  1. 30 degrees is my current temp. I use an air stone and use the spray bar off my 1 of 2 filstar's to mix air with the water at the top of the tank. The problem I had with my africans was when the water was at 76 F that is what I am getting at.How do add CO2 with higher temp with out killing fish. I am sure you probably manage it with CO2 using compressed gas as it would be easier to control. Not sure if I could do it with yeast method as control is harder. How do you measure O2 content in the water? I know how to measure CO2.
  2. Well I managed to get my Discus back into shape. After dealing with Disus gut rot disease. But now I have some other issues with Algae. I checked Phosphates(<0.5 ppm) Nitrates(5 ppm) Ammonia(1.0ppm.) Did a water change, added cycle and put in some Zeolite. I hope to get a handle on this algae problem as it was growing at a super fast rate. Like I could see it growing by the hour. I do have java fern, onion bulbs and hygrophilia in the tank. Hygro is doing pretty good, onion bulb not bad but fern has no new growth. My lighting in my 90 gal works out to about 1.2 watts/gal.- temp at 30C. When I had africans in the tank the fern would grow like crazy with little or no fert. and no CO2. I tried CO2 with the yeast method but stopped when I came home one day and found my fish gasping for air. I would like to try CO2 again as I did see an improvement in my plants with it. My question is how can you control the amount of CO2 with yeast/sugar method. Also won't the reduction in ph cause a problem at water changes as adding new water will cuase fluctuations. I think my ph dropped to 6.5 when I last tried CO2. I have been reading that unless you have at least 3 watts/gal that CO2 is not worth the effort, but I think it is as long as I don't kill my fish. I would hope that with CO2 my plants would be able to out compete algae for nutients. Any thoughts? Thanks. At this time I am triing to figure out what is going on with my nitrogen cycle. Never had this problem even when my tank was over stocked. I have increased my water changes from once to twice a week. THis includes vacuuming. NOT SURE WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON NOW?
  3. Gave up with store bought meds. Trying to get perscription met(for food dosing) My fish are in salt bath with high temps. The more I read about these fish the more I want to flush rite back to where ever the hell they came from. I was prepared to do weekly water changes and feed properly. I don't want to remove sand from my tank and go bare bottom. To me that looks ugly. Lower the pH , get R?O unit. Don't need R/O unit and lower pH. I think the people that are keeping healthy discus are to embarrased to admit how much time and money they spend.I don't want to do daily water changes(although with these sick fish that's what I have been doing). I talked with alot of people in Calgary that claim to have no problems with discus and that they are not that diffuclt to keep. From what I have read so far might as well go salt water tank. Really what the hell is the trick with these fish. Do you have to change your life to keep healthy discus or what? Tried to get a vet in Calgary to examin fish fecies and get me on the right track with a cure. No luck only one I could find in the south end of town say he can't do any thing for me unles I bring my fish in. I thought part of keeping discus healthy was to not stress them. I am sure putting sick discus in a bag for a couple of hours is only going shorten their life. Even Pieces pet store can keep discus alive in a tank that dosn't look like it's seem a water change in a month. Can you tell I am getting frustrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!To many variables to try and control just make it seem not worth the effort.
  4. If it is more effect then LFS Met I will get the prescription kind. You need connections in this day and age. I even tried to get dimemet but found out it is not avialable in Canada.
  5. Would the Seachem brand of Met be any less effective then the perscription(for human) kind of met ?I am thinking that the LFS stuff is good for making money. I can get real perscription Met. My pharmasist is also looking at the availabilty of Dimemetronidazole. It is available in Canada with perscription. Anyone ever try this stuff? I have enough dosing info to either kill these fish or cure these fish. Any way at least my obsesing will be over. I actually called a vet and he told me the LFS stuff was vertually useless on larger fish like discus.Maybe neons? He also cautioned me on internet dosing info and said only he would be able to give me correct dosing info. But I have also played the vet game before. One "exotic animal" vet clinic told me they would not do anything for me unless I brought the fish in. I wish common sense would come in to play here. I told him how could I have faith in his ablities if he making stupid requests like that. Fecal sample of sick fish Ok. But bring in already stressed fish with internal parasites? Suck the cash out of ya game begins!!!!! Well I guess everyone got to make a buck.
  6. That is what I needed to hear. But I am a bit peranoid about Discus at this point becuse they all look healthy until you gey them home. I will try to fix these guys up and continue on with any healty survivors. No dead yet. If I can get them eating I might pull it off. Using metro and fluke tab soaked food. It will be a while before a bother with any more new discus. Thanks for all your help guys. I really don't have time to do everything by the Discus die hard hand book.
