flowers at 3 AM

I went out to let my daughter's dog pee at 1 AM and was struck by northern lights! They were right above me , bright as can be and dancing. The colours were outstanding. I normally see these lights come October. I hurried back into the house to get my camera and tripod. Being as I've never used the night settings before I set it to the auto settings. It only took me 3-5 minutes to get it all outside and by then the lights had moved to the north and were barely visible . I was so disappointed . I'll go out tonight and try again ....just maybe.

Since I'm out there I might as well practice, so I selected some subjects and here are a couple of shots. The only lighting was the streetlight across the street . Click on them to see a better shot.

I'm wondering why they are not focused until you click on them....humm

There was no flash . The aperture was open for more than 9 seconds gathering ambient light. Across the road and up the street was a street light . This was the only light source. I found it interesting that it gave a very red to amber glow .

Thanks . :)

What time did they start?

I found it interesting that it gave a very red to amber glow .

This is a result of the bulbs CRI

Colour Rendering Index

Many street lights are HPS-High Pressiure Sodium

Nearly all of the light is in the red end of things. Hps rendering is around 27.

High quality daylight bulbs are closing on 90

Further off topic ,,, Many digital cameras now have a "white balance adjustment"

Using the available light you "tell" the camera what white is.

Then, it has the ability to make its own adjustments from there.
