  1. thanks for your response. That was my fear. the BN pleco just gave eggs too. so far 3 have hatched. the Bala seems to be doing ok. he eats a lot. will try to find new homes for the rest.
  2. Hi, i haven't posted in years and just starting to get back into the hobby. I bought a used 20 Gal tank and inherited the 5 fish along with it even though i just wanted the hardware. i believe the fish require bigger homes. want to explore my options and need opinions Inhabitants 1x5.5" Bala shark. 2x3.5" Bristle-nose Pleco, 1x3.5" regular Pleco, and 1x4" Yoyo loach. Filter Hardware is 1xTetra Whisper EX30. i threw out the stock filter media and replaced it with a big aquaclear 70 sponge and some bio media. i added a Second filter AC20 with a sponge wrapped on the intake. one air stone and heater as well. The bala shark to me needs way more room however he is blind in both eyes. i am conflicted about giving him away because if he goes to a bigger tank, it will have a harder time feeding but if i keep him..... how long can i keep this setup? what would you all recommend in terms of keeping and offloading for a healthier setup for all? i don't care about getting more fish right now, just want to make sure the current ones are taken care of first. Thanks.
  3. Are you using sand as a substrate? My bet is that you have substrate getting in to the impeller causing your problem. Use a pre-filter and you should be fine. the pumps are attached to the PVC pipes with an adapter. all the pumps have a foam sponge attached. one tank has gravel and the other has sand. they work great but don't seem to last long. i guess i need to thoroughly clean them out each water change to prevent damage
  4. hi guys, i just had 2 of my maxi jets 1200 crap out on me. made by Marineland. the unit itself is fine, but the plastic propeller would crack and cause a whole lot of noise. i already replaced one of the parts and its been only 2 months and now its broken. i bought 2 other units for my other tank and now they are cracked as well after 5 months. Anyone else with similar issues? FYI i use them for Under gravel jets but i don't think this type of application makes it fail. i'm starting to think they make these propellers out of doo doo on purpose to make money on the replacement parts.
  5. thanks for all the suggestions. i picked up a roll of fiberglass door screen at homedepot. dont know how i am going to tie them down though. I'll try zip ties
  6. try using egg crating,... i buy mine from homedepot!! egg crate spacings are too big for this application. and i need something that can be molded. a mesh type wont let anything through. I've used egg crates before and they are cheap and awesome!
  7. hi guys, my cousin recently bought a 210 marineland tank with 2 built in overflows at the corners. the problem she is having is that her eels are getting into the overflow and into the sump. Is there a type of wire mesh that is aquarium safe that someone has had experience with? i would like to block the overflows more.
  8. sorry about the loss. similar thing happened to me awhile back. my ryukin goldfish swam into a knocked over ornament and couldnt get out because the gills were in the way. i tried pulling the thing apart but it was some strong plastic and the thrashing didnt help. i ended up using a hammer and prying apart the ornament. The fish was fine with some scales missing.
  9. thanks for all the help everyone.
  10. Looks good. are you planning to add another filter at the other end? just to get more flow.
  11. I've never used salt before but i will give it a shot. Yes many times my fish would finish off most of the floaters with no problems since it was pretty fresh, but this time it was pretty rotten. what is the recommended dosage for salt?
  12. So in the last Month I've had a couple fish die on me. From not Eating at all to finally Floating upside down. Water tested fine and the others were eating normal. Last Night i saw a tail flapping between the rocks at the bottom. didn't think much of it, figured a fish was digging for some food. today i saw the same thing and had to investigate. i starting removing the rocks and got to the last one and the moment i did the rotting fish came a jarred. it was probably there for 2 weeks or more.I'm assuming that the old fish ate from this guy and got sick and croaked. my problem is that i went to grab my fish net to remove the corpse and when i turned around i saw my Frontosa and the rest of his buddies devour the body. Im worried that they will eventually stop eating from the sickness and meet the same fate. i immediately did a 50 percent W/C and double dosed with prime. Do you guys think that my Cichlids will be ok? Should i skip todays feeding session? is there anything i can feed or medicate them with that will purge the rotten food from their system?
  13. hi guys, just thought id throw this out there. Whenever my Aqauclear U-Tubes gets gunky i throw some Gravel in it and add a bit of water, close both ends with my palms and shake it like a martini a few times and rinse, gets every nook and cranny.I've used those wire brushes but they suck at cleaning the tube.
  14. one 5 inch ryukin, a 2 inch Oranda and a 3 inch Telescope. the ottos are about 2inchs. Weekly 50 percent water changes and gravel cleaning. Filter floss gets replaced at the same time. haven't tested the Levels for awhile now but its been running for 7 months. Nitrates should be below 10ppm
  15. Hi guys, Me and my Girl are going for Vacation for 3 weeks. Shes got a 25 Gal tank with 3 Goldfish and a couple of ottos with 2 AC 70s. they will be fed by an auto feeder. im thinking it should be ok without a W/C for the duration. shes gonna teach her friend how to do a W/C with a python. i think its safer to let it be. what do you all think?
