street cypher
I'm not planning on breeding bichirs anytime soon, but it seems to be a very common question asked on some forums. As far as i can remember, Christian, you've bred ornates. I'd just like to know how you accomplished it. Thanks.
Toirtis
Ornates and senegals....currently working on palmas polli and delhezi. Large tanks (6' x 3' x 2'), planted, with plenty of wood and rock-work, but still lots of open space....manipulation of photoperiods (seasonal cycles, but with small variances), and large, frequent water changes to simulate rainy season...that was all it took to trigger spawning, as per egg collection and hatching, I pretty much followed what Dr. Kodera wrote in his book. Raising the fry is tricky, as you really need to keep them seperately, as they are beastly little cannibals, but fortunately, growth is quick, so hatch to sale-able size is just a few short weeks. street cypher
Did they pair off in a group, or did you just throw a male and female together? Whats the name of the book written by Dr. Kodera? Edited February 1, 2006 by street cypher
Toirtis
Kodera's book is "Jurassic Fishes" by TFH...it is out of print, but the CAS has a copy and copies show up on eBay fairly regularly. Just pairing the bichirs seems to work, but I prefer to give them multiple options when I can.
street cypher
I'm guessing once the eggs were fertilized the females body swelled/got fat. Once the eggs were deposited you separated them, but did you give them any special treatment? Antifungal meds? increased temp? Thanks in advance, i have a lot of questions!
