  1. Thanks for the great pics. Those are some very big fish. Is it catch and release only or do you enjoy them for lunch?

We keep a juvenile Redfin for lunch everyday, approx 4-6lbs. Redfins are the most abundant morph of lake trout in the lake and inhabit a lot of different habitats. From the shallow surge zone, to deep water troughs and drop offs to open water. I've seen them crashing on balls of ciscoes at the surface and even sipping caddis flies off the surface. They seem to be more of an opportunistic generalist feeder.

The Greys are the largest and feed on whatever will fit in their mouth. They also have large heads, massive mouths and enlarged teeth. This combined with a long, sleek body and large tail make them the ultimate predator in Great Bear Lake.

  2. Thanks!

Bugs are bad for the first couple weeks, mostly just a nuisance at shore lunch and on shore. I just try to pick a windy shore lunch spot and use bug spray when needed. As for bugs while fishing, not really an issue. It's a giant lake.

Age of the lakers, it's less than you'd think. The Redfins and even more accurately, the Butterfly Redfins live the longest, up to 70 years. The big piscivorous "Greys" are 30-50 yrs old. We have 7-11 different morphs of Lake Trout in Great Bear Lake. (depends on which biologist you talk to) All classified as the same species but each has evolved to occupy a specific niche in the food chain.

  3. Ya, my only concern is if people are using adhesives that aren't aquarium safe it could potentially affect aquarium health. I'll probably just leave it white. I remember you could buy reflectors from Fluval for their T5 HO lights for pretty cheap. Seen them at Petsmart etc.

This guy is selling LED strips in Canada and he has a whole bunch of options available. I'm waiting for him to get back (says he's gone til the 16th) and then I'll be ordering to do the build.

  4. During the summer months I work above the Arctic Circle on Great Bear Lake, NWT and Tree River, Nunavut as a fishing guide. Here's a few pics from this past summer.

  5. I was doing so good for so long (traveling) but I've since fallen off the wagon and the itch was too bad to bare. =P

Before the summer I had a killer Tanganyikan Community setup but I left it in the care of my family and they killed everything.
I had a young group of Enantiopus sp. "Kilesa" F2, Paracyprichromis nigripinnis F1, and Cyprichromis leptosoma "Mamalesa" F2...was a heavy hit on the wallet. =/

  6. Thanks RD.

Ya the Lion's Cove variety does have a varying amount of white to them. I'm not bashing any of the wild strains as they all have awesome colour and differing features. I'm talking more about the Yellow Labs you find at the less reputable or big box fish stores. The washed out, farmed labs and the clearly hybrid labs with no black to them at all.

Even the White Lab from Nkhata Bay can have some yellow on them, even from wild fish.

  7. Picked up 16 of these from Spencer Jack in Winnipeg. I trekked them across the prairies to Golden, BC and I'm currently raising them up. Looks like the group is male heavy with at least half of them being males. I separated the largest males from the group to a separate tank to allow the subdominants and females to catch up in growth.

Currently I'm doing daily 30% water changes and power feeding them to boost growth on the tank with the smaller ones. I'm feeding small amounts about 4 times a day.

These guys are stunning with solid yellow/orange throughout the entire body. No white at all on these guys, even as juveniles. What sparked me to work with these is my utter disappointment with modern Electric Yellows. The ones you see now a days for the most part are washed out and don't do the species justice. So I'm hoping to pump out some top quality, non-hybrid, true Yellow Labs back into the hobby.

They're getting close to breeding age and I'm excited to start getting these going. Of the males I've separated, I've chosen the two best to be my breeding males. These having the most black in the fins.

Here's a couple pics from about a week ago before the trek to BC. They've since grown but I haven't got a chance to snap any updated pics yet.
