  1. Nice pickups and tank. Looks like the male is ready to be a dad hopfully the female will be ready soon too. Good luck with them
  2. ya overkill is sometimes best
  3. Cyro makes an acrylic aquarium thickness calculator but I think it's overkill since it states that a 8'L x 31"H closed top aquarium needs 1.121" acrylic sheet while the one I own is only .75" thick. This is where I'm getting lost and was hoping some tank builders could help me sort this out. Thanks for the help. I'll try and get thru the sticky but it contains alot of useless info (arguing) so I never made it thru.
  4. Okay so I located a few sheets in a larger size. I can get sheets in either 10' x 4' or then it jumps to 16' x 6'. My question now would be for any tank builders out there what thickness of acrylic would I need for a 12'x 8' x 4 tank with a 10' x 4' viewing window.
  5. I've used the playsand before and it got into my filters with my fx5 intakes as high as they go in a 36" high tank. It will go over your overflows also. You don't need much fine gravel at all. I used two of the large aquagiant bags (50lbs) for my 300 and that was more than enough.
  6. Thanks for the info on the plecos guys that puts my worries to rest on acrylic then. I'm thinking having some plecos in a big tank like this will be a must instead of going for a swim all the time. I was also debating about pond liner for my tank but will use 1/8" pvc sheets welded together for the liner if go Acrylic and not sure yet for glass. Should be fairly cheap and easy to dismanle if I had to in the future with pvc sheets.
  7. I also have a 300 acrylic and have no problems with clarity and your right it is better insulated than glass. But I'm wondering if I added plecos would they scratch the acrylic. Do you have any plecos in yours?
  8. Ya I'm thinking it gonna cost me alot for either acrylic or starfire. I'm hoping to keep it under $2000. I thought acrylic may have went down but I guess not yet.
  9. Mostly rays but I'm thinking I may need a few plecos for algae control which may be a problem with acrylic I'm guessing. lol ya it's going to be a fun lift. Hoefully my friends won't all be sick that day.
  10. I'll give them a call tommorow and see what they can do. thanks for he info
  11. Price is good and I for sure think I'll maybe be having some problems on that size for glass or acrylic. Thanks for the help
  12. That is a good price. Is that starfie or regular plate?
  13. x2 It is a personal preference but I've removed the sand from all my ray tanks and went with fine round gravel also. Sand may seem fine with small rays but once they get big the sand will be everywhere in the tank when they bury themselves. Also for small rays use only enough fine gravel to cover the bottom and as they get bigger you can add more up tp 1" thickness. I think with the bigger rays you won't have any conflict issues with your oscars except like rudy said water quality. Get the drip system installed and you will save alot of headaches later.
  14. So I've got to the point on my plywood tank build that I need to find window prices for the front. The tank is 12' x 8' x 3'. I want the front window to be either 3/4" starfire glass or 1" acrylic not sure on either but leaning towards the glass. The window will be 11' x 3'. Just looking for thoughts on which way to go and also where to find good prices in Alberta (don't mind the drive to pick up).
  15. I've heard of 27"+ in captivity. And rays are measured across the disk not tip to tail.
  16. Great looking marble. Looks like it arrived in good shape. I really need to plan a trip up and see your setups.
  17. Hey Dustin the stand looks good. This is kinda funny but that stand is almost identicle to the one I built 1.5 years ago. The bolts work perfect for adjusting it. I think you allready mentioned that you were going to put some metal plates under the feet so I think you have everything covered. When you set up your tank make sure you put the tank on the stand first and fill it and leave the bottom off so you can adjust it with wieght on the stand. After it is adjusted then put your bottom plate on and the sump if you go that way. The middle back bolt is a pain if it's up against the wall.
  18. Can't wait to see the outcome
  19. Such a great ray community tank all the best in one tank. Your female henlie is allways amazing to see, just feel sorry for your male.
  20. They're growing quickly, must be quite the little pigs
  21. Also check on how much he is currently feeding them. Like earthgirl was saying there is a eating herarchy and he may not be feeding enough causing issues in his tank. When I cut down on feedings in my tank the rays will start to bite at one another. When there well fed the tank is peaceful.
  22. They look great Kyle. Fat lil buggers. Congrats and great work
  23. There are alot of combinations that are possible but like stated above just watch closely for awhile. Currently I have needlenose gar, clown knife, king kong parrot, panaque pleco and frontosa. I have heard bichirs can also make good tank mates. Just make sure the fish are smaller than the rays and not to small to fit in it's mouth. It also helps if your feeding alot to cut down on aggresson.
