  1. Thanks everyone for all of the warm welcomes, it is great to be part of a group of local fishaholics. That was a very funny observation Gnaw, me joining AA, never would have thought of that connection until you mentioned it, thanks for the chuckle, now where's my rum? I will try to post a couple of pictures of my tank in the photo section this weekend if I get the chance. Cheers All
  2. Thats a beautiful tank you have there with some very very nice discus. Did you buy those fish locally or from a breeder?
  3. I have 3 Sae & 2 bushynose plecs in my 100g heavily planted discus tank. Neither of these guys eat any of my plants which include moss, marimo balls and about 7 varieties of stem plants, the plecos don't go near the plants at all only onto the glass and on the wood in my tank. The sae constantly forage algae off the plants, look like their eating the plants but really are not. True Sae look very much like false Sae and flying foxes so be sure to research them well so you know how to tell the difference. Another great fish for algae control is the otocinclus they will clean certain algae off of all things in the tank, but you must watch them as some may go after the slimecoat on certain fish such as discus if their is not enough algae to eat.
  4. HI Catshanon: I am a finish carpenter and what you have drawn out is definately overkill. Go with the plywood and not particleboard, it is way more rigid and wont swell up if it gets wet like particleboard will. 4x4's are not necessary 2x4 is more then enough needed. Doing the horizontal 2x4 is a good idea but again not necessary, the vertical 2x4 are more then plenty enough to hold the 6-7 hundred pound weight with a plywood top. Since your stand is only 36" long and you have drawn 3 openings - you"ll have less then 12" between each opening after adding the 2x4's and you will be more then fine. Adding the plywood to the bottom is a good idea as someone else stated in case you do need to shim the stand to make it level, just be sure to place the shims so they are under the 2x4's you add and your good to go.

    Hello

Hello from Calgary Alberta, Just wanted to say HI as I just joined this forum. I am mostly into planted tanks and discus fish. My current setup is a 100 gallon discus tank. I run a medium light - CO2 injected, fully planted discus tank. Current stock includes 7 sub adult discus fish along with 21 rummynose tetras, 12 cardinals, 2 bolivian rams, 3 siamese algae eaters & 2 bushynose pleco's I mostly hang out on the simply discus website and learned of this site from there. Wanted to join in here so I could chat with some of the local fishnuts. I will be going by the user name of captain morgan after my favorite drink of spiced rum. Cheers
  6. You should check out Catalina Lighting this is where I ordered my light from- bought a 48" T5 high output with 4 bulbs also had them install their dimmable moonlights they also give you your choice of bulbs, I went with 2 6700k & 2 10000k because I wanted to grow plants. This light kit is awesome, blows away my hagen glo system. They shipped to my door for $250 Canadian dollars. I searched locally for something comparable at first and would have had to spend around $800 at the local fishstores to find something equal without dimmable moonlights. We Canadians are getting hosed!
