  1. Hey Guys, Wasnt to sure where else to turn on this one. I picked up a Laguna 1800 16W UV sterilizer and figured i could hook it in line with my fluval 304. Problem is the smallest size the UV takes is 3/4 tubing where as the Fluval is 5/8. Any suggestions?
  2. I think you may be looking for a wider unit, but I would recommend the sundial T-5's. I loved how it only had one cord, built in timers, and moonlights. Unfortunately the hood i built was to short to fit the unit in so I had to buy the nova extreme series which is nice and slim but has three cords. I heard that the tek lighting does not have fans for cooling as apparently they don't need them (don't quote me on that). But that would sure be nice as I am not a fan of listening to the fans! Good luck
  3. Hey Guys, Wondering if you could help me out. I currently have a cowry and want to introduce some anemones and soft corals but heard that the cowry can nip at these. It has yet to eat any of the smaller anemones that are with my live rock but I have seen him take a go at a blue starfish. Generally if i toss him seaweed he keeps to himself. So really just hoping to hear your guys' thoughts
  4. I love the way it looks NOW! I am not sure if Sil sand is play sand, perhaps sand blasting??? Does anyone know what it's intended purpose is? You definately don't want to put this in your reef. Sand made of Calcium Bicarbonate is what you shoud be looking at to add into your reef. It serves it purpose well in buffering, but I removed my sand bed from my reef after a couple years. I found that it was trapping too much detritus, more harm than good IMO. O yeah that's what it's called! That's what I have but sometimes you just never know if there is a diffence. Lol you could totally call regular sand something at a fish store and charge triple. But yeah, had my doubts for the reef. Thanks
  5. Wow, I had no idea you could use play sand. Surely not for a reef tank....right? I thought the sand in my tank acted as a PH buffer. Well I guess you learn something everyday and im feeling like a chump after spending so much on it. lol
  6. Hey Scott if you are new to saltwater I would suggest reading a book called the "Natural Reef" by Tullock (at least thats what I think its called). It's great help to get you up and going. You can get it at the library, and I know in that book he really talks about nano reefs. Again as was mentioned before lighting is going to be key to determine if the corals will grow. What about snails? cheers!
  7. Happy New Year! My name is Dan. I live here in Edmonton. I have had fish almost my whole life, and have been invovled in saltwater now for about 7 years. I think the most tanks I ever had was three (mainly due a catfish that ate everything), but now only run my 55 gallon salwater tank. I have had great success for many years with them until this summer I lost the majority of the fish in there and couldnt figure out why. I finally realized I had been using a expired dechlorinator and now things seem to be running smoothly again and I'm excited as I have a clean slate to work with. Anyways, glad this place exists! Dan
