  2. sorry for my absence. it has cleared up to the point its not there anymore, hes hiding in his bogwood at the moment. I dont really have a qt tank going right now, just my lab fry tank. I do gravel vac every wc weekly. I havent yet treated thenk tank but im observing it closely. and will do a wc tonight.
  3. I have a 3 inch male bristlenose, I noticed tonight that on his gills and surrounding area he has white on him. It looks like overspray if someone was to spray paint....not thick kinda sparse but still there. the water water quality is good. I change weekly 25% has anyone seen this? only fish in tank are 6 inch syno eupterus 3- 4 inch clowns at the moment. he has bogwood and gets hikari wafers in a well established tank. If youve seen the same symptons or have any suggestions please help. He's very photogenic. lol

    tank sizes

    I just sold a 45 gal. 36" long x 12" wide and it was 24" tall
  5. I did pick up some more gravel today and almost bought a rena xp3 to replace my fluval 303 :boxed: but the bank gave me a dirty look before I finished my interest in a new filter.
  6. I am just going to start setting up another tank. It will be a growout tank for juvenile frontosa and malawi dolphins. I will also have 4-4 inch clown loaches and a bristlenose to go in this 50 gal. will have a fluval 404 and a A/C 50. I do have some hagen black gravel (the small pebbles), and I do have target playsand. My fronts are starting to dig alot so Im not sure about the sand only because I dont want the silt to destroy the filters. Is there any suggestions of the best substrate to use? Im not sure if i can keep live plants because they will probably be uprooted all the time and I do have bogwood and slate for it.
  7. I was given 250 watt jager heater. I noticed some moisture inside the tube. Just a bit of water in there. Looks like it may have been submerged. I noticed just a little bit of rust near the top of the element. Is this still cool to use, or should I not risk putting it a tank? Thanks
  8. It would mostly be a growout tank for now until I can get a bigger tank. Thinking of a long and low 130-150 or so. Basement needs developing first. Id start out with fry at first. At the moment I have 2 burundi one 3.5 inches and one 2 inches. Id like mpimbwe tho. I thought of malawi dolphins with them also I have a line on some fry, since mine passed on during my move. good sized to 4 inches. I has choked.
  9. just picked up tank #5 very nice, cant wait to get started, probably a frontosa tank
  10. DOH!!! oh well, its a good thing I paid only for the tank and really wanted the 8 inch syno eupterus. hes now got a big fat belly now
  11. Hmm.. I dunno if thats a good thing or a bad thing. maybe it might have been good if the females survived
  12. that tank looks familiar, did you buy that from my buddy Paul, I showed up Too late. Boo. Looks good tho
  13. I have a cichlid that i dont know what it is. Surprisingly everytime I turn the light on the aquarium he shoots right out and shows himself off, but as soon as theres a camera in my hand he gets shy. I assume hes a male because when I rescued the tank there where 2 others, less brilliant in colors and a bit smaller. and the person left to take care of them said there was occasionally fry swimming around. The 2 ended up dying in shock from clean water. But he survived. heres some hurtin pictures and if anyone can make heads or tails of it and be able to make a match I would be greatly appreciated. thanks
  14. cool, thanks... I do have an AC50 on the 45 gallon also just to get movement on top. but I will definately try those combinations. I see they have a water polisher to :boxed: but im wondering if this is more show for the dough.
  15. I just set up a a fluval 303. I put carbon on the botton and biomax in the middle and foam on top. Ive never had a cannister filter before but as the hobby grows and my pockets get bigger it and generous parents...thanks joboy. Does anyone have any suggestions of the optimal media combination?
  16. 5.5g + 27g + 29g + 45g = 106.5g and growing :smokey:
  17. Well, Ive finally finished the move to turner valley. Well still alot of unpacking. Tanks up and running. This morning I noticed my lone bolivian rams' eye starting to look swollen and starting to turn red around the eye. Ive heard of popeye before but never seen it. Does this sound like the early symptoms to anyone that may have seen it before. Should I isolate him from the other tankmates and is there a treatment for this. The water is very clean.... just setup the aquarium with 50% of water from tank before the move I transported to the new location and 50% aged water with prime and has been running for 5 days with seeded filters and ornaments. If anyone may have seen this problem could they recommend a treatment. Thank You
  18. I re-introduced the fish into their cleaner, more livable space last night. no more cheesy ornaments with all the paint and urethane coming off and chinsy painted blue and white gravel...no offense but I like natural substrate and ornaments like bogwood and mopani, they have more room and clean water, they seem to be doing good and the venestus my sister nursed back to health are doing great, thanx fishnut. they've just started eating again...must be a shock to their system after not being fed for most likely 5-10 days at a time.
