  1. Hi, thanks for your imput. When I tested the water last week all the levels were perfect. But I checked them again just now so I could report acurately and the Nitrites were a little high. So I added extra Prime to deal with that. Funny the nitrites would be so high because I just did a 40% water change only yesterday..

An established tank should have 0 nitrites registering on a test kit, which would lead me to believe that you have some water quality issues causing your fish to be stressed, which has lead to it showing less than ideal coloration.

Improve your water quality & you will most likely see an improvement in your fish.

Orrrr just to take another shot in the dark was the decor in the tank she came from different than yours?

  2. Personally I have never had an oscar that will nip at other fish. I understand that there are a ton that do so however so that will be your first issue. The dithers won't help. Either a fish attacks rays, or doesnt. Many will leave bottom dwellers alone, while others won't. I had rays will peacock bass which I would say are very similar to Oscars. As far as being tank mates in that tank? I think you will be fine. The tank is going to be large enough. You would be better off to grow the oscars out with larger rays, but if that is not an option than just go for it and watch it closely.

Your bigger problem will be bioload. I would put that tank on a serious drip system as weekly water changes wont cut it. Both species are highly aggressive messy eaters and so you are going to have to watch to make sure that your water parameters stay in check. The oscars will handle it, but the rays won't.

    Good luck

  3. NLS versus massivore

Shots are from 1 to 5 minutes. Each minute I pressed on the top of each pellet. Notice in the first picture the NLS floats....weird must have some air in there. You will notice the dirty water by the nls in the picture prior to it breaking up. All the massivore does is breaks into pieces. Again logic beats science. Wow..can you imagine what happens in a tank where fish are eating and the water is actually moving?

  4. If anything NLS holds together several times longer in the water than most other brands. I've seen pellets floating in tanks for several hours, and they are still in one solid piece.

The reason for that is the small inclusion rate of carbs/starches/grains, which is also why NLS doesn't swell up like a balloon when it sits in the water. The wafers will last a full 24 hrs without breaking apart, try finding that in any other wafer on the market. Good luck! As previously stated, I have fed full grown oscars, red devils, midas, and even arowanas, and have never experienced what Red0 mentioned. Yes, some species such as oscars are messy fish, no question about that, but I haven't seen any of them blowing large chunks out of their gills.

Ok RD... I am not normally a prove your wrong by taking a bunch of pictures...but what else to do hungover on a sunday morning. Time elapsed on this particular

  5. Being that my food bill is a small fortune a month I thought I would chime in on a few things.

RedO-your comment about the NLS coming out of the gills. I don't think this has anything to do with the size of pellets personally. I find NLS breaks up easily when it hits the water and therefore it is probably just a normal Oscar thing to do-make a mess. If you can feed them Massivore as I find it does not break up as easy. Problem with massivore is the size. Carnivore is smaller however unfortunately has the same problem as NLS. If you need some bulk I can help. I get it for $50 Us for 2.2 pounds.

Hybrid didn't you just get a ray? If you are worried about cost to feed I would try to get over it. Rays are stupidly expensive to feed.

I am a big fan of diversity in food. Nothing is better, so try everything.

Not sure about the whole trout chow thing though. Who else uses this? From what I understand it is used for high growth and no substance. Who else uses this?

  7. I have now replaced every single Union B ball valve in my entire system. These are the grey ones. They always seem to start leaking heavily from the seal.

I am going back to the $7.99 Rona ball valves. I was wondering if I am the only one?

  8. Ryan was there any burn on the disc from the ammonia? I am not sure how long he has been exposed to the ammonia but just from experience watch that the stomach of the ray has not shrunken due to the ammonia spike. Some times this will occur and the ray will attempt to eat but can't.

  9. Well after years of waiting my big female henlei (in my avatar) is finally knocked up. The father could be the male henlei I had with here for years with no successful spaw, but it more likely a newly mature P14 male. (which will be cool as nobody has successfully crossed the two)

With Henlei being one of the hardest rays to spawn I am incredibly excited. I have never successfully bred rays it will be a good first time occurance!

  10. I am completely confused by this post and your setup looks like you should have disaster recovery on stand by but.. with no overflow here is how you solve your problem in case of a power outage.

Figure out where your tank will drain to before it overflows your tupperware tub. Then drill a hole in each of the pvc tubes going from the sump to the tank right at the top just below the water surface. Therefore in case your pumps stops operating the syphon will break when the water level drops below the drilled hole. Even if you have an overflow this is good practice as if your intakes are low in the tank it will keep syphoning.

  11. I have several monoculus and ocellaris right now (tems get much to large for me lol), they are very friendly and I must say at a young age if you hand feed them then you should be able to get them to eat many different things, mine eat food sticks, feeders, bloodworms... they are personable to, kind like oscars... what lfs was this and what did they look like and what size... did they have a singe horizontal line through their body or 3 vertical stripes/ spots...

They were at Big Al's when I was there two weeks ago. I can't remember the details as to there lines and stripes sorry. But they were labelled as Ocellaris.

At Big Als Edmonton? They had Temensis the other day. Cool as hell looking Tems.

  12. I kept a few over the years.

They are not aggressive at all to other fish but will eat them if they can. Having said that I find them the worst creatures of habit you can own. If they are trained on dead chances are they won't eat anything live. If they are trained on one food, they will only eat that one food.

Get big and fast. They are incredibly cool to watch, have incredibly cool colors and feeding time? Bring a towel....
