  1. Post some pics of your ebjd. I am hoping to trade some Blue gene JD with other BGJD...I know of one other person in b.c. Jonah Here is a photo of my EBJD, he is only 3.5 inches right now.
  2. Hey that is exciting, I have a EBJD also and I am raising mine up with a regular female. They are only 3 inches right now. You are an inspiration! Save me some fry as well!
  3. Well, thanks for all the imput...sounds like I am on the right track. I put lots of media and sponge squeezings in the new tank and filter and I will start adding a few fish very slowly...over a period of several days. I think all should be fine.
  4. Yes, I have put media from a well established filter into my new tank's filter today, but without a fish in there to keep the "cycle" going, the bacteria will die. Or am I wrong about that?
  5. Hi all ya knowledgable fish fanciers, just wondering what fish I should cycle my tank with. I have these to choose from: any opinions on which ones are the hardiest to preform the task at hand 1, 7" oscar 3, 4" sunset cichlids 3, 1.5" convicts 2, 4" five bar cichlids 1, 16" clown knife fish 3, 4" red zebras 2, 6" blue mbunas 1, 5" venustus 2, 12" common plecos 2, 3" red devils 2, 5" jack dempseys I have other fish also but I don't think they should even be in the running for a cycle. I know convicts are an obvious choice, but three little fish in a 160 G tank I don't think would do the job.
  6. It was quite a job, but I got it done in about three and a half hours. Drained water into several containers to put the fish in while I scooped gravel, and unhooked all the pumps, filters and heaters. Then we moved the tank and stand using a small wagon to wheel the tank into the next room (the wooden stand we could carry). Then quickly put as much of the orignal water as I could back in the tank, returned the fish...got one filter running and took a short breather before I added fresh water and connected the heater, air pumps and other filter. 3.5 hours from start to finish...I could never have done it if my neice and nephew were not here to look after my 2.5 yr old and my 1.5 yr old children... could you imagine!!! My youngest...my little girl can't help herself when she sees water. We live on a farm and if I turn my back for a second she climbs into the water trough for the mini horses. Who needs a swimming pool? When she sees a bucket of fish on the floor, she has to try to pet them all (and taste the water). Not to mention the joy to be had with a bucket or two of lovely fish tank gravel...what a mess! Anyway, this time I had no children in the house and the operation went smoothly...It has been 7 hours since the move was completed and all the fish are active and appear to be ok.
  7. What sort of glass or acyrlic is needed to support that kind of pressure. That thing was absolutely massive! I looked 40 feet up, and or 50 feet long. One solid piece of glass! Wow!

:welcome: Don't know anything about salt water...but I know you will find lots of friendly help here.
  9. Thanks again for all your help and advice. I am feeling better by the hour. These are my first Discus and I don't want to mess it up.
  10. Thank you Discuslova and Iskabod for your replies. I will try not to worry. I will head to my LFS tomorrow and see if they carry frozen blood worms and the garlic stuff. I live in a small town and they are VERY resticted on what they carry. But I will be going to Calgary on Tuesday so I can also pick up what I need then. Thanks again.
  11. Hi, I just got two new discus about 4 inches, they are in my quarentine tank. I was told by the fellow i bought them from that he only fed them blood worms. I would like to get them to eat pellets and other dry commerical discus food. I have had them three days and I still haven't seen them eat anything. I offer food three times a day, and do a water change daily to suck out all the uneaten food. I have been offering small floating pellets, sinking pellets, flakes, some sort of color enhancing crumbles and dried blood worms. Still haven't seen them eat. Are they going to die on me?
  12. Hi, I got myself five EBJD at 1.5 to 2 inches in length. Two died unexpectedly and the third got picked on when I wasn't aware my Red jewels has spawned...I evenually lost him also. I do still have one, he is nearly 4 inches big now and doing well. He is in a community 150 gallon tank. If i was to do it again, I would keep them in a seperate tank. They are too expensive to loose to fighting etc...
  13. Ok, I feel stupid...I'll look again. Sorry to be a bother.
  14. I am fairly new here and I tried to read all the do's and don't of this site...I don't want to offend anyone. But why did my tank for sale ad get removed?
  15. Thanks for the comments guys, it is fun the share my tanks with others. I live out in the middle of nowhere and although I can show my tanks to my friends (yes I have friends, don't laugh) but none of them really appreciate the fish as much as I do or my AA collegues do.
  16. I got him off a fellow in Calgary who was down sizing his tank. I never asked him where he got it orginally, but I keep in touch with the fellow and could ask him.
  17. Just wanted to share with you some of my pretties!
  18. I bought a tank and it came with this delux water testing kit...tests everything from amonia to iron levels, to calcium levels ect...but it is expired. Does that matter? Will the readings be incorrect? Should I just throw it out?
  19. What salt amount are you adding to keep your Dat happy. How my teaspoons per gallon? I just got myself a NG Dat. 6 inches. Just wondering what will keep him the happiest.
  20. Thanks for the ideas...keep going... The Krylon spray sounds do-able but how about brush on paint for detailed work?
  21. Is there such a thing that can be bought by myself to touch up and repaint plastic or resin aquarium orniments? Would need to be lead free and stand up to water (obviously). Any suggestions please? Also, want to pick everybodies brains on safe material to sculpt my own orniments...air drying ploymer clay? I am currently making my own orniments with pottery clay, that is fired in a kiln and then glazed with lead free, food safe colors and fired a second time. That is working well, however, I am interested in other materials.
  22. Well thanks everyone for clearing up the mystery...I am surprised that Gold' mislabelled it...they are usually so good about that. Anyway...I'll do my research on the fish and see if indeed he is compatable with my other tank...if not...he may go on the market.
  23. Thanks for your help so far...I hope this photos helps. I went back to Golds today and found a fish that looks like the one I bought but they have it labelled C. Argentea. So go figure.
  24. I bought a young fish from Golds and was told it was an Herichthys Argentea...I Googled some photos of the fish...but I can't find any profiles on it. There is Veiga Argentea...but I am not convinced it is the same fish. Can anyone offer me any information on this fish. I am mostly interested in its compatability with my other cichlids and gouramis. My fish is only about three inches and it looks like it is being aggressive already...might need to move it into my 150 gallon tank that's holding larger cichlids.
  25. I have purchased a green severum and three tourquoise severums from different stores and I am wondering if they are in fact the same thing. I have read on some sights they used the green and tourqoise interchangably and I found another site that notes a distictive difference. Is there a difference and how does one know if one has a green or a tourqoise severum.
