  1. Usually rectics are sold as teacups but other rays can also be sold under this name so make sure you get a picture first and post it so someone could help you identify it for sure. I would get a 6'L x 3'W x 2'h for a tank but yoy may be able to get away with something smaller.
  2. Smallest rays are rectic, scobina, and hystrix. Scobina and hystrix are hard to find rays. Rectics are pretty easy to find but can be picky eaters at first.
  3. There not quite ready yet for sale. I like to get them eating a variety of food first and put on some weight so they will be easy to care for and have an easy transition to a new home.
  4. No problem sticking 2 of the same sex together they really aren't aggresive to each other. Males stay quite abit smaller than females. If you do end up with a pair that breeds for you, you can allways float a laundry basket in your tank for the babies till they can be sold and that way the bottom is till open for the adults.
  5. thanks scottI feed them once every two days. If you can I would feed at least once every day unless your trying to break them onto new foods. Rays have a very quick metabolism. I feed my adult rays twice a day and my babies 3 times a day.
  6. Finally got on a computer with high speed. The rays and setup look really good. How often do you feed them?
  7. The demensions work for 1-3 motoros. Rays aren't territorial so the space is just for there movement and to be able to maintain water quality. If you went with a drip system on that tank you could possibly house 4 or 5 depending on size. Another option is hystrix, scobina or a rectic which you could use a 7' x 3' x 2' or maybe a little smaller. The downside is scobina and hystrix are hard to find and a rectic can be a picky eater.
  8. Was finally able to move my male marble back in with general population so thought I'd grab a pic.
  9. Him getting the glass at all seems like it will never happen, aqua giant keeps delaying the day it comes in. yeah, I know they do... If they don't have it buy may 15 I am buying a sheet of acrylic, but dose silicone stick to acrylic? Read Johnptc's thread on his tanks on mfk for the proper silicone and primer. It has a long cure time for it. Also when using Acrylic you need to have 2.5 tmes the thickness of the acrylic for support around the acrylic window. Also google cyro aquarium thickness calculator to get your thickness yoy need. Zavlar bonds to wood and acrylic and itself.
  10. Looking real good can't wait to see it up and filled. Have you checked into zavlar liquid rubber for a lining possabiity? Been getting alot of hype lately.
  11. You could get away with a 8'L x 4'W x 2'H for a minimun for life for sure, but I think 30"H is better. My females vary alot in size so you may be able to go smaller but just in case they get big this is what I'd say.
  12. Can't wait for them to turn. They look great Tim
  13. All of the rays are very active and some are constantly doing something. They like to play in the filter outlets, bubblers or different currents. If there not doing that they are usually sifting thru the substrate for food. If you put a ray in too small of a tank it may remain more inactive. As far as food goes it will depend on the ray. Earthworms, blackworms, bloodworms, shrimp, shiners (minnows),squid, oyster, clams, crayfish, pellets(carnivore, massivore, sinking gold, and a variety from nls) and a whole lot more. Shrimp or pellets is the cheapest in bulk to buy but you can net your own minnows and freeze them also you can gather worms from an unfertilized area. Motoros are one of the easiest rays to keep.
  14. Aqualog has 2 books "Freshwater rays" and "Freshwater stingrays from south america". The second book is the better of the two for you. Also if you find them pricey there is a book from Barrons called "Freshwater Stingrays" all are the same auther. Monsterfishkeeprs probably is the best forum on the net for freshwater rays, but if you post here there is alot of the same members here with alot of experence and can help you out better since it's all local.
  15. I wouldn't worry as long as you keep your rays well fed. Your oscars are way bigger than my fronts and your arrowna is way bigger than my needlenose gar.
  16. Nice discus and pics. Got my first ones from hybrid not too long ago and am now wanting way more
  17. Where did you get it from? I got mine from homedepot and it was too fine. I just assumed they were all the same but would be interested in checking out what you use.
  18. 18 adult rays are real pigs.lol They eat around 2 pounds of shrimp a day, plus worms , plus pellets , plus minnows and some other treats. Babies don't count. I'll try and post up some pics of my collection over the next weeks. I'd like to really build up some intrest in this section since I think there is alot of people interested or allready have rays and could share alot. I'm allready active on another forum with rays and see alot of the same people from there that can share alot on here. I've had some great people help me with rays on my way up (rudy and african fever) and want to return the favour to other members. BTW would love to see everybody's collectons on here I know there is some stunners!
  19. The male is around 12" and the female is around 24". I'm not too concerned about getting rid of any of the pups in a hurry. I would kinda like too make some deals with people on here to get more people involved in rays.
  20. Thanks guys. This is a pretty big litter for a first and second litter but she is a big female. They tend to have more pups as they get bigger and more litters. The biggest litter I've heard of is 15 pups. Ya my male is a little bugger Kyle. He was all over my female a couple days prior to the births and then just as she finished the last pup I went to get a net to move hime out and came back to find him on her. Not sure if he did the dead but I'm hoping not so I can give her a rest. lol There's not much cash offset from these ones with a 600+ food bill a month, just hoping I can do some trading with other members for some interesting things. Give me a day or two and I should have some new pics up from another set of parents.
  21. Congrats. Got any pics of the pup and parents. Pup must have been a good size. My pups usually don't start feeding for a few days while living off the yolk sack. Great news can't wait to see some pics
  22. My motoro female had her second batch of pups again. Apperently 7 is her lucky number. Woke up at 3:30 am to see her just finishing. Moved the pups right after since the last time one was killed.
  23. I would love to see that theory put to test if one of the corner bolts failed. Placing a torsional load on an aquarium (when one corner is higher or lower than the other 3 corners) is one of the main causes of glass failure in tanks. With a 450 gallon tank, that failure could very well take place immediately. Test done and complete while I was setting up my tank and stand. I have almost the same stand design as Dustin and with one leg threaded so it is off the ground it does not cause the tank to go out very far off level if even noticeable. I would say most people who shim there tanks by other means probably will have there tanks further out than this was. As far as my commercially made wood stand for my 300 I would not have any safe means of shimming this really without adding more stress to one section of plywood than the others and would consider this to cause more problems than the bolt legs. I think it's great that everyone is looking out for his best interests but I really do think this is a great method that I have seen in use for years in alot worse situations.
  24. With the steel plates he's laying down he'll have no problem of spreading out the weight. The other thing to consider if one of these bolts did fail the stand would not come crashing down the 2" at the most it would be raised. The stand itself would stay almost completely level. After time there would be a problem but I'm sure Dustin is the type of guy that spends quite abit of time around his tank and would notice this.
  25. It's good to see everyones concern on here but I would have to agree with Dustin on this one. I have seen this design used extensively out here in industrial and oilfield use for alot bigger tanks and areas with vibration. Some of these stands would have to be 20+ years on them.
