Got a C. afra, but him and the socolofi didn't work out. Wanted to start breeding some fish, so got rid of most of the above except the socolofi, borleyi and the plecos.

Set up my 33g again and bought some Saulosi for it. Now I've realized that there are waaaayyyyy toooooo many species of cichlids out there that I want and if I want to start breeding I'll need a fish room, so I'm working on setting up a mainly (maybe all) male show tank. Don't want to get hybrids so will have to be careful. Hope the fish don't all kill each other. Maybe this way I can satisfy my desire to experience the different breeds without going crazy with lots and lots of tanks. We'll see

  11. okay, here's a question (somewhat topic related).......if you get a breeding trap (or whatever it's called) and put the holding female in there so that she stays in the main tank but is separate from the other fish, maybe with something for her to hide in, would that still cause aggression when she's released back in with the others?

  12. HI all you cichlids experts...

I have 3 Yellow Labs holding fry...This is my first time with cichlids so I am wondering how to strip the babies from them? And when to do it?

2 of them have been holding for about a week and a half and the other one for about 5-6 days. I would like to raise the fry this time as the last batch got eaten I believe. One is getting rather thin and I am worried about her. Thanks for your time.

    What, no replies yet????

Okay, I don't have any real experience with this, but this is what I've heard (maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong)........

Unless you have an egg tumbler, you may want to wait at least till they're holding for 2-3 weeks (probably closer to three weeks). You don't have to strip them, but you may want to move the holding females into a separate tank (best done when they're sleeping to keep the stress to a minimum). You can wait till they spit on their own. On the actual stripping part, you'll have to get someone else to help.

Anyways, that's my two cents worth. Hope it helps a little. Try searching the breeding section of the forum. Maybe this question has been answered there before.
