  1. Once you take out the meat and just the coconut shell is left I don't see why it would hurt your fish. It should be similar to any driftwood you put in the tank, and it's so small it shouldn't have much effect on the ph. I boiled the coconut shell for awhile just to be sure anything living in it was dead. I also took off most of the "hair" on the outside, but left some for texture so the plants could grab hold. If you do try this out, they look much better in planted tanks when they are overgrown and covered in Java Moss. With no plants on them they look out of place. I don't like coconuts either, so the milk and meat went to waste in my case
  2. Degrassi already mentionned Terra Cota pots. They work great if you don't want to spend much or put in too much effort. I set mine up a little differently than Degrassi. I just try and break off the bottom (without breaking the entire pot <--that's the hardest part) and the fish have something they can swim into, through and relax in. I've also made a coconut cave for one of my other tanks. It looks very nice overgrown with Java Moss.
  3. ABwildrose, Yes that's a Red Tiger Lotus, however it's not doing so well. It tends to stay about 1-2" high and has very small leaves. I'm too lazy to get into fertilizers, etc... and nurse it back to health. I can teach you a few things about that
  4. Thanks. I realized looking at these pictures that I don't like the overgrown look, like it is right now. It's also too much of the same colour (green) right now and needs some more reds again. Degrassi, If you've got your camera fixed now you should start taking pictures of you planted tank so that you can do the same in a year or so. It's nice to be able to look back and see how the tank looked a year or even a few months ago.
  5. 2004 January: 2004 August: You probably noticed some plants are in just one or two of the photos. These are the ones that didn't take too well to my no-fertilizer diet The only "high maintenance" plant I would like to have do well is the red tiger lotus, which is still there, just not growing any higher than about 2" any more. I should add that the Anubias and Java Fern were removed by myself not becuase they were difficult to grow, far from it. The Anubias leaves would stay for soo long that green spot algea would grow on it, and the Java Fern became a HUGE mess of roots behind the driftwood on the right. So out they went! Anyway, hope you enjoyed the pictures.
  6. I thought this series of photos was interesting, showing the changes in my planted tank over a period of almost 2 years since I started it. It is a 20 gallon long with 55 watts of light, DIY CO2 and flourite substrate. I did for a short time add some fertilizer, but quickly began to forget, and the plants (with some exceptions) do very well even without. Anyway here are the pictures: 2002 October: 2002 November: 2003 March: 2003 April: 2003 October:
  7. Nice fish. I don't think I've seen pictures of that larger puffer (without the spots) you have, what kind is it?
  8. Nice tanks you have there. Good aquascaping on the Multi tanks. 185 gallon Wish I had a tank like that!
  9. Thanks, it was a great time! I just wish it hadn't been so hot...
  10. Here are some of the planes on display on the tarmac: Hope you enjoyed the pictures! Did anyone else get the chance to go up north for the show? It was well worth it, but scorching hot
  11. I went up to the Airforce base in Cold Lake and took lots of pictures at the Airshow on Saturday. These and the ones in the next thread are some of the better ones. Snowbirds: Thunderbirds: Parachutes:
  12. The G3 is a digital 4 megapixed camera. Canon now has a G5 out which is better yet and another camera called the Canon PowerShot Pro1. I wish I could afford to keep buying better cameras as they came out
  13. Thanks everyone. Smokey: I was using a Canon G3 for these photos. This batch was taken without the flash, so I had added some extra light (total 111 watts over 33 gallon) above the tank so the shutter speed wasn't too slow.
  14. I took this photo of my female convict about a week ago. I wasn't panning the camera on purpose, but the fish started moving so I was trying to keep her in the frame. I really like the way it turned out. Here's another photo I took at the same time:
  15. Very nice picture with the reflections on the glass and door panel as well as the "photoshop" effect. Do you mind if I ask how you did that cool effect? Was it one of the default filters?
  16. I took these photos just a few days ago and am much happier with them than the last batch. Hope you like them as well. What I need is more fish, so I'm not always taking pictures of the same ones :P
  17. Nice photos and fish Pufferpack. Thanks for sharing

    Hi there

Hi Toirtis and J-Roc. Nice to see you on this board as well Toirtis! J-ROC, I take it your a fan of Trailer Park Boys. I watched yesterdays episode and my favorite part was when Bubbles smears Mr Lahe's glasses with the greasy piece of KFC
  19. Thanks. I do have some full tank pics, although they are from January and the tanks all look much different now. 33 gallon (convicts): 20 gallon long: 10 gallon shelldweller tank: I've got bacopa planted all across the back now. Degrassi: It is tough to get focused on these small guys. Mine are larger, averaging about 3/4" When they are smaller you may have better luck focusing on a shell or something the fry are right next to. For some reason the best pics I've taken of the fry tend to be when they are in mid-water and they don't stay still for long then.

    Hi there

Hi everyone. Degressi let me know about this board awhile ago, but I forgot about it till know. This seems like a very good idea, having a board for us Albertans I don't have any big fish like some of you, but I've got three different types of cichlids: Convicts, Ocellatus and Apisto Pandurinis as well as some other FW fish. I'll post a few pics I took today in the photo forum.
