  1. that's exciting. where did you get him? Your turn to post photos. Highjack my thread... I don't mind.
  2. that knife is gets long with everybody ( as long as it doesn't fit into his mouth ). The gouramies are about 12 to 15 inches. The knife fish is about 19 inches.
  3. Nice, that last photo is awesome!
  4. I got myself a little pocket camera for Christmas and for just a litte machine, I am impressed with what it does. I tried photos with several different ISO's and shutter speeds. If any of you pro photographers out there have any advice for me I would love to hear it.
  5. Jonah, are you looking at selling any of your BGJD's. I am still hoping to breed some BG's. no luck yet. But I would buy some of your if you decide to sell. Irene
  6. I think this guy is a bit strange, I have never found one on the net that looks like him/her. It is solid black from head to tip of tail with the common JD green/blue markings. But is it a male or female. Can anyone tell me?
  7. He is full grown at 5 inches, and the boss of my tank. Very aggressive but doesn't inflict injury thank goodness. The best I can determin is he is a male, melanochromis Interuptus. Any help please.
  8. No 20 gallon tank to help you out...but sure would take that bad boy and his group off your hands :hey:
  9. Is that convict what they call a pink convict? I've not seen one quite like that before. Let me know if you get fry...might want some
  10. I'm curious. Have you found a source for Olive Nerites? The only ones I've seen (I don't get to Calgary or Edmonton often) have been Zebra Nerite (Vittina coromandeliana aka Striped or tiger nerite) and Onion Nerite (Vittina semiconica aka orange track snail) with the occasional Vittina turreta, I believe. Olive Nerites are properly named Neritina reclivata but correctly,Vittina usnea. I'm always on the look out for different Nerites. I have been communicating with Arizona Aquatic Gardens. They have proved VERY helpful with many things...they answer by emailed questions in deapth and my phone converstions with them are helpful and considerate. I plan on ordering from them as they guarantee live delivery even to Canada. If you are interested perhaps we can share an order and share shipping. Here is the link to the olive snails they have. https://www.azgardens.com/p-222-snail-algae...rite-snail.aspx
  11. I am thinking of getting a bunch of Olive Nerite Snails, they said they won't reproduce in freshwater tanks. So that is good as I don't want my tank over-run with them. However, I have heard that snails in general make your tank smelly...especilly when they die and you don't know where they are to fish them out. Will anyone offer me their suggestions on other species I might consider...pros and cons? Input please.
  12. "messing with me" I thought so. I'll try talking to them again.
  13. That was kind-a what I thought. But the guy(manager) I talked to says he knows someone in town who had got one to sell the betas he raises. I will phone this person and see what he says.
  14. I contacted a small store in Three Hills to see if they wanted to buy a few of my nicaragua cichlids and they told me I needed a "Fish Trading License". Who governs this? Who do I contact to get one? The only fish license I could find was for raising and selling trout and the like...not aquarium fish. Any help please.
  15. The tank is my 150 gallon (see signature below, I just updated it). The salinity I currently have the tank at is one teaspoon of salt per gallon (5 ml of salt per gallon). I don't have one of the salinity readers so I can't give you another number. I have the tank at 77 degrees. I am looking for a small, brightly colored fish (prefering a schooling fish) to occupy the lava rocks and many fake plants I have in there. How about killies or platys? Mollies just don't offer the color I am hoping for. The only possibly aggressive fish I have in there are the convicts. My parrots are easy going and the severums I never see bothering anyone. The frontosa just minds his own business.
  16. I did some research and found out that tetras in general do not tolerate salt long term. So I will no longer be considering them for my brachish community tank.
  17. I have a community tank that I have climatized to a near brackish salinity level. Thinking about adding some tetras, if I acclimatized them slowly, will they be fine in this salty tank? Any advice please.
  18. I am not a fan, I will have to say. It looks like you bred a parrot with a texas and got some type of texas hybrid... :bang1: filthy hybrids -roll- Hybrid or not, it is a great looking fish, I don't care what others say/think.
  19. do the silvers grow faster than the other colors of arrowanas?
  20. I was visiting Calgary last weekend and we went to the Smitty's restaurant in the Sunridge mall parking lot (on the North west corner). They have a tank in the middle of the room with the largest arrowana (I believe it is a silver) I have ever seen. If ever anyone is thinking of getting an arro...I suggest going to see this moster...just to get an idea of really how big they can actually get! It was impressive!
  21. do you want me to email you the photo? I was not sure if the forum down sized the resolution or not. I'll need your email address...pm me if you like.
  22. Interesting, you reminded me about something I read on that subject also. This may not be an artificial hormone related problem, but might be a naturally occuring hormone problem, created by other fish in the same tank. I have many fish in there, at various stages of growth. Who knows what hormones any given fish is sending off into the water. Facinating. See...this is why we bounce ideas off each other. Thanks! I'll see if i can find another compatable tank for the little gal. It might make a difference.
  23. Wow, thanks for all your information! And so fast too..you guys needs a life! Ha ha (like me). Well, I will stop jumping to conclusions, I guess justing reading about the hormones made me have my doubts. But two fish is hardly a solid ground on which to jump to conclusions. So, perhaps I will try again with another pair. Stress caused by un-usual collection in the tank...good point there. Never really considered that. Anymore info. is still welcome!
