  1. My giant PK spawn has one bigger male and I'm going to have take him out soon. He's only 6 weeks old or so but picking on everybody. Don't know what I"m going to do when they all need to be jarred though. May have to live on the balcony soon!! Oh the joys of betta breeding!!
  2. I've lost an angelfish and gourami that way too. Always feel bad when something preventable causes a fish's death. Sorry for your loss, especially when she was holding.
  3. I really like my yoyos but have never had queens. They love their brine shrimp pellets too so I'd make sure the wood shrimp is big enough not to get eaten. They do like to be in groups too.
  4. Yes, that's them. Not sure if the other eggs will hatch but they should hatch pretty soon if they're going to.
  5. Yes, should be good looking fish with those parents!! Now comes the fun part, feeding them when they're that little!!
  6. Give Dad a day or two. Usually, if he's got this far there's no rush. I try to keep it quiet around the tank so he doesn't eat the kids. Yes, they're little black things swimming around. What kind are they? Congrats on the spawn. Mine are well and I'll start feeding some BBS later this week.
  7. There's supposed to be mollies too and I've always wanted to go!!
  8. I'm a betta babe myself. Hopefully tonight we can get a date figured out for the auction. They're always so much fun and I end up with too much stuff. Werner and/or I will let you know tomorrow if there's a date set yet.
  9. Home Hardware in Olds has a nice fish section too.
  10. I brought the angelfish, betta, java fern and cherry shrimp. I'm at most of the meetings and am the "bratty" one!! Tall(okay 5'6"), thin(sort of), gorgeous(okay now, I'm really stretching it) with dark impossibly curly bobbed hair, that would be me. Hope to see you at the next one and come say "Hi".
  11. I usually bring plants and fish and try to make sure there's something interesting for the auction.
  12. I hate to say this but Mother Nature takes over. There may be some defect with the fry and that's why they didn't make it. We all would like to have our fish last forever, not get sick and raise 100% of our spawns but that doesn't happen. It's survival of the fittest out there. Get good quality fish, good environment suited for them and feed them good food and you increase your chances of better spawns. Keep trying!!
  13. I said I'd be working on my breeding attempts in the new year and I've got a spawn that are a couple of days old already. They're copper black dragon HMs and it looks to be a good spawn. After a break of 2 weeks, I'm back to hatching brine shrimp again. The giant PKs(6 weeks old) are well and growing fast. 2 of them are the size of my 4 month old fry. They look like they'll be cambodians so far. Bad news for me, is that I don't have an empty spawn tank until my spawns grow out!!(Hmmm, must look around and see where I can put another tank )Why did I get hooked on breeding fish?
  14. Make sure you're keeping him warm too. Helps bettas heal faster!!
  15. They aren't the easiest but keep trying. After my first spawn, I was walking on air!! Still love seeing the little guys and watching them grow!!!
  16. General Electric and I can get plenty of them at work. Please pm me and let me know how many and Daylight or CW. They're about 9 dollars a bulb.
  17. Try Blackmumba. She's got really nice fish and is close to Edmonton.
  18. Anything's possible and I got a great bubblenest out of a betta over 2 years old. I did start having more success when I used younger bettas though. My spawn successes have been more regular with Indian Almond Leaves, Spawn Aid, Blackwater Extract, floating plants and softened water were used. Hope this helps and good luck!!!
  19. I can get you F24 T12 bulbs in Daylight or Cool white. Please let me know if I can help you out. P.S. They'll be pretty cheap too!!
  20. Arrgh, I know the feeling. I have nice pair of purple SDs and he just doesn't get the hint. She bars up nicely and he watches football. Tried them twice already. Why did I have to fall for bettas?
  21. They might, but will they still work in that ancient fixture I have with that ballast & starter combination? How would I go about figuring that out? Check the length. F24 actually stands for a 24" bulb not 30". I'm at home now but can check if I have those when I'm at work tomorrow. Let me know!!
  22. So far so good, I've got little guys. Mom and Dad are spawn siblings(that's accepted practice in fancy betta breeding) and are copper black HM dragons. Hopefully they'll have good looking little ones!! Dad's job is almost done and I'll pull him soon.
  23. I was admiring a pitbull pleco the other day (they're particularily ugly) and are otos sensitive? my bro bought two on friday from BA's and they were dead by morning. I had bought one before and he died too...although there were suspicions of murder. do they like mature H20 or something? I really like them but, I'd preffer not to kill anymore Bristlenose don't get too big and are fairly hardy. They need some "green" stuff and like driftwood. I haven't lost any except really little guys who were shipped in. Look around here or some of the "used" sites as they can be expensive in the stores. If you're ever near Calgary, I sell them sometimes.
  24. Actually I work at a sign supply wholesaler and T12s are used in the lighting of signs. They are standard in the industry. We don't have 30" but you could try HD Supply Litemor or Commercial Lighting. If it was 48" or larger, I could definitely help you out!!!
  25. I have one like that. Have used a pencil to get it started but then used cooking spray to lube it up. It got into my tank but was gone in a day. My fish don't stick together any more and BN slide around on the glass alot, LOL!!
