sharuq1
This is my first pair of Aphyosemion striatum. I think they are gorgeous and I would really like to breed them. Does anyone have advice on their care, breeding and care of eggs and fry? I have looked on the net but I would really like advice from the breeders here. Currently: The pair are now in a 2.5g tank, 3 sides are covered, as well as a small portion of the front so they can have a dark corner. There is a small hob filter, set to basically a trickle--with a sponge over the intake, no heater, no light. There are 2 boiled "mops", one at the top and one at the bottom with a tiny clay pot to hide in. The top is covered with glass, with the exception of the tiny slit across the side where the filter is. I am feeding them nls and cyclopeeze at the moment, I also have frozen mysis on hand. I added a few drops of blackwater extract, as the water is quite hard here. Edited October 10, 2007 by sharuq1
sharuq1
Oh my goodness. I found 3 eggs on the top mop today! :smokey: This morning I had a scare with the water quality and thought I may have killed off my male, so I was feeling rather discouraged--but he seems ok now. Yay! Now if I can get any to hatch is the next question... Here's hoping.
Tanked
I bred a lot of A. striatums and they did not require any special care. I removed the eggs from the mops and hatched them out in a tupperware type container. I fed the fry micro foods and then live BBS. The adults would eat anything however I did give them live BBS and some white worms. The use of live foods will increase your egg yield dramatically. sharuq1
That's encouraging, thanks Tanked! I would like to feed live foods, however there is not much available here for that. Just bbs at the stores. Suggestions? On another note, while gathering eggs yesterday I llooked in and saw 8 eyed up ones. I'm very excited. Hope I don't kill them. :boxed:

Fresh hatched shrimp is good for them. I don't have much faith in frozen BBS as most of the protein is lost as the baby shrimp basically busrt when frozen, better than nothing though. Someone is your area must have white worms or grindal worms so you can get a culture going otherwise continue feeding the adults good quality flake, mine like NLS growth formula, frozen shrimp and bloodworms. I have quite a few A. marginatums and Fundulopanchax gardreri mamfensis right now and they were all raised on spray krill, vinegar eels, micro worms and live BBS. There is no substitute for conditioning and growth then live foods. Rick
