  1. eggs hatched while I was at school!!!!!! these things are huge compared to the convict wrigglers I had a while ago. male dug a out an area under a rock and the female is still spitting eggs into it from the slate they layed the eggs on. im hoping I can sell some to petland and not use them all as feeder fish.
  2. cool, have fun with that, I always liked jardini over the red ones, they look so slick
  3. I agree with jay I would like to point out something that happened at golds, they where selling dovii, one of the meanest and deffinently one of the biggest cichlids you can get. they had quite a few but I gauntee that there arnt that many people as there was fish that are ready to take on a full grown male dovii. but I walk in there, a 14 year old kid and say I want to buy a dovii. I dont know who i was that sold my my second dovii but tat erson made damn sure I was up to it. he asked how long I had been keeping fish, if I knew how big and agressive these guys got and lastly, if I had a tank big enough to hold such a monster. well I told him I didnt but I planed on getting one before he/she got to big for my 90. The salesman said I should probably wait to get one. I thought that was very well done and professional, when a freind asked dennis to buy his red devil he was also asked about his tank situation. cudos to golds!!! btw I got my dovii :shifty:

  9. I did it, I finaly managed to breed my red terrors. 1 big water change 7 days ago and a varied diet including live worms with slightly raised temp and it happened. I did a 1/3 water change yesterday morning and raised the temp a bit more and when I came home from school I found a surprise. now im gonna need some help. the only thing I have bred before is convicts so really this is my first time. how long should I expect it to be before the eggs hatch and after should I remove the parets or what?

  12. If you are thinking about getting into some american cichlids there are a few quick thinks you should look at. of course dont just go by this, it is only meant to be a quick reference to see what may fit you best. Always do lots of reaserch before buying a fish. I would recomend a 75 or 90 gallon tank for your first setup. (unless you want to keep small un-agressive species like angels and rams) It is easy to keep the right temp and water conditions due to its large water volume and can easily hold most of the american cichlids. for example a nice, showy starter tank could have a male green terror, a few firemouths and a couple of convicts. there are many combinations you can do in a 75 or 90 gallon tank. Some people really like the idea of a wetpet because it is not uaualy something you can have with africans. some cichlids are very personable like midas, red devils and oscars. when placed in a solitary tank (usualy 55 gallons) and given personal attention these fish act almost like dogs and become very owner responsive and develope a deep perosnality. Here are some commonly seen/ good starter american cichlids. large agressive cichlids - green terror min tank size: 55g (you could have a few filler fish) recomendation: great for beginners (very showy) temperment: varys alot but on averege "agressive" _____________________________________________________________________________ - red devil min tank size: 75g, Or larger would be preffered recomendation: very personal, a rd would be a great "wet pet" and a good first american cichlid but probably not for a first time fish keeper temperment: again lots of variation but usualy a bit more agressive than the gt _____________________________________________________________________________ festae (fes-tay)/red terror min tank size: 75 gallon for females and 5x2 footprint for males (thats 1 fish) recomendation: deffinently not for biginners unless you plan on keepng a female by herself (excelent show fish). temperment: very very powerfull and agressive _____________________________________________________________________________ - texas cichlid - this cichlid is often confused with the prettier "carpints" cichlid. min. tank size: 75g recomendation: An okay beginners cichlid temperment: temperment ranges from not too agressive to nasty ___________________________________________________________________________ -jaguar cichlid min tank size: 120g recomendation: I wouldnt recomend this fish to someone who hasnt kept agressive fish before. jag's grow large, fast and extreamly powerfull. you must be carefull when choosing decorations and tank mates (if any) temperment: very agressive _____________________________________________________________________________ - jack dempsey min tank size: 55g recomendation: good for beginners looking for a big fish but be sure to read up on capatable tankmates temperment: agressive but no overly so _____________________________________________________________________________ dovii (dow-vee-I)/wolf cichlid min tank size 120g for females 6.5x2.5 footprint for males recomendation NOT for beginners temperment a pitbull who's facorite chew toy just got confinscated _____________________________________________________________________________ medium sized agressive cichlids -salvini (sal-vee-knee-) min tank size: 55 gallon recomondation: try you luck with convicts first temperment: very, very agressive (with big teeth!) _____________________________________________________________________________ -convict min tank size: 20g recomendation: great for the begining fish keeper/breeder makes a good "filler fish" temperment: agressive especialy when spawning _____________________________________________________________________________ -blue acara(ak-are-ah)i] min tank size: 33g recomendation: fairly good beginner cichlid temperment: fairly mild to agressive in temper. _____________________________________________________________________________ - firemouth min tank size: 33g recomendation: I wouldnt say this is the best for a first time fish keeper but fine for a first time american cichlid keeper temperment: mildly agressive. _____________________________________________________________________________ large non-agressive -oscar min tank size: 75 g recomendation: very good for beginers (very social) temperment: mild, agression usualy stems from hunger (a frend's lives with goldfish, though I wouldnt recomend it) -sevrum min tank size: 75 gallon (you could put 2 in there) recomendation: a bit more finiky, not the best for the first time fish keeper (but do-able) temperment: mild (sometimes gets a bit agressive) -----more to come soon-----
  13. to get younguns most people breed a normal and a blue dempsey which produces some of each ( I cant remember which is more common) but anyway that normal jack is usualy the spawn of a normal and blue that didnt fully get the blue gene because it is recesive.
  14. I have just steered clear of them cause usualy they are quite sickly cause of their gene pool the size of a quarter
  15. well my festaes finaly established a constant pair and have been going steady for a while now and today tey started digging what I think is gonna be a nest. I have raised the temp and I did a huge water change yesterday so I think that helped they are looking amazing as ever. ill post pics asap
  16. okay my mom got this crazy Idea that we should get some stupid africans. we got a tank 3 feet long, 1 foot wide and 20 inches tall. she wants lots of fish all different color. currently in the tank we have 2 jewels cichlids and I guess they are stunted because in the yea I have had them hey havent grown at all, the female is 3 inches and the male is 4. other than those two she wants to have a malawi tank. how many fish could we get in there and what would you recomend? More is better we would like to have as many fish as possible so I guess smaller would be better. she likes the look of yellow labs, red zebbras and such, like bright colors. so yea any help would be appreciated by the by african cichlids still suck!
  17. 0h they diddnt tell me that. that blows petland prices suck the half off gets them to what chums are. no offence or anything im sure you have like a company mandate or something
  18. the westills pettland has a pair of barracuda each about 6 inches long. quite colorfull and very interesting. 67 dollars per fish but tuesday nights fish are half off. it staarted with a p and was either paraguay or peruvian barracudas
  19. if you want a texas cichlid I have one you could have for nothing, he is in kinda roughed up from my midas but nothing that wont heal up fine. yea I would suggest at least one gt tey are very colorfull with loads of personality. call golds and see if they still have them. they had a wild batch a while ago that where stunning. what are ou looking for? more small fish or a couple big fish?
  20. he is just a regular pleco and there is algae in th tank. I dunno maybe He has lost his appitite for algae. but that doesnt explain the swiming arround like a regular fish
  21. my pleco has been acting strange. he isnt latching himself onto stuff anymore, instead he is trying to act like a normal fish. he is swimming arround in open water and what is even more weird is he goes up to the surface during feeding time and snags pellets and attempts to suck on them. what the heck is wrong with my pleco? is he confused about his species?
  22. I just have a name for my midas. molly oh and my green terror is "T"
  23. ok I have been using washed playsand mixed with sanitized natural sand for a while in my fishtank. I went to riverfront and the people there told me theat toxins would slowly leach out and kill my fish. is this true or just a marketing thing? if it is or you believe it could be a hazard what sand could I use and where could I get it?
