  1. Thanks for clearing that up for me, Poohbah.
  2. Good catch on that one Poohbah. I do need a 6' fixture. Thanks anyway Byte. What I've noticed about the 6' fixtures is that although they use 39W tubes, or what ever, they tend to use two 3' tubes end to end instead of the 4' tubes. I haven't seen any with missing space on either end. But that's only what I've seen, who knows what's out there. Thanks again for the leads. Keep them coming. I have to wait until after X-Mas anyway so I 've got time to find the best deal.
  3. Hi all, simple question, I think. When measuring an aquarium, are you supposed to measure the inside or outside of the tank? In smaller tanks I realize it doesn't matter much because of the thin glass but in larger tanks you've got about 1/2" of glass and and that could make a difference. So which is the proper way to measure them?
  4. THANKS Poohbah. That's the one I'm looking at now. The one with 5x 39W T5s in it. 2.6WPG for $390, I'd say that's an awesome price. And T5's are cheaper to get around town then MH. Thanks again, Poohbah. I may be sounding like a broken record (or CD to you young folk ), but you people are the best here.
  5. Oh boy, you got me all excited about that website Poohbah, but when I looked up the 6' fixture, they don't ship that item to Canada. Dam it!! I can't win. Thanks for the link though Poohbah, that's exactly what I was looking for. $250US I could handle. If anyone knows of other deals like ths one that'll ship to Canada, let me know. Please. I guess knowing tank dimentions would help. It's 72"L X 19.5"W X 20.25"D Thanks again everyone for the answers, tips, comparisons, and help. As I've said before, you people are the best.
  6. OK so I should have looked before I asked but I did find out that grow lights do come in t12 sizes. Here's some more questions; On these websites they talk about lumens. When I want 1.5wpg, how would that convert to lumens/gallon? Or can you even do that? What the heck is a lumen anyway? They also talk about temperature. 5500K, 10000K, and so on. What's the best temperature for aquatic plants?
  7. You're right Devocole, I was looking around the internet at different plants and found that as long as I stay away from coloured plants with reds, I could get away with 1.5wpg. I guess I was hooked on 3wpg only because it worked so well in my 32G tank. 180W is a little more attainable. Thanks Drydock & Poohbah for the explanation on those light terms. That really straightened things out. Does anyone know if grow lights come in T12 tubes? My boss is throwing out a bunch of those two tube, 4' office light fixtures. Maybe I can put some lights in those and rig two together. I can't wait until Boom does the lighting on his project. I want to see how he's building it and what he's using. Thanks 2manytanks for the lead. My friend at work is always telling me to go check out Gold's and Riverfront, but I haven't made it down to either of them yet. Mostly Pisces and Big Al's. Now I may have to, just to price stuff out. Don't stop offering suggestions, tips, and leads folks. I really appreciate it a lot.
  8. Wow, those lights are !!EXPENSIVE!! I got the tank and stand second hand for just $200, I never thought I would be spending $1500+ on lighting. Yeah punman, I was thinking of having plants in my 120, my 32 looks so cool with real plant life. But with costs like that, maybe I'll reconsider. Well, maybe until I come across a good deal of money. Thanks boom for the offer but wouldn't a light like that end up cooking my fish? Kind of like what Poohbah mentioned. Unless of course I hang it a couple of feet from the top. But if I do that, it'll light up the whole room to blinding, wouldn't it? What I mean is our house is really small and turning on a light like that in our basement would be so bright we'd need sunglasses to go down there and check out the fish. I'm figuring that light is like the ones we have hanging in the shop from the ceiling. Am I right? Man, those things are bright!! Here's something else you all may like to answer for me, please. I was looking around the internet at different lights and people keep talking about T5, T8, and so on. What are all these light codes? Please remember I'm only 3mths into this hobby and I'm still learning things. So if I ask silly questions, laugh if you like, you wouldn't be the first. At least I'm making people smile and that very important to me. Thanks to all that have responded so far, and thanks for the links byte. The links opened my eyes to lighting and set me on a goal.
  9. I got myself a 120G fish tank and I was wondering about lighting for it. I understand that 3WPG is great lighting and I know it's true because that's the setup I have for my 32G and the plants are loving it. That being the case, I'd need 360W of lighting for my 120G, right? How the heck do you get that much wattage when lights from the LFS put out only 40W? Do I really have to find some way to setup 9 of these puppies???? How do you people with 200G, 300G, & 350G tanks light yours? Pics would be nice if you have them.

    Ahoy hoy

Hello and :welcome: to AA. You'll like it here. Everyone's so knowledgable and friendly. I'm fairly new to the hobby as well but I've learnt so much from everyone here.
  11. :welcome: to AA. I know you'll enjoy it here. Everyone's so very knowledgeable and helpful.
  12. Well, if I shared it with a bunch of other people, I probably wouldn't. I'm not the type that likes an audience. But that's just me.
  13. Good work Boom. That's exactly what I was hoping you were going to do. Keep up the good work and i look forward to the next steps. And thanks for your time in sharing this with us.
  14. So sumps are the way to go, eh. Now I really can't wait for Boom to start his post on how to set this kind of thing up.
  15. That is just so sweeeeeet. I love it!! Awesome job.
  16. I for sure would like to see it. The more detail the better too, IMO. :smokey:
  17. WOW! That is very nice. You sure made it sound easy to build. How many hours you figure you put into that and was it as easy as it sounds? Nice setup.
  18. Very cool. I can't wait to see the out come of this because I've thought about it but haven't built up the nerve yet. Step-by-step instructions like this might help. Hey Boom, I may be wrong as I don't work with wood but I don't think bd_fan mentioned the length of the screws. She did say they were 3" apart not 3" long. She called them 6X2 screws. Now what that means I haven't a clue? Maybe that they're 6" screws? Anyway, great job so far. Can't wait to see more.
  19. Hello and :welcome: to AA. Don't worry about the blabber, we all like to blabber about our fishes, well most of us do.
  20. Oooo, good question. I use a substrate because it looks good, IMO. I can't wait to hear what other's have to say about the pros and cons.
  21. That's so cool. I never knew about all that. Now for stupid question #1234; what do you mean buy F1, F2? Is that generations? You've got remember I'm only about a month into this hobby.
  22. INTER-SPECIES breeding too? OK, I really sound like I don't know poop, and to be honest, I don't. Don't laugh too hard but I though all that interspecies stuff was done genetically in a petri dish or something. Come on now, I said not to laugh too hard.
  23. They say you learn a new thing everyday, and here at AA it's the truth.
  24. Thanks BlackMumba. I was wondering where breeders got their other fish from to breed with but now it makes sense. If anyone know's about the birds that'd be great but not nesassary. The wife may just have to find a good bird forum to ask questions on. Took me a while to find AA, and let me tell you, I'm glad I did. You people are awesome.
