  1. Just picked up two of em. they seem to fit in the community tank, lotsa hiding spots so we'll see how they do. They an cool fish tho. Its a planted tank and I hear they're diggers :S.
  2. Hi all, I was just curious about these botias I saw some that are all blue body and red fins I think they are called painted botias. When I asked the shop keeper he informed me they are too aggressive for a community tank, but when I read up on them it said they are timid and shy until they have their set territory then they will protect it. which seems fine for a community tank. They will be the only ones occupying the bottom of my tank except a corydoras. If anyone has more experience or some insight to this I would like to to gain more knowledge. I'd really like to have a few in my community tank. Thanks
  3. both loaches are about 2 inches and the red tail is also about 2 inches. I do believe it is a female red tail because it does have more grey on the belly.
  4. Hi all, I was curious if anyone has ever seen a red tailed black shark rubbing up against and pushing the clown loaches over? This guy will persistantly following my loaches and not straying far from the loaches ornament that they hide in. I dont see any aggression or nipping. Could this be a territorial thing? He never did it before to the loaches, I just started noticing it. Theyve been together for about 2 months now. If anyone has any insight to this behavior it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  5. Ive seen my loaches and synodontis eupterus flashing now for a week or so my tank temp is up to 30 celsius/86 fahrenheit for the past 3 days now and ive put 12 tbsp of salt in over the past 3 days now. Same sort of symptons as you fishnut. So we'll see what happens over the next few weeks. Good Luck. Does anyone know if the beginning of winter may cause any tank instabilities, cause lately I've noticed both my tanks have seen better times?
  6. Hi all, Well I woke up one morn and checked on him and he was very pale, almost white and noticed a part of his pectoral fin missing, being the olny fish in the tank I knew no one was nipping at him. Anyways to make a long story short he died later on in the day. Its too bad also because he was a big angel and kept everyone of his tank mates in line. But it seems my luck is dwindling I noticed my clowns in a different tank are showing signs of Ich which Im currently raising heat and salt treatments. I havent noticed any on my synodontis eupterus tho which is good. so hopefully the lifecycle will of the ich will deminish. Thanks to all that posted, Ive taken this problem as a learning experience.
  7. Has at anyone seen or have a freshwater flounder. I was just curious because I've been considering one or two for one of my aquariums, I cant seem to find too much Info about them as to if theyre better community or semi aggressive or so on? Thanks
  8. Hi All, I did read the links you sent guppy, it did have good info and I have used some of the procedures. As for using the hydro vac, I do use it everytime i do a water change. Now I hope that Its not a bad thing to use it everytime or to spread the use out. I will be getting a nitrate test also Willfishguy to check that out to. Something that I forgot to mention, About 2 weeks ago I changed the gravel I had in the tank. Its now geosystem substrate. I did this because Its a planted tank and the plants seem to like the smaller substrate and grow better, I also use flourish. As for now the angel is still surviving in the hospital tank the holes in the fins are still there and the ones in the body dont look as bad. Thanks to everyone for the excellent knowledge that has been provided and as I see in the links guppy sent, this isnt an overnight fix and patience must be excercised.
  9. I havent tried frozen foods but i do have omega one freeze dried bloodworms I give him sometimes and I have omega one tubiflex worms, but the barbs usually get that. I do test my water weekly and the results are always the same, less than 0.1 mg/L nititres and Ph 7.5, and ammonia is 0 mg/L, in the home tank. I have kept up treatment of melafix and just did a 50% water change in the hospital tank. I am changing the activated carbon in the home tank, just because its time. I've heard that clown loaches are to tank water as canaries were to gases in mines, they start acting different when change is happening. If its true I'm not sure but they are as active and normal as can be.
