  1. I just installed my first LED lights in my 55g tank. The tank is a lowtech set-up with anubis, java ferns, and crypts. The LEDs seem brighter than my previous 55w PC lighting but after only 2 days I can't comment on how well the plants take to them. I ended up going with the ecoxotic panorama LEDs. (http://www.ecoxotic.com/catalog/product/view/id/147/s/panorama-pro-module/category/17/) I only bought 1 to start with because i was unsure if it would be enough to light the entire tank but I'm going to need 1 more.
  2. You have the urge to breed when cold water is poured on you? :eh: Colder WCs always work to get my fish in the mood too.
  3. Nice looking tank. The picture with the fog in the background is aweseome.
  4. The bulb is around 5000k (a redish color) which is a better range for plants and growth. It is usually meant to be coupled with a 6700k or 10000k bulb so that you have a broader range of the spectrum for your plants. However unless your are doing a high tech planted tank you are more than okay with a 6700k or a 10000k bulb.
  5. Nice looking tanks. What is the rule of thirds you refer to?
  6. I use a pipe cleaning brush from Canadian Tire or home depot and attached some fishing line to it so that I can pull it through the input and output tubes. The brushes come in many sizes and can be even used to clean your entire canister lines with the string/fishing line.
  7. I'm not sure of compatability issues as i have never had a SW set-up but being that your tank is larger you could get some of the larger tangs or angels. From what I've read, it sounds like what you need to do is find that 1 fish that you really want as your "center piece" and then add fish that are compatable and compliment them.
  8. Really depends on how you want the tank to turn out. Are you going to be turning this into a reef tank or just a FOWLR tank? A large open tank with lots of swimming room or lots of rock and caves?
  9. I run with Jager submersible heaters and the $5 hang on the tank thermometers. The heaters always run constant temperature and i just use the thermometers to balance them to the desired temp when the dials are slightly out.
  10. Nice video. I actually ended up watching all the videos you have posted. Quite a collection!
  11. All of my tanks usually only get water changes every 1-2 months when i'm home from university. Longest has probably been 6-8 months with only top-ups. My filters only get cleaned once a year too. All of my tanks are planted though so i'm never really concerned about it. Its more trimming the plants and cleaning the glass when i back home more than worrying about water changes. All the fish still spawn regularly (although they still like to snack on their young and i haven't seen 1 full grow up yet).
  12. eheim is a great powerhouse canister filter and what i would recommend. You can get the 2226 and that will take care of any amount of fish that she'll put in the tank. Its easy to clean and service too and you can stuff alot of media into it.
  13. Its pretty cool to see what people can do with a planted layout. I like some of the layouts but others i find are just too over the top trying to create some non-aquatic location in a layout.
  14. To be honest they were one of the first fish that i ever kept and couldn't tell you. The owner of the store picked them out for me. As far as i know the males will have a long elongated anal fin and a slightly redder belly but i wouldn't count on that.
  15. From my experience i was told that the best ratio is 1 male to 2-3 females. The male I had really colored up nicely when my group matured too.
