chloeclose
A little more info might help a bit ... like how long has the tank been running, what kind of light do ya got on there, how many hours a day are they on, what kind of plants and how many, ferts, etc... BUT brown algae is usually due to low lighting and not enough plants to eat up the excess nutrients, IME anyways. Also it is quite common in newly set up tanks. Samgoody
i had this tank running for 1 & a half year but just adding plants since Feb. Its a 70 gal.(48" wide) tank with 1 power glo and 1 aqua glo(total of 80w) for lighting(leave on for about 10-12 hours a day), i have a few crypts, a few java ferns and 1 anubias, i use flourish iron and flourish once a week. I am not sure if its because I don't have enough plants or too much fert., or too much light....... any thoughts?
chloeclose
Hmmm, well, I'm no expert but it could be too much of the wrong kind of ferts, your plants are mainly root feeders not water column feeders, so there could be excess in the water that the algae is taking advantage of. Also 80 watts on a 70G is pretty low light. What colour spectrum are those bulbs?

Garhan
i had this tank running for 1 & a half year but just adding plants since Feb.Its a 70 gal.(48" wide) tank with 1 power glo and 1 aqua glo(total of 80w) for lighting(leave on for about 10-12 hours a day), Samgoody, check out the Krib There is loads of good info, it will keep you going a week or two just to get caught up on the reading alone. If you have not had brown algae problems in the past year then you might consider changing to new bulbs, if you havent done so already. Your light will begin to decrease in output rather significantly after 6-8 months. Try that first before you go crazt. Keep up the water changes also in the meantime. Also since you have only just begun to add plant since february (assuming 2005) then this would be a standard transition in a planted tank for a little while. Do regular W/C twice a week at 20-25%, until algae is gone. Brown algae is not hard to cleanup eventually. Also 80 watts of light over a 70 gallon tank would be considered an extremely low light tank. Which is OK provided your plant selection tolerates low light. Going by your plant list , they all do well in lower light. How dense is your planting. You can PM me a photo so that I have something to work with, and then I should be able to give you better advice.
