  2. Welcome and what can I say? WOW!!!
  3. She was huge! I couldn't beleive the size either. The last one she had was just as big but she only had one...
  4. I'll try to get an updated pic tomorrow.
  5. OK, Its out! Got some advice on Monster. I have an old style "grabber" for my planted aquarium. I thought that I would try those first as they have a pretty hard grasp before removing him from the tank. So grabbed the front of the stinger and he backed up and it slid right out. I would say there was a little resistance but not much. There was a little bit of blood on it. After removing it he swam up the glass and I can see his mouth I think the end of the stinger was in there?? So as turkeyboy85 said maybe he was chewing on it??
  6. I was gone the thanksgiving weekend and I came home to one of my males beeing impaled by a shed stinger. Any advice? Will it fall out on its own?
  7. Welcome to the site. I have 4 motoros and 4 retics. OH and of course 8 new motoro pups!
  8. it would push back in to the hot water heater I would think, as there is typically no check valve on a home water system. As to drinking water, I suspect most people don't use the hot water for drinking, so it would only be used in that part of the system. It does push back into the hot water line. No need to have the hot water running. It has a little pump that pushed the waste water back into the hot water line. I have tried drinking some of the "hot" water but no real difference in taste but as BooUrns said I don't drink the hot water to often.
  9. It was really easy to install too!
  10. I have the Watts zero waste RO system from Costo. It works by putting the "waste" back into the hot water line under the sink. Works great.
  11. The little pup (which is a boy btw) is doing really well. Eating great!
  12. I googled it and thanks definity looks like Rotala sp. Nesaea crassicaulis and thanks for the idea. I'll post a give away ad on the classifieds and see if anyone wants it before I take it to the lfs.
  13. Might be hard getting to Medicine Hat though! lol
  14. Well I got way too much! I got this plant last year at the Calgary Auction and it has just taken over my 80 gallon! I was actually going to drop a bunch off at the lfs as I don't want it going into the garbage. If you want some its yours!
  15. Hello All, Can anyone help ID this plant? Thanks in advance.
  16. Today I was very surprised to see a pup swimming around the tank! I knew they were breeding but was waiting for her to get huge like last time she was pregnant. Last October she dropped 9 partially formed pups. I was away on vacation for two weeks and the friend looking after the tank never noticed that the heat had stopped working. The adults did ok as it was summer but the pups didn't make it. Last time she was huge and I could definitely see signs of pregnancy but this time I didn't really see any bulge. Just a nice big healthy looking pup swimming around the tank!! Sorry for the crappy pic but it's from my phone.
  17. Does anyone have experience breeding Retics that could part with some wisdom? I have two pairs and the large (and I use that term loosely) pair have been showing signs of breeding. She has bit marks on either side of the base of her tail and he has been chasing her around the tank. The "larger" female is just about 7 and the male is about the same size. Now I noticed that his claspers are looking mature and from reading some of the forums i know that males can mature around this size. I never thought she was big enough. My question is: Will a mature male start trying to breed with an immature female? I have another female Retic in there but maybe 5" and he is leaving her alone right now. Thoughts?
  18. So are you talking about the actual move your about the water quality etc? If you are talking about the move I have 8 rays and am by no means an expert but what works for me is using a laundry basket. When I moved my 20" female motoro to my 400 gallon I used a laundry basket and worked really well. What I did was had a BIG rubbermaid container (which was big enough for the laundry basket to fit in) with about 8" inches of water in it. Then I took the laundry tub and put it into the aquarium on it's side. Then I gently guided her unto the side of the laundry basket and then tip it right side up and lifted her out. Then I just placed the laundry basket in the rubbermaid and off I went. Then I slowly added water into the rubbermaid to make sure she was acclimated to the chemistry of the new tank. Once that was done I just lifted the laundry basket out and then placed it into the aquarium and tipped it on it's side so she could swim out. I have done this now quite a few times when moving my other motoros and when moving my retics but I used smaller launder basket with the retics. Scott is the real expert but I thought I would put my two cents in
  19. Hello All, I am getting a new tank from a friend and I need to know if anyone knows a moving company/ANYBODY that moves large aquariums? I live in the Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) region. The tank dimensions are 8' in length, by 32" high by 32" deep. Thanks in advance for any help/advice.
  20. ok I'll give that a try. Another question I am getting this "string" algae. That is the best way to describe it. Long green strings growing across the aquarium from plant to plant or plant to wood. Does this mean there is an imbalance or something I need to do?
  21. What about the type of bulb? I have 4 X 54watt T5 Fixture that has 2 10000k and 2 Actinic bulbs in it. I went in yesterday to get 2 bulbs to replace the Actinic bulbs. The problem is one guy said to buy the 10000K and 20 minutes later the other guy said, "No the 6000k is better because plants like the more orange/red light." Any suggestions on what intensity is best for the plants?
  22. I got mine from Praxair. They lease them for $50 per year (10 lb bottles). You can get a 5s, 10s, and 20s depending on what your stand will hold inside. Werner: How long does you 5lb bottle last? No Wait it was $25 a year per bottle. I got 2. One for backup in case it takes me a few days (or longer) to get into town for a fill.

  24. Ok I'll look at that one but not sure if I can afford that now. As you can see I have spent a few dollars getting ready for this tank and my budget is getting to the limit ok I'll keep that in mind. If you have a big snail problem could you throw in a couple clown loaches. This is what I used to do back 15-20 years ago when I had this problem in my old tanks. Or are they a conflict with a planted aquarium? As for start up I have a 130 gallon aquaponics tank setup and I am thinking that I will rinse out the solid particle filters in the new planted tank. Will that settle and help with initial fertilization?
