  1. I was hoping someone could give me some advice... I suspected but never confirmed she was carrying babies....sure enough , i found a pile of babies hiding out:). Normally i let nature take its course snd the ones that survive survive. These appear to be the most beautiful babies ive had and would like to aid ss many to adulthood as possible. Should i try to remove them? Separate them in same tank? Or leave them be? I have an existing 10 gallon that the temp would just have to be raised a bit for them. Im scared of hurting them moving them so..... I would appreciate any advice. Thank you
  2. I had the exact same situation with my shark. I had to remove it as he was being far to aggressive in my other tank. He was fine in the tank when the cichlids were smaller( the tank has mixed african mbunas...now they are bigger he is getting picked on by someone. I have my suspicion pointed at one particular fish, not all of them. as I never witness it. His fins are slightly damaged. I think a fair size shark would fare fine in your tank. You could always pull him back out if it was bad. Just a thought.
  3. Hi, I am fairly new to the cichlid world. I have a 80 gallon planted tank that I have gradually put in a mixture of mbunas. This evening when I was watching this tank I found two babies. I don't know from who and there appears to be no one "guarding" them. Is there anything special I should be doing for them? Quite honestly I was just happy with getting the tank up and running and stable. I have only set up this tank a few months ago. I am thrilled to have the babies I just was not sure if there is anything I should be doing? Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks. new cichlid owner
  4. hello, I have a problem that I have been battling for months now and cannot seem to cure. We had a mild case of Ich from pet store and treated naturally by raising temperature. After the raise in temperature my aquarium started to turn green with algae. I continued with extra water changes ( while watching water quality) assuming it was due to temp but once it was lowered it did not improve. After months of trying everything including phospate removers, extra water changes, salt, limit feeding, covering tank etc etc etc there has been no improvement. I ( as a last resort) gave up and pulled out everything fish gravel, filters everything and started new. I rinsed filters but did not replace trying to speed up cycling. I was fortunate not to have lost any fish during this process. Within two weeks my water is now turning green again:( I don't know what else to do besides perhaps moving my tank. My tank was o.k in this location for months before this occured with no algae problem. Does anyone know anything about this to help. I am desperate!!!! This is a 48 gallon planted tank containg 5 rainbows, 5 black skirt tetras, 2 danios, 3 catfish, 1 pleco, 2 sailfin mollies. My water is testing fine and low in phospates. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!
  5. Hi, I am fairly new to fish but have fell in love with loaches. I have 6 clown loaches in a 50 gal tropical planted tank. I recently added some new fish and apparently they brought us a present. ICH. Does anyone know how I can treat the loaches without harming them. I have heard the salt hurts them. I have turned up the temp but it doesn't appear to be helping. My water is testing fine and am still doing regular water changes. Thanks to anyone who can help.
  6. I think I solved the problem....my rainbow fish is the culprit! He stalks the pore little guys and eats em. I have had to move all my smaller fish to another tank. Now I have to try to figure out if I keep him or them. I like them all. We'll see. Thanks for the ideas.
  7. Thanks for the ideas. I don't know who else it could be eating the other guys. The only other fish that is big enough is the goldfish but honestly he is too slow to catch the little guys. I'll try the nightfeeding. Generally I feed everyone towards the end of the night but I'll try anything.
  8. Hi, I am fairly new to keeping an aquarium and am learning lots as I go. I unfortunately trusted someone at a pet store who may not have been accurate in what they described to me. My daughter always loved the catfish she saw. I saw a new one at the petstore and inquired and she said that this pictus catfish was small enough that it would eat off the bottom and leave my fish alone. Needless to say the catfish came home and did fine for a while. Now every morning I wake up and someone is gone! After reading up on the catfish of course I learned that they will eat the smaller fish. I expected the neons perhaps but now my guppies are disappearing. I don't know what to do. I can't really return the catfish as my daughter loves him (and so do I) but I also like my other fish. Do I just make sure I replace the fish I lose with bigger fish? are there kinds he won't eat? can I feed him something else so he isn't so hungry? I have another 10 gallon tank I just set up I thought about putting just guppies in for a while but I don't know. Any ideas? I know that this is my fault for not doing my enitre research first but unfortunately I thought I could trust the seller for the proper info. Next time....not so much! Currently have 50 gallon tank with 1 huge goldfish (leftover who outgrew small tank) 4 zebra danios 1 glassfish 1 mickey platy 3 black skirt tetras 7 neon tetras 2 rainbow fish various guppies other catfish ??? planted Thanks in advance for any ideas...I am new to this.
