  1. I really should have saved the remains for your rays... didn't even think of it until just this moment. :bang1: David
  2. Yeah. I may have to start thinking about this tank a little differently now... The same guy came about 1" out of the water tonight and took my little finger, up to the second knuckle, in his mouth. Didn't really hurt but sure did surprise me. I haven't read anything about them biting hard enough to injure people but after what he did to the other fish, I have to wonder... this makes 3 he has knocked off in the last 4 months. And, he can't be hungry because I feed that tank a *lot* of food. Always something new to learn! David
  3. Ooh, that is very, very nice...
  4. Here it is. That is a AA battery beside it. Looking at the corpse, I would guess two bites but I'm not a CSI kind of guy David
  5. Had a bit of a disagreement between a 8" Paratilapia Polleni (large spot) male and a female Aulonocara during feeding time. One minute, there were 2 fish, the next minute about 1.7 fish. Sheesh. I've got a pic of the victim, showing the bite pattern. If you are interested, 'cause you happen to be into predators, send me a PM and I'll forward it along to you. Or, if posting here would be better, let me know, OK? I didn't want to creep anybody out unnecessarily. David
  6. Same weather loach getting sideswiped by a passing eel a few moments later - I love the 'expression' on it's face!
  7. Plus one of her big weather loaches.
  8. This is one of my daughter's Kuhli loaches - they usually will not allow a camera near them so I grabbed a pic when I could. David
  9. This guy was super aggressive during feeding time tonight and stole a lot of his tankmates' food. So much, that he has a bit of a belly showing... David
  10. Whoah, nice! I usually think of macro as being a magnification mode. If the image on the 'film' is at elast the same size as it was in 'real life' then you are at 1:1 macro. If it is bigger on film, then you are magnifying and are in some form of macro mode. Here is a wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macro_photography Cheers! David
  11. And the second "nostril" shot...
  12. (Accidently) discovered I have a second, "Super Macro mode" on my camera. Lighting is an issue but it is supposed to take photos at 1 cm (sheesh). Here are a couple of shots - but it sure makes me wish I had Sean's lenses, camera, and ability! First one is a Buffalo Head, second is one of the spiny eels. Happy New Year everyone! David
  13. Wish my plants looked that nice... Jealous David
  14. When I had crayfish, I learned that it is really easy to overfeed them... not that they got sick, but that they grew so quickly that they had difficulties when molting. I just pass this along so that your beauty(s) don't have the problems I mistakenly gave mine. David
  15. thefishdude: You should have quite a tight lid. I offset the need by having 2 to 3 inches of open air before the lids but my lids cover everything anyway. That said, they *are* jumpers, especially when startled. One of them once jumped over a foot straight up out of the tank: it grabbed a worm from my hand just under the water surface, went to the bottom and smacked the worm on a rock on then went straight out of the top of the tank. It landed back in the tank and kept on going. I almost fainted... I've tried them with cichlids but somethimes the cichlids get too aggressive and start nipping at them. I'm thinking about adding my compressiceps juvies but I am not sure. Tamer community fish should be OK. Highly recommended. They are currently with 3 weather loaches, 1 horse-face loach, 2 bristlenose plecos and 2 albino plecos. Toirtis: What kinds of eels do you have? David
  16. Just to prove that I have something else in my tanks... What you can see of this guy in the picture is about 8" (20 cm). He's almost ready to start breeding, has a mate and everything, but I have too many other fish in the tank at the moment... There is a bit of a bloom from the flash in his middle. Fairly territorial - will try to nip at you and drive you off in certain circumstances. Dark black velvet with shiny sequins; almost like a bit of Vegas in your tank. Hope everyone has a great Christmas season! David
  17. Weather loaches do fine at 77F although I have heard that people even winter them outside in frozen-over deep ponds. We have 3 together and they do quite well - have hit about 6-9" or about half of their maximum size. All ours seem to need is quite a bit of food David
  18. Oh man: fish, beer, then :drunk: *and* camera lessons... what more can a fishhead ask for? :smokey:
  19. New since my last photos. I had a Konica-Minolta Dimage Z1 but it was stolen on me while I slept on the airplane. I got a Dimage Z3 a couple of weeks ago from Henry's in Toronto area, via Ebay. Just starting to get used to the fancier stuff like white-balance, flash compensation, metering modes, etc.. Have finally started to get the hang of the manual overrides too. Love the low-light sensitivity of the Z series but the automatic focus just doesn't cut it for aquarium photos. David
  20. Last one. What Froggie has in quality, I make for with quantity! And, no, they aren't kissing! David
