Why am I getting a 0.5 ppm ammonia reading from new water?

I took about a liter of water from my 5 gallon to add some bacteria to the new tank, but that should only be a drop in the bucket to a 29 gallon.

Kinda late in the thread, but I wanted to comment on this since it seems no one else did.

Bacteria grows on surfaces. There is little to none free-floating in the water column, so taking water from one tank and adding it to another for this purpose is rather useless.

I took the filter cartridge and positioned it in front of the bio wheel and rubbed it on it a little bit
