JORG
Went out to the pond today down the road and it was loaded with tiny fairy shrimp(got about 2 solid cups in 15 minutes) there was also decent amounts of glass worms and cyclops. No daphnia or mosquito larva yet.
African_Fever
I was actually looking into a pond the other day wondering if there were any fairy shrimp to be found yet. Thanks! I'll have to make sure I get out this week and get some!
JORG
Try the shallow warmer parts of large ponds and don't wait to long the fairy shrimp seem to be peeking right now
corrosionjerry
Jack how do catch those critters...and when you say 2-cups do you really meen two overcrowded full cups of critters?
JORG
I use a large aquarium net with fine mesh on a 8 foot pole you just swirl it around in figure eights without touching the bottom(so you don't get a bunch of pond gunk in it).two cups means 2 cups full without water
corrosionjerry
So so you Freeze the critters in portions?
corrosionjerry
When you say pond Jorg are we talking standing water like in a slew or is this from a manmade pond?

JORG
I go to natural sloughs I prefer sloughs in cow pastures ( no herbicides sprayed every year)
k9outfit
No open sloughs around here yet; still icebound...

k9outfit
Nope, haven't tried it yet, but think I will this spring. Good point about the herbicides though; maybe I'll have to hit up one of the farmers around here to collect from their sloughs, instead of going to the roadside one.... Toirtis
I am surprised...I would have guessed that we were still a couple of weeks early for shrimp and daphnia to really be going....may have to hit a pond or two tomorrow.
corrosionjerry
Hermatage Park in Edmonton has several large sloughs/ No herbicide etc for sure... Probably a great collection area..and it is public so no need to ask for admitance...
African_Fever
I checked a couple sloughs out while working today (SE of Calgary around Lomond), and didn't see too much yet; some daphnia and water beetles, but no shrimp there yet.