  19. Im adding aged water with prime. I have been putting in Melafix also as well as daily 50% changes. They have been in there now for 4 days, featherfin seems to be getting color back, cichlid looks like hes doing ok. until he gets all his color back I wont be able to tell his species. pleco seems to be alright to. I just got the 45 gallon cleaned out and set up with seeded filter media and a few ornaments from my other tanks that have been running for 1.5 years so once the temperature is up and a little more time cycling they will go back to their much cleaner and maintained home.
  20. I just picked up a 45 gallon tank. It was very neglected for the better part of a year. last water change i heard from the owners cousin was november and that was only because she needed to move the tank because the owner no longer lived there to take care of these guys. when i broke the tank down it was filthy, almost copper color. Im amazed they were all alive. they were fed occasionally but probably wents many days without food. the filter was disgusting. I have the setup now and Im cleaning the tank so i can set it up. so far 2 cichlids have died since the move. theres one left Im not sure of the breed but they are white with black on the dorsal and pectoral fins. I think the one remaining is male and 2 females died. theres also a 7 inch sailfin pleco and an 8 inch syno eupterus, the syno is as white as a ghost.I currently have them in the buckets I used to do water changes on my other tanks until the 45 is setup. I have dosed the buckets with pima fix,but theres no filtration or anything. Theres plenty of air getting in there and I change 50% of the water every day and just to get them used to clean water, when i put them in the bucket I used 50 % old water. Does anyone have any suggestions or should I just keep keeping on with what im doing? I would put them in with my tanks but im afraid of disease in my tanks which are very well maintained.
  21. Well, these two are very busy, It seems like I'm stripping her every month with 12-20 fry. shes about 3 inches and he's 4 inches. I have a 5.5 gallon with one male betta in it and it has become my fry tank. My girlfriends betta has become a tenant in the fry tank. The first time I thought she was sick so I tried to put her in the 5.5 and treat it with pima fix and she spit out all the fry. Anyways shes as healthy as a horse, and the yellow labs are overrunning the 5.5 gal with no problem yet but Its time I look for a proper 20-30 gal fry tank for these two. can you tell I'm a rookie? lol. oh well Im addicted Cya
  22. Hi I am currently living in Calgary, but Im moving to Turner Valley. Does anyone know someone or live in Turner Valley/Black Diamond area that is a fish keeper, and knows more of water quality? I have taken a sample and my sister has run some tests. results as follows: GH-General Hardness is 340 KH Carbonate Hardness is 190 PH is 7.6 If anyone has some tips on getting my buddies acustom to this water would be great. I have blue dolphins, yellow labs, burundi fronts, psynodontis eupterus, bristlenose pleco and clown loaches in one tank and angelfish, bosemani rainbows, hatchetfish, red tailed botias and an albino bristlenose in the other and a yellow lab fry grow out tank. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
  23. well my loach is keepin on keepin on. he still looks very thin and weak, have seen him go at some blood worms when they have floated into his hiding spot under a rock. i didnt see if he ate it or not. I dont have a quarantine tank per say, but I do have a 5.5 gallon with some yellow lab fry, Male Crowntail and 1 albino bristlenose I could put him in (little less agressive and no other loaches to fight for food with) to see if hell eat
  24. Hello all, I have I have 4 clown loaches. Ive noticed recently that one of them look to be getting skinnier and skinnier and not eating with the rest. I havent noticed any aggresive behavior from the other three when food is around. His gills look to be rosy red and seems somewhat inactive except when the others are around and he'll try to swim with them. His color is very dull compared to the rest also. I'm wondering if he has a parasite or if anyone has had a loach with these type of symptoms. he does seem to look for food on the bottom. I have always been very picky on water quality and have always gravel vacced and done a 35% water change each week. and test it once a month. I just hope its not a parasite because they are in with african cichlids and a syno eupterus and one red tailed shark and a lone bristlenose. If anyone has any information it would be a great help.. thanks
  25. I'm looking at them right now and perhaps I dont wanna give them up :P