  10. I do 25% water changes weekly and feed with omega one tropical fish flakes and he occasionally gets a shrimp pellet that may not sink to the bottom for the corydoras. theres no plecos' in the main tank. I havent noticed any change in appetite either, hes always been a glutton. the tank has been set up for about 5 months now. I do have a pic That may or may not help someone that may have seen this problem before. Thanks again
  11. just some more info about the angel. He has been in my 30 gal hex for about 3 months and I have had a gourami in with him, but the angel has been very territorial and the gourami doesnt bother him too much. The water temp is between 79 and 80 degrees and the water quality has the nitrates at about 0.3 and the Ph is good. I have since put him in my 5.5 gal hospital tank with about 1/4 tsp of melafix and the carbon filter has been pulled. His tankmates in his home tank are 1 gourami, 4 black neon, 2 neon, 2 clown loaches and a corydoras. He is a mature angel and is about 3 1/2 inches long tip to tail. Thank you
  12. Hi, I have recently noticed that my angel has what looks like small cigarette burns in his fins, he also looks like there is a small hole in his side behind his gills. its not red or anything but it looks white. Nothing pertrudes or hangs off the wound. Has anyone ever seen this or anything info about medication. I do have a hospital tank and have considered melafix for him. Thank You
  13. Thank You for your help. I will definately remember this for future incidents that may show up
  14. Just checked on him in my 5.5 gallon he is laying on his side on the bottom. I put in aquarium salts and turned the heat up a bit
  15. Hi, I have a dwarf flame gourami that is about 2 inches long and lately I have noticed him sitting on the bottom of my aquarium and occasionly going up for air but then he just sinks to the bottom hitting the rocks i have. Ive noticed his stomach quite enlarged and not very symmetrical. His swimming is awkward to. Ive noticed to red spots by the fins on his sides like a scale missing. I'm assuming there may be a parasite or a fungus. Is there a treatment for this? He is also in my community tank :S should I worry about other tankmates?
  16. Im quite new to the planted tanks. I have added some large amazon swords, italian val, and some othe plants to my tanks to get started. the amazon swords leaves seem to always turn brown after a while, one is almost totally brown. I try to trim them as much as possible but it seems like Ill just have a bunch of stems in the not to far future. I dont have a CO2 cannister but i add flourish to my tanks. Is a Co2 cannister required to keep plants green and healthy or can I get by without one? once established Id like a vegetative tank and many hiding places. Oh, and I do have an epoxy coated gravel, Does a good fine substrate make any more difference?
  17. Is an aquaclear70 too much for a 27 gallon hex? The only thing I wonder about is the turbulant waters cause it causes quite a stir. I dont think you can overfilter water, but my community tank seems to be alot more active. not much schooling from my black tetras and the angel/gourami pair seem to be near the bottom. :S
  18. I finally got one, but it came from outsources. Thanks Joboy
  19. I'll check out golds and hopefully i can find one or two of the little guys. thank you
  20. Hello Everyone. Im a calgary member and i was curious if anyone knew or has seen a synodontis eupterus in their travels. I am Looking for one for one of my tanks. Thanks
  21. I have a black skirt tetra, and at the very top of his back fin (not to sure of the technical term) he has a white spot. The spot is almost like someone dipped the fin in bleach :S and it is white. It doesnt pretrude or anything it almost looks natural. Could this be Ich?
  22. I'm in currently in Calgary. The Fish i have now are a Dwarf flame gourami, peppered cory, 3 black neons, 2 neons in a 5.5 gallon while my 29 gallon sets up and 2 black skirts in the 29 gallon getting things started. I'd like to step things up a but I'm still a beginner
  23. Hi, Im fairly new to the forum here, I am also new somewhat new to the hobby. I have a 5.5 gallon tank and a 29 gallon tank. In the 5.5 I have 3 black neon tetras, 2 neon tetras, a cory and a Dwarf flame gourami. That tank has been in use for about 7 months. My new 29 is just being set up. I have had it running with an aquaclear filter for about 3 days now and changed some of the ornaments from the 5.5 to set up for bacteria growth. I also have taken 2 black skirt tetras from another tank to get the system set for other fish. I guess to make a long story short. I was wondering if there was any suggestions for some inhabitants for my 29 gallon. I do have some live plants also. Thank You, Adam
