  1. Just rec'd a beautiful 90 from Ted for my birthday and I want to rearrange some existing fish into it but I am concerned about crossbreeding ('cause I know I'll never be able to catch them all in there). Will Red Empress crossbreed with peacocks? I have 2M5F Red Empress who have already breed for me and 10 various sizes 3M4F3unknown Ruby Red Albino peacocks who have not. I'm hoping that a bigger tank size, some feeding up, and a little less competition from the other tankmates in the 65 will do the Albinos good and perhaps prompt them to breed. The biggest pair are 4 inch male and 3 inch female. If I can't mix these two, what will go with either the Red Empress or the Albinos? Thanks Theresa
  2. Hello All We just picked up a Hagan Glo T5 HO fixture and are having serious problems getting the bulbs to turn into locked position. We can get one end at a time to turn, so that part of the fixture is working but when the bulb is in place at both ends, they won't budge. Does anyone have any experience with these? Thanks Ted and Theresa
  3. He is beautiful. I hope you breed him! Theresa
  4. I know a few people were looking for ready-made caves. Pj's Pets on the Calgary Trail has a bin near their tanks that is stacked with aquarium decorations that look like fake rocks. They vary in size but all of them are $1 each. They look like quartz and are white Some have black or gray or brown streaks. They are made of some kind of resin and are hollow with an open bottom and 2 small holes on the top to let air escape. We are going to try to cut entrance holes near the bottom to make them into caves but you could also just lay them on their sides. We threw a couple (undrilled) into a tank combined with natural rocks and the fish are fine. We were able to stack a few real pieces of quartz on top, these are more or less flat. Wouldn't trust them with too much weight but if we can drill them, they'll look just fine (especially once there is a blush of algae on the sides to get rid of the new "whiteness"). Just thought I would let people know before they are all gone. Theresa
  5. Bow Valley Aquarium in Calgary has it. Ted
  6. Welcome back! We just started back at fish keeping after a 20 year layoff to raise out family too. Things have sure changed, many fish that you have never seen before are being bred by your "new friends", that you are sure to meet on the forum. We now have far too many tanks going. If you are looking for mostly Africans drop "fairdeal" a note here on the forum, he has quality stock and also in Calgary. But beware our family was there a few times now,.......that's why we have the tanks springing up in every room in the house. Take Care, and enjoy

    lava rock

Thanks everyone - you have confirmed my suspicions. I will keep the lava rock and use it in a future planted tank with small fish. Theresa
  8. Thanks for the information, we cant seem to find the site "t&taquatica", but will have a look at Natures Corner. Ted
  9. We would like to get 2 small schools (4 -5 fish in each) of 2 different type of smallish Corys. Any breeders in the Edmonton area? Thanks Theresa and Allie

    lava rock

Hello all We picked up some lava rock that has interesting holes in it, intending to use it with mixed africans (2 - 5 ") as caves and hiding spaces in the 65. It has some very sharp edges and surfaces. Is it still alright to use? It would be impossible to remove all the sharp edges as some of the faces of the rocks themselves are just full of "bubbles" of which each edge is sharp. Our 2 biggest guys are now flashing against the rocks as they are trying to play king of the tank. Thanks Theresa

    Back in the hobby

We got some beauties from Harold and Allie picked up a total of 9 Bettas (6 girls and 3 boys) between Gold's, Riverfront and Chantel (GillsnFins???, Black Mumba). It was nice meeting you Catherine. It is nice to put a face to the name! Theresa
  12. Thanks for all the information folks, It looks like we will try a canister filter, and have been looking at the Eheim's, both the 2215 and 2217 classics. The 2217 has 50% more media than the 2215, and has a greater flow rate, but would it be too much? We just got back from the "Big" store in Edmonton, I swear that the cost went up from last weekend, but I couldn't find the gent I talked to last week. Are they are the only Eheim dealers in town? I will check the net, but would rather support a local shop. If you have any opinions good or bad about the Eheim's or their various models (Ecco, Classic, Pro) we would appreciate it. I am starting to dream about aquarium filters at night, I gotta get something soon, so I can get back to my old dreams. Ted
  13. Thankks for the reply, We were not planning on adding CO2, should we be if using a HOB?
  14. Hello, I'm sure this must have been asked before, but, We are looking for some advice on a filter for a 65 gallon aquarium. The tank will be used for Cichlids and be planted, should we go with a HOB or a Canister, and which brands would you reccommend? HOB's are less expensive but it looks like canisters do a better job of filtration and would provide better bio filtration system. How about leaks, cleaning intervals, performance, etc? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Ted
  15. Hello, My wife Terry and I had both kept fish when we were growing up, but soon after we paired off and the fry (kids) were born, priorities changed, the fish were given away, tanks emptied and sold.......20 years later. Terry is a Kindergarten teacher and was looking to set up a tank in her classroom at school. So off we went to the local shops looking for the perfect fish. Questions from the kids about salt vs freshwater, who gets along with who, and finally "WHY DON'T WE HAVE A TANK". Terry said OK, and my life was over. We went to every store in Edmonton looking at fish tanks and equipment, things had really changed in that time. There were fish we had only read about before in the aquariums in the stores, equipment of all sorts, not like the Ol' Woodward's store at all. Our daughter was looking up info on the net and came across the ACE webpage, and there was a meeting the next night, off we went. We were made welcome by a great bunch of folks, watched an interesting video and listened to the discussion, we joined up. We were asked if we would be attending the auction that Sunday, my wife said "you bet", ............the skies darkened. There were all kinds of equipment, tanks, fish, there one of the folks from the meeting brought some fish we had bought a few days before. We bid on some more tanks, fish and plants, we won our fair share. Thanks to Rudy for advice on plants that we had never had before. I backed the truck up to the door to load up our haul, there were tanks in the back, kids had smaller tanks on their laps, bags of plants were tucked into any available space, it looked like the Clampets on the move. We now have enough water in tanks to float a small boat and are waiting for things settle down trying the fishless method of tank cycling. Thanks to those that answered our questions and a thankyou to Tanker for helping us out with our account on the forum, it’s a great resource. Take Care, Ted and Terry Bon Accord
