  1. 5 is not a good number. Discus are a schooling fish, the bigger the group the better. Water changes are key and so is food. I have both schools of discus and pair's. Temp anywhere from 82 to 86. A pair of Discus can be kept in a 30 gallon. Did I mention WATER CHANGES?
  2. I would say no. Here are some tankmates you could put in sterbai cory, cardinals, rummynose, rams. I have Wild Blue Rams with my Discus they seem to do ok. My favorite tankmate is good, clean water!!!!
  3. Once they start, they are worse then rabbits! Been there done that and got rid of them in a hurry!
  4. Well there's a problem right there. for evaporation you use freshwater not saltwater. The salt doesn't evaporate just the water does. Whats your Salinity reading in the tank? PM me and lets continue this there................................
  5. What......... your adding top off water that is saltwater? It seems to me your tank is cycling,I have no idea why.
  6. Anything die in there? Top up with what RO,Tap? These things don't just happen, there will be an explanation somewhere...........
  7. That Temp is low. If the corals die you can replace them yea.
  8. If you have the rock in a tote you need to add a heater as well.
  9. So what are the best places in Calgary to hit for freshwater? I know of Gold's,Big Al's. Is Riverfront still going? Any other Mom and pop stores worth checking out?
  10. All the breeders I know go bare bottom. As mentioned above easier to clean, cause if small you need to feed lots to grow proper. I have gotten Discus from the best Great Lakes Discus and Discus Hans. Your tank will be fine,I don't think you'll need the extra filter or the airstones but keep them handy. You don't need a crazy amount of light either. Get a group of discus and start learning. Remember STABILITY is and CLEAN WATER is KEY!! And don't buy one discus here and one there, buy them all from one source.
  11. You also need to do waterchanges. Food alone will not grow them large. Feed different types of food beefheart,Bloodworms, live worms, flake. PM sent.
  12. LMAO Andy!!!! I remember a few good battles over the Peat and the benefits and the rest of us are stupid!!!! Funny how who can breed and who can't though!! :guns: Like I said Peat was a pain in the A**. I would rather cut my tap water with RO and have the headaches be gone. If I want my discus to raise babies them selves I cut with RO to keep the hardness down. PH I could care less about and to be honest I haven't tested for PH in about 3 years. Softness is where it lies for the fertile eggs. And if I raise babies myself its pure RO til free swimming and they can eat live baby brine shrimp then I throw them all into a 10 gallon tank with tap. Then onwards and upwards as they grow. Do the same with Angels. Peat is too risky and too much of a headache to get right. Why spend all that time doing that when you can simply use RO and get to enjoy your fish more rather than testing and putzing around with water. Like I said been there done that and RO works the best for me. But if peat is what you like all the best to ya!!! Its all good!! Whatever floats your boat!!!!!
  13. Hmmmmm I have to agree here with Andy!!! RO and peat eh? Then boiling? WTF mate? RO is supposed to be neutral at 7.0 PH is it not? Pure RO is supposed to have very little shall we say "crap" in it. So adding Peat to RO is gainning you what? Waht PH are you lookin for? You are gonna ended up havin a crash is my guess. I can't really understand this logic. Why would you boil the Peat in the first place. All I ever did was hang it in my water barrel and left it there. Once in the tank it didn't much change the PH to lower values anyways. Big waste of time IMO. Use the RO with tap water to get more accurate readings. I've bred Discus for 6 years and have been here and done all this. Been here with Rams too. KISS Keep It Simple Stupid best method I ever used.
  14. Hey all got the newest member of the family yeterday!! Shes doin good. The cats aren't too sure about her though. Guess there still wanting the old dog back. The only problem we have is the ongoing battle over the name. As of the morning we have Sasha and Angel. Any help on names would be great just post 'em up. I had to get the last "action" pic in there as shes really good about doing her business on the puppy pads.
  15. sorry to hear that!! Hopefully the other two will fair alot better. RD thanks for correcting me in my post,I guess I should wake up before typing :chair:
  16. Salt kills Discus?????? Ok then!!! :bang1: I already Pm'd you on where to get the BEST advice. I would say that moving the discus and mixing meds will be worse then using salt. If going with metro change 50% water every 8 hours and replace meds with amount lost.
  17. Jen yea I got it from animal world. They were on hold for someone else. I guess they put the other one in a *gulp* 25 gallon. Yea you can breed them. As for males and females you can tell at the ends of the disc close to the tail males have claspers and females don't. I'm gonna try and track down where the second is and try and buy it from the people that have it. Can't see it livin to long in a 25. Wilson thanks for the post and yea would like info on there water prams. Do they sell Rays here also?
  18. Nice!! Where did you get it? Male or female? Expensive?
  19. Got this little beauty for Christmas!!! Very pleased with "her". Now to find a male and see if I can eventually breed these. Sorry the glass is kinda dirty :bang1:
  20. Thanks peeps. No Ryan they are not the ones I sent you pics of. Petland Discus eh? Be prepared cause you get what you pay for. Been there done that,Petland is a joke.
  21. Heres what I came down to,when I went to water changes this afternoon. Another pair *sigh* Male is a Red TurkX and the female a blue Turqx with wild. Should be interesting babies!! I guess I'll have to take them out of the community tank and get them a pad of there own!!
  22. LOL Josh you are a typin maniac!! What I did was bought all my live rock from a guy that was gettin out of SW all together. Didn't take long for it too cycle and I had fish and my clean up crews in within 3 weeks. That was the pain free way!! But yea go with Josh's plan sound A OK to me.
  23. If your really worried about your water,go for RO. Thats what I use.