  7. At this point I would settle for two years. Well I have not been aging my water only because of keeping the temp up in the resovour. ( garbage can) Well at 3 out of the seven seem to be doing not to bad. As far as the pooh type. All I can say is that it is white about 1cm to 2 cm long most of the time. Some times it does look clear. I did treat with perasite clear ( by Jungle) and found several tape worms barely alive on the sand. How fast can that parasite spread from one fish to another? Honestly I can't believe none of them are dead yet. Paragon says it is a wide sectrum med. So hopfully that at least gets me to the point fish will eat. But it sure would be nice to now exactly what bug they had.Can I mix met with a little bit of fluke tab? I Figure at this piont I've got nothing to loose. (ha.. my neighbours just brought over thier Betta to fish sit while they are in Florida for the week) With my track record they better pack him along for the trip. Well I think tomorrow I will do my big water change in the paragon tank and see if fish perk up. The meds say 3 days should do the trick. If not wait 3 days and dose them again. I hate messing up water like that.
  8. Is Jemco a mail order place or a store. I might need some heavy duty Met like that. I can get my Doctor friend to write me a persciption for met. About 10 grams for $20. But that is still not enough to dose a 90 gal. At least I don't think so.
  9. I don't want to give up but this is nuts. My current situation is as follows: 15 gal super melow orange didn't eat in a week, noticed white poo, out of 90 gal into 15 gal dosing 600mg met day 3 (2-25%h2O /day) .... 32 gal has 1 red turquois and 2 blue turquois.. ( dosed with Paragon as per instructions on day4 )Red turq eats met soaked blood worms only about a week now poo almost looking good all the time, dorsal fin ragged on edges, colour poor, eyes cloudy but not so withdrawn anymore. Blue turqs one seems to eat blood worms of the bottom after they sit their for a while. Other guy on major hunger strike, have not seem him eat in 2 weeks. Both dark and freak out easy. Where eating pellets and happy when I got them about a month ago. 90 gal has 3 fish; 1 blue snake skin, 1 red turq, 1 super melow orange. Snake skin started to shy up then I noticed white poo starting. Started feed met soaked food again(while he's still eating) Plan to feed met soaked food again to fish in 90 for another 2 weeks. Vacuum bottom as often as possiable to prevent spreading bug to the 2 good fish. Water temp in 90 gal 86 F , 32 gal 88F, 15 gal 88F, water ph and hardness = Calgary tap water, no Amonia or nitrite, Nitrate 5ppm to 0. What else can I say. Only fish eating pellets and red wiglers are the 3 in the 90 gal. Tank mates are a pleco and 2 rams. They must be pickled with the met by now. I miss my family I want to relax and enjoy my fish like I used to with my African's which I traded for these &*^%*^ fish. I think I just have to wait things out. What do I do to kill the parasite in the tank to keep the fish from picking it up again? More damn meds. I thought a bleech but I don't really want to cycle tank again. That's the scoop so far. Problem started about 3 weeks ago. I messed up and did not quarentin properly. Like I said I would start all over again if I knew a way I could avoid this hastle. If I get rid of these fish I don't know what I will get for fish. Always wanted Discus ever since I was a kid, but I had no $ then. Now I got kids and NO $. Thanks for the encouragement.
  10. Had it with my Discus. I live in Airdrie, If you want them you can have them becuase I will be sending them to the Bow river via the tiolet soon. To fed up to disuss the details but they are sick with spiro and very nervious. I have 7 in total I think only two are ok. tried treating with all kinds of stuff. Just e-mail me.
  11. I have been experimenting with different lighting lamp combos on my 90 gal. I have plants in the tank which seem to be doing quite well. I have the "All-glass Aquarium" fixtures (a two lamp and one lamp) I used the lamps which came with the fixture for a while. Then I bought a wide specturm lamp form Totem. Too red. Then I bought a "power glow" $28 , not as bright as the lamps that origianlly came with the fixtures but my plants seemed to like it. Now I bought a 6500K, T8 lamp full spectrum, for $8 bucks. Kind of has a blue/green glow. I here this is the best for plants. But without going out and spending big bucks on hiag output lighting system. What would be the best combination to show off colour of fish and keep the plants happy? I have decided not to buy any more lamps from pet stores as I can get good lamps for almost 1/3 the cost of what the LPS want. Any advice? (note:Bright lights, a lighting store in Calgary is supposed to be able to get any lighting you need. Thats where I got the $8 lamp)
