  1. No wonder my emerald crab looked so very busy last night! Leave it to my new tank to come up with a form of algae I have not heard of yet. I have an emerald crab, feeder shrimp, a candycane shrimp, hermit crabs and snails in there. I am hoping that somebody likes the taste of that stuff. SALTWATER RULES! Even the algae looks awesome!
  2. Yes, sort of but really small. About the size of a plastic pin head on a pin. Dark green in colour and they seem to grow in clusters. I cannot wait until I get a digital camera as there seems to be LOTS of strange little growths on the rocks I just put in. The green jelly drop "thingys" are definitely the most prominent thing so far.
  3. IT'S ALIVE!!! Everything and everyone looks good except for the anemone, who is hiding squished up between a couple of rocks and only extending a few of his feeder tubes. I hear they are pretty tempermental so I shall just keep an eye on him. I did not run water tests tonight as everyone looks great. By the way - I seem to have this weird stuff growing out of the new live rock. It is like green jelly bubbles coming out of the pores. I am hopeful that is a good thing...? This salt thing has GOT to be the absolute coolest hobby EVER!!!
  4. Thanks, little sea. I have been sitting here at work squirming all day wondering what is going on in that salt tank. Hey - I note you are Elite Aquatics, Colby. Once I get this tank running right I shall head in to pick up some more livestock from you. You have a great selection of salty creatures! Have a good one! Karen
  5. Thanks, Erin. I am thinking along the same lines as I have lots of experience with fresh water. I will do a water test when I get home and see what is happening. I guess that is really the only way to tell!
  6. Good morning. Some of you already know that I bought a 26 gallon saltwater aquarium a couple of weeks ago that contained approximately 5 pounds of live rock. Since that time I have added another 5 pounds of rock that I got from an LFS that had been curing for months. Last night, I managed to score another 17 pounds on canreef, together with a bit more live sand, and was informed that the rock was from an established tank that has been up and running for years so I could add all of the live rock at once and if anything it would improve my water quality. Since that time I have received another opinion that my tank will probably go through a bit of a cycle because I added so much rock at once. Can somebody clear this up for me? Will the tank cycle or not? And if so should I start doing daily water changes when I get home tonight? I already have livestock and invertebraes in there so I really need to keep the water quality close to perfect. Thank you for any knowledgable responses, or even not-so-knowledgable ones .
  7. No, sorry. I am hoping for a digital camera for Christmas. He is very cute - just in a gross, icky kind of way! -roll-
  8. Well I got home last night and notice the anemone has moved to the complete back of the tank! My most expensive purchase so far and it does not want to be seen. When I add more live rock I am hoping he moves again! I hope your mushrooms are at least at the front of your aquarium! The baby feather duster looks like a three inch long maggot with a tiny little fan attached to its head. So very cute!
  9. Good morning, Connie. I was thinking about emailing you directly and then thought I should try a post in the saltwater section of the forum. I should have known you would be the first to reply . That is so very SWEET. A baby feather duster. All I can say is AAAAWWWW - is it ever cute. Did the first water change yesterday with no problems. And yesterday morning I noticed the clown fish is ALREADY dancing in the anenome, though just on and off. The clown seems to like it high in the tank, and the anenome likes it low in the tank - so the clown just visits now and again! As you can tell - my enthusiasm is definitely NOT wearing off! I cannot believe I lived this long without a saltwater tank! Best thing I ever bought in my life is your 26 gallon salt tank  .
  10. Hi, there. I bought a 26 gallon salt aquarium here on the forum a couple of weeks ago and everything seems to be going well. I have two feather dusters, and when I was looking in the tank last night, I found what looks like a baby feather duster! It is clinging to the underside of some live rock, is white and about four inches long, and has a tiny little fan-like thing coming off the front that is see-through. It looks exactly like a baby feather duster with no colour. Sorry I do not have a digital camera yet or I would snap a picture. Do feather dusters breed? Do I have a baby feather duster on my hands, or some awful tank hitchhiker that I should scrape off the rock and get rid of when I get home? Thanks for any replies from the knowledgable salt addicts this forum attracts!
  11. The tang is incredible as well. Thanks so much for the helpful and useful links! I am starting to think I had better slow down and do some planning as I only have 26 gallons to play with. Some thoughts on your reef tanks:  . I think that about covers it!
  12. Good Lord, Connie, that is absolutely gorgeous. Love the new clam and the tank looks great. How many gallons is that baby? Where do I get me some of these "moonlights" for the 26 gallon you sold me last weekend? Then I can watch it all night as well as all day! I should not even be speaking to you, as you are a saltwater pusher and got me addicted to this very expensive hobby, but I am so darn happy I shall forgive you this time. Let me know if/when you are selling anything salty, and I will be on the doorstep of the "House of Blue Light" in no time! Karen

    FX5

We bought an FX5 from Pisces in Calgary for about $280, and they had lots. Perhaps you could call them, put it on a credit card, and have someone in the travel section deliver to you.
  14. Aquarium.bmpHere is a shot of the bottom corner of our 150 gallon tank. Rod's sister took the picture and then emailed it to me as I do not have a digital camera. For some reason, most of the fish were hanging out in that one bottom corner when she took the shot. It is truly not that crowded. What you see here are almost all of the fish in the bottom 1/4 of the tank.
  15. Neil, that is a great picture of the fry being sucked back in by the mom. If you are not into professional fish photography (is there such a thing?) you should be!
  16. Keep an eye on your shipwreck. I bought a huge one for a 150 gallon tank, and inside of six months the paint was coming off it. I took it back to the store. When you pay hundreds of dollars for an ornament you expect it to last a little better!
  17. How did you go about making that cool background? I love the red rock - it totally snaps in the tank!
  18. The boyfriend's name is Rod, and he has not picked out a cool fish handle as of yet. I only have computer access at work at this time, so you will not be hearing from Rod. We are thinking that for Christmas we might just buy each other a home computer - all the better to keep in touch! Thanks a lot for the welcome. Makes a person feel right at home! Karen
  19. Hi, everyone. We have a 150 gallon tank containing the following: 10 F1 Yellow Labs; 4 Red Empress; 2 Red Jewels; 2 Blue Zebras; 3 Peacocks (various); 1 Frontosa; and 1 Placo. Some of these are not malawi but I thought I should add everyone who is in the tank. We also have a 33 gallon and a 20 gallon that are full of fry from the breeding labs and jewels. The 20 gallon was supposed to be a quarantine tank, but if you have fish breeding, well, you know how it goes... Karen Oh, yeah. I forgot one. An electric blue with a white blaze from his nose to his tail.
  20. I note that the "electric blues" in the second photograph are a brighter turquoise blue than the rest, who are coloured more of a navy blue. I thought the brighter blue must mean the "iceberg" gene, but I have since learned that relates to the white blaze at the top of the fish. Can somebody explain to me the difference between the two? I have a really nice navy coloured one, but I am looking to buy a bright turquoise one. If they do not get along, I will trade the navy blue one to the LFS. Thanks for any help you can provide!
  21. Hi, there! My name is Karen and my boyfriend and I are fishkeepers in Calgary. We have a 150 gallon main tank, a 33 gallon fry tank, and a 20 gallon quarantine tank. Unfortunately, the quarantine tank is full of fry as well at this time as we are overstocked. My fish list includes a colony of F1 yellow labs (11), two Red Jewels, 2 Blue Zebra, six OB peacocks and a couple of bottom feeders. This forum looks like a lot of fun as it is for people in Alberta. I am always checking out Cichlid Forum.com but that is geared worldwide and I like the idea of this local forum. Great idea, whoever came up with it!
