leaky sump fitting

Well, I got my new (used) aquarium set up and the seal to drain the water into the sump tank leaks. My husband tried to tighten the fitting to stop the leak and he said it popped the thread or something. He seems to think the hole is too big for the size of pipe in it as there is too much movement from the pipe when it is wiggled.

Anyways, does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it?

My husband seems to think that he will just tighten it as much as possible and then smear a whole bunch of silicone on it. If there is still a leak, it will just drain into the sump tank directly below it. I am a little leery of that plan because to be honest, I don't remotely understand the principle behind the whole drain pipe/ drilled tank/ pump thing. I am not exactly thrilled with the prospect of a ton of water on my floor.

I think there is supposed to be a rubber gasket thing that presses down and seals the opening ...at least that is what my husband says is supposed to happen. The cracked tightening ring thing on the smaller plastic pipe (the one that pumps the water back into the main tank) is holding fine. My husband put a metal hose clamp on it and it is fine.

The water leaks out of the larger one at a pretty fast rate. Perhaps the rubber gasket thing moved a bit or isnt flat or something. It is hard to see what is happening down at the bottom of the overflow.

ok...I think we got it fixed. We didn't have it centered well enough over the hole. It seems very snug now and no leaks. We will wait and see if it stays that way and then maybe run a bit of silicone around the underside just to be on the safe side. Keep your fingers crossed for me. :)

I reached down and felt around the bottom and the gasket is there and intact.
