Plants and Discus?

Have had plans now for quite some time to set up a large Discus tank, but need info on live plants for this if possible. I am concerned of the higher temp. the tank will be at for plants. Is it true that if acclimated slowly (1 degree every two weeks) that the plants will adjust, and still grow?

Please excuse my ignorance here, but I have yet to own a planted tank.

Thanks in advance!

Robert

If you've never owned a planted tank before... I would advise against diving head first into a planted discus tank. Especially not a 230g (or similar) sized tank.

I'd suggest a 10-29g tank, with some hardier fish so you can test the waters and learn the "Finer" points of fertilizing, the importance of CO2 etc. In a 230g - althought it's more stable, when things do go wrong, it's a lot harder and more expensive to fix.

Definitely do some reading, www.thekrib.com has some great readings. Although personally I really Dislike Robert hudson and his buisness / buisness practices - www.aquabotanic.com has some decent articles for the beginner.

Some of the things you will really want to understand - PMDD, comercial ferts for a 230g planted tank are not going to be cheap, realize that most people have evolved beyond the basic PMDD recipe and now add PO4.

CO2 - while i would recommend you start out with a yeast based system (there's a fine art to tweaking these to get them to run Just right - it's a good primer - if you can get a DIY CO2 system working right - you'll have no trouble with compressed systems). Starting to collect the parts for a pressurized system would be smart too (one of our members here has one on aquabid i noticed the other day).

And definitely do your research, a 230g tank is not a very easy or cheap tank to light for plant growth. You'll definitely need to give some thought to what you want to grow (tropica has a great search engine - allows you to specify plants with various needs and tollerances).

Awesome!

Thanks for all the good info, and warning-seems like nothing is cheap in this hobby! I would really like a large system, but I see what you are saying-perhaps start smaller with the plant idea. Was planning on having the tank temp @ 80-82 degrees, put no plans on breeding, haven't the time to jump into that process!

later;

Rob
