  1. have a 120 gal marine tank with a HOB filter and some underwater jets, would like to put a HOB skimmer on it is there any suggestions on what I could use any good names and sizes?
  2. I am in the process of building a 120 gal plywood FOWLR tank, can I put two snowflake eels in this tank for the life of the eels, with a lionfish and was thinking 2 triggers of some kind.
  3. Can you house 2 males or 2 females together or would they fight. I just dont want them to breed is all since I wouldnt have another tank to put the pups in.
  4. You could get away with a 8'L x 4'W x 2'H for a minimun for life for sure, but I think 30"H is better. My females vary alot in size so you may be able to go smaller but just in case they get big this is what I'd say. Just out of curiosity what would be a good tank size for one ray?
  5. If I was to build a plywood tank for a male and female motoro ray and Two fire eels what would the perfect dimensions be?
  6. How active are these kind of rays? And how fast do they grow? VERY interested.
  7. Hey firestorm my eel is about 1" from back to belly and a tad smaller side to side(I mabie am going abit small). If that gives you a good enough visual. Will he be in danger of Oscars or Dempseys. I am actually looking for tankmates for my Eel so if he will be in danger I will go with something else. Another option I was thinking of is some golden severums, Firemouths, Black Ghostknife and an african butterfly fish.
  8. How fast do Electric Blue Jack Dempsey's grow, and with the fire eel being a foot or so long is that big enough for him to be left alone? Also if I decided to go with just oscars how many can i put in a 115-120gal. tank with my fire eel, and perhaps a black ghost knife fish?
  9. Could I put a pair of Oscars in with a male Electric Blue Jack Dempsey along with a foot long fire eel in a 115 gal. tank with lots of rock work?
  10. Thanks for the advice, I will substitute the puffers for something else. Do you have any ideas ???
  11. Would Amazon puffers work I have read that they are the only good community puffer, I dont know mabie I misread ??? (I made a mistake on my list, I meant to type Amazon puffer, not Nile puffer.)
  12. Ok, so I have been doing ALOT of looking around trying to decide what to put into a 60L X 24H X 18W. 115 gal. tank. Would these be suitable? 3 Flag Cichlid 2 Firemouths 2 Nile Puffer 1 Fire Eel 1 Black Ghost Knifefish, OR 1 Centipede Knifefish, OR 1 Elegant Knifefish. Please let me know if this would be a good community tank, I will be putting PVC tunnels under the substrate for the Eel, a rock structure set-up, and some planted areas in the tank also.
  13. Yes I am still in the process of planing my tank, so I am up to other options. I did decide that I want to keep the eels and BGK. Do you have any other suggestions ??? What other peacefull cichlids did you keep?
  14. I have a 115gal. tank 60L X 24H X 18W. My main focus is to have 2 Fire eels, I was also thinking of having 1 Black Ghost Knifefish. And to complete the tank I was wondering if I could put in Peacock cichlids. I hear that these fish are not as aggressive as some other cichlids so my fire eels and ghost knife will be safe with them. How many peacock cichlids can I put in the tank, males vs. females ect. I will be putting in lots of rock work in the tank so there will be plenty of caves and hiding spots for the peacocks, eels, and ghostknife. I will also be putting in a maze of tunnels under the sand substrate for the eels as shelter. Some advise would be really helpfull as I have been trying to decide what to put in with the fire eels for some time now.
  15. Could you house a pair of fire eels with a Black Ghost Knifefish? Still trying to decide what middle level dewellers to get, any ideas for a 112 gal. tank 60"L X 24"H X 18"W ?????
  16. Thats fine about the Oscars and Clown Loaches my main focus about the tank is the Fire eels, do you know if the tank will fit the eels? As for the oscars and clown loaches I can figure something else to go with the eels (this is just my first idea), as long as the tank is big enough for the fire eels.
  17. I am giong to build a plywood tank, I want it to be 5Lx2Hx1.5W ft. approx. 112 gal. Is this tank big enough for 2 fire eels, 2 oscars, and a clown loach? I just moved into a smaller house so I would like to keep the tank as small as possible, without compromising the fish of course. I was planning on putting two HOB filters on it aswell, and some PVC under the sand substrate. Would this be suitable for a permanent tank??
