fairdeal Posted December 5, 2009 Report Share Posted December 5, 2009 If the impeller is badly grooved it needs to be replaced. There is nothing else you can do. Over time it will eventually just stop. You definitely want to replace before that happens and yes shaft and impeller at the same time. The grooving is caused by sand and/or snails at my place but that is just the cost of running aquaclears with those things in the tanks. Mine last a few years on average - some a lot longer but when you start hearing the clicking from the impeller it is just a matter of time. The impellers turn at such a high speed the grooving is inevitable especially from sand. If you do have sand you can also try raising the input tubes and putting a foam over the bottom of the intake but eventually the sand works its way in.
