  1. Try the shallow warmer parts of large ponds and don't wait to long the fairy shrimp seem to be peeking right now
  2. Went out to the pond today down the road and it was loaded with tiny fairy shrimp(got about 2 solid cups in 15 minutes) there was also decent amounts of glass worms and cyclops. No daphnia or mosquito larva yet.
  3. Well when I remove brine shrimp eggshells with bleach I neutralize them with vinegar afterwards and because of this thread I googled neutralizing bleach-and vinegar came up as one of the ways
  4. All I suggested to Brad was if used bleach to clean his tank to neutralize the bleach with vinegar afterwards(vinegar neutralizes bleach and it's probably cheaper than declor)
  5. I guess I'm confused so vinegar does not neutralize bleach and bleach by itself does not do an adequate job of killing bacteria?
  6. Bacteria ? I thought that was what the bleach was for?
  7. Or you could just strip them ;the fry will be easy to tell apart
  8. I've got a new plan. Instead of moving my 30 galaxy's into the sun room(unheated)I'm thinking of just moving them in to the soon to be vacated Koi trough I have in the basement (much more stable environment) the trough is approx 120 gal 6'x 2' with rounded ends and full about 23'' deep. Since most of my experience is with cichlids I was wondering how to set up the bottom and plants etc. To get a natural and reproductive bio-type?
  9. Why would your fish get sick because a turtle was in the tank before ? I think just a general cleaning would suffice. If you do use bleach make sure you neutralize it with vinegar afterwards.
  10. I agree I thought the 1mm was to small for my 4'' to 5'' D. dimidiatus's and picked up some 3mm and all they did was fill up thier mouth's and chew away till you could see small particles flying out of thier gill plates so I went back to the 1 mm( any chance of a 2mm in the future RD ? )
  11. I was thinking about that already Charles since the tricotis right now prefer to hang out near the top of the tank probably same as the paracyps ( I have not yet seen the tricotis near the bottom not even to pick up food) I also think I will pick up a group of barbs or bigger tetras for dither fish.
  12. It's also great when setting up new tanks take a cycled filter off an old tank exchange it with your new filter and your new set-up will have a big kick-start with a cycled filter
  13. When they were in the 90 gal they were with 16 ruby reds 1-1.5'' and 8 stevensi tigers 1.5'' and everything was fine that I could see except when I turned on the light I'd have one fish beat to crap so I moved them thinking it was the peacocks or haps but the trend continued in the 45 gal. What really confuses me is that they get along so well except in the dark. I don't think they are smashing into things in the dark as the wounds(shredded fins including tail, missing eyes, etc)look like fish aggression.I'm setting up a 120gal today so they will be going in there on saturday with a bunch of Callochromis macrops and Paracyprichromis's so I'll see how that goes before I try the dither route.
  14. I had them in a 90 I moved them into the 45 so I could keep a closer eye on them I've tried crowding them .done all the usual stuff soon as the lights go off wham one and only one gets a serious whooping this is causing me grief as I've ordered 20 more and still haven't solved this problem other than leaving the lights on 24/7
  15. They are in a 45 gal 12x48 footprint theres some large slate and some slate stacks about 8'' high and a few plastic plants. The fish(the 4 that are left)are about 2'' long
  16. Any body have any experience with Benthochromis tricoti ? I'm having a problem with aggression which only occurs in the dark they get along great during the day or when the lights are on but every morning when I've had the lights off at night one will be mortally wounded or missing an eye etc. :boom: Tried googling them but only find pictures or general info
  17. :shifty: Here's a brainstorm I'll talk to some seafood dealers perhaps they can bring them in as live fish for consumption(just wait a long time before you eat them) as they are used for food in Alaska.Yeah I'm sure it's a 500 yard shot without a scope but ya never know.I'd need you to pm me fax#
  18. If you have any concerns about your heater use your back-up heater and keep the one that's in the tank now as your back-up. Waiting for it to go is risky you could end up cooking the whole tank.
  19. Would the legal export/import thing not be the same as importing any other legal live fish from the states? If you want Toirtis I can fax you the article about this fish.
  20. Well according to the article I'm reading they are very adaptable and that 68 degrees is within their temperature range. They live in weed choked ponds in sphagnum bogs in the summer and can tolerate extreme conditions
  21. My information states that they are highly adabtable and can withstand extreme temperature changes and in the summer lives in temperatures in the 68 F range (water temp) I'm not giving up quite yet perhaps a trip to Alaska is in the books
  22. Anybody(a.k.a birthdayboy today) know if Dallia pectoralis the Alaska blackfish is legal and/or available in the hobby.Been reading up on them and I think they would make great room temperature or pond fish
  23. I have 3 little Polypterus ornatipinnis's.One male and two females about 4''
