  1. Try Nymphea lotus. Very tidy, easy to grow, easy to prune
  2. Mostly for fun, I have recently purchased a four stage Reverse Osmosis (RO) system. Still (no pun intended) have some questions. I have a pair of rams who diligently put eggs down although they never come to fruit. I assume this is because of our hard water which is typically around 120-130 ppm kh. I understand the danger of mixing down water is fluctuations with Ph. I have about five inches of ( Ph neutral) home mixed substrate that is matured about seven months now. the HOB filter has been running for over a year The stocking level is very light planting is quite dense. What is my target KH? What can else be done to safe guard against problems? :well:
  3. Pleased to make your acquaintance. I keep freshwater planted tanks. I toy with substrate materials and have implemented new combinations in all seven setups. I like to think of it as many unique ways of growing algae!

  4. That seems like good advice. I have come to believe that sword plants are more prolific when planted very near to the top of the substrate. I have had them continue to grow very well with root matter exposed. I think I will tug the crypts. a little closer to the surface
  5. I picked up a two of these plants a few months ago. They are the only plants in the tank right now I would describe as "underwhelming". I now cannot recall if this has a rhizome on the underside. Is it possible I have it planted to deep ?
  6. We like Alberta. I had a fern turn black. I blamed it on excess light --- but i guess that would be nearly impossible in a tub as large as yours. Low Nitrates sounds like a more plausible explanation. All kidding aside ,,, buy more fish
  7. Consider that some of our favorite additives are known desiccants, calcium, sulphates, and chlorides. I don't know the chemists integerious math ; but I do know that 10 grams of epsom salts can become 15 grams over time. One may argue ( never I ) the fert power- in that case has fallen %33
  8. I have a planted tank set up for more than five months now and I have still yet to see any malaysian snails. I have a good supply of snails in other tubs, and have planned on relocating some into there. I find they do not harm the plants and I assume they help turn the soil over. Sooner or later they will find away in (via cross contamination) Any one have a reason why this may not be a wise move?
  9. I really don't know what names are attached to which sizes. I bought a bottle measuring about fourteen inches tall. Used sparingly 24 hrs. a day in a 75 it will go about two months or more. I would not recommend any size to bulky to wrestle around. I just did not want you to travel so far just to have someone sell you a paint-ball reservoir that would need refilling every fiftysix hours!
  10. Cranbrook to Calgary is leap enough! Two points @ one cent each gets you my two cents worth Buy (not rent) your own bottle make it a big one With a "customer owned bottle" I am exchanged and out of Praxair in five minutes. If you a having that much trouble finding service, how often are you looking for that headache. Yes, a tall one will cost you an arm and most of one leg; but if your into it and having that kind of trouble finding supply Why muck about?
  11. My ram chased my golden wonder all around a HEAVILY planted 75G for days , I had to separate them. Aplocheilus fry will appear with adults,,,and disappear just as quickly amongst those hungry neighbors
  12. I are no pro. Start with the simple stuff . I have read this thread top to bottom and I have not seen any mention of laundry,,,yes laundry. Do you have a dryer vent hose ? Is you dryer hose free of leaks? Is it vented to the outside of the dwelling? Is it a detached dwelling? If you stand out side with your face on the vent output does it BLAST hot air in your face? If you have answered no to any of these questions ...the source of the humidity is not your aquariums
  13. I bought some eggs from Malaysia. Three types. ZERO hatch. The next poster may have an opposite story. I blame no one :grr:

Sounds like you have weathered the storm. Good for you . This is a problem must people throw fish at. Whosoever ends up in there is one lucky duck!

Do you find the price unreasonable as compared to the quality of the product? Or do you feel unreasonably treated having paid Forty Dollars more for yours? Now that you got me going ,,, What is the warranty duration on a used filter?

    Aphids?

From the fishless cycle. After 3 months?
  18. I am inclined to agree with Slough Shark. --Fantastic photo by the way. My Golden Wonder Killi also show a light spot on top the head. I have read it is photo sensitive. I better not take a picture :smokey:
  19. Your local pharmacy will sell you a baby thermometer for about seven bucks. You can JUMPSTART yeast @ 37 degrees of Celsius

    Aphids?

LOVE those test kits There may be factors I am not aware of; but, without fish I don't think huge water changes could have a negative effect. Either you are feeding or over fertilizing. I honestly don't know how your nitrates are @ 50 ppm :well:
  21. I am still curious as to what an "energy bulb" is. Do Compact fluorescents address all the necessary spectral requirements ?
  22. Whats an "energy bulb" ? is this compact florescent? depending on the lumens you may need a ton of them regardless of their colour temp. Do not confuse colour temp w/spectral output. Close, but not directly related. I have grown plants with 3 X 15 watts of florescent light in a twenty gallon with organic substrate and no Co2. Swords do OK but so far as for stem plants go ,,, it just does not cut it. It is a mix of daylight (6400k X 2) and one Aquatic bulb (very poor CRI when standing alone) Also note your lumen output - it will drop off considerably with aquatic type bulbs I have a few dry landers to tuck in... ( non-fish creatures; often referred to as children) -ham- -ham- -ham-
  23. Hard to photogragh these stinkersTwo months old on the 11th and still barely thicker than a Hygro Stricta root!!!
  24. Thank you for the fantastic compliments. I am quite proud of that patch. Like Scrappy CoCo say's " Its the beegest" Have you ever seen a cat that has swallowed a string? And you don't know which way to pull? My Ameca's LOVE this stuff
  25. Thanks for the encouraging words folks, I had a little photo session, here some better pics of parents