  18. Dont have a ray yet or the fire eels this is just my next future tank idea was thinking of building another plywood tank, mabie this will prompt me to do it, perhaps a 180-200 gal. would work then?
  19. I have had ponds both here in saskatchewan and windsor, ontario and have used everything from little paddling pools to large in ground ponds and have never used any chemicals or filters. Add the water to your feature and let it sit still for a few days, it will start to look green like pea soup this is fine, after a few more days the water will clear right up and will be fine, then you will be able to add your fountain pump and fish if you so wish. If you have some floating plants to block out some of the sun aswell to provide shelter for your fish they should be just fine. If you dont have running water you will need fish, if you have running water you dont need fish. All I have done is clean the algae off the sides of my features every month or so and it has been a self-sustaining ecosystem. Once you get the hang of it it is one of the most rewarding and simple projects you can do, since you dont have to clean and add the chemicals that an aquarium requires. Oh ya with the sun and plants combined in your water feature you will not need a bubbler, expecially with a nice fountain pump.
  20. I have had a zig zag eel in a small 15 gal tank for 5 months or so, I got it when it was only 3 inches long, was going to put it in my larger tank when it gets abit bigger however it doesnt seem to be growing. I have been feeding it bloodworms every 2-3 days and can visually see that it is eating as I am hand feeding it.. My question is how long does it take one of these fishes to grow to adult size, can a zig zag's growth be stunted? I have only afew plants in the tank but there are some caves that I fashoned for it so it has plenty of shelter from its only other tank mate a small angel fish. Mabie I am being over anxious for it to grow into a larger size? But if there is anything I am doing that can be changed any advice would be greately appreciated. Also can a fire eels growth be stunted or would it just out grow the tank to the point that it would just keep trying to escape? I was thinking of putting two fire eels in with a ray in approx a 65 gal. tank (48L 18W 18H) would this be possible and could I throw in some other fish to occupy the rest of the tank.
  21. Saskatoon is 2 hrs away, Edmonton is about 4 hrs.
  22. I didnt think that you could keep eels with rays thought the eels would bury around and get stung?? Pretty cool though!
  23. I have a 120gal. 48" long 24"wide 24" tall plywood tank and I would like to get a Fire Eel have been reading up on them and have been getting the tank ready( burying pvc pipe under silica sand substrate some driftwood and a few densely planted areas with artificial plants I plan on attatching suction cups on the plants so they dont get "uprooted" this will be the Eels home no other inhabitants exept for mabie some freshwater shrimp or crayfish or something like that. I have some questions and hope someone will be able to answer would like to know with this setup how big the Eel is going to get and since they are nighttime fish would it be better to put moonlight lighting on the tank or just get some floating plants to help dim the lighting I want to try to make it so he/she will come out into the open as much as possible. What is the best way to keep earthworms, and get them ready to be fed to the Eel do you just soak them before hand??? And last what is the best place to get an Eel I live on the Alberta Sask border and I really dont know any reputable fish stores for these kind of fishes. Oh ya on my tank I have a plywood top with hinges on the back and latches on the front so I think all I have to do is put some screen where the HOB filters are and the water heaters. Do I need a protien skimmer with this tank size or would frequent water changes be enough and are these strictly freshwater fish or brackish I just want to make the perfect environment for the eel. Hopefully someone can answer some of my questions and im sure I will have more but for now any help would be apperciated THX.
  24. My piranha are 8 to 10 inches and I feed them every two days mostly I feed them freshly thawed smelt they are inexpensive and easy, occasionally some beef heart not to much though since beef is very fatty, I give them the odd treat of uncooked peeled shrimp this is really good for them and will produce a nice bright color in your piranha I also give them some cod fillets every so often, the thing that works best for me is to give them a varied diet this will give them different nutrients, I fed them just straight feeder fish for a long time risking the threat of introducing diesease and they were not growing and there color was getting darker so i would advice againsed that. This works good for me hopefully this helps good luck Piranha are magnificent fish and well worth the work.
  25. Does anybody know where I can get a Fahaka puffer been looking for abit now and cant find any wherever I go, also if anyone can tell me how long it would be ok for in a 75 gal. tank with sand substrate and quite abit of open swimming room, I know it needs a bigger tank just dont know how fast they reach 12 inches plus.
