  1. thanks so much, i will head down there tomorrow after work,& then head off to big als or pisces to get those plants too, one question though, the plant store u talk about is that the hydrpontics place beside the meat store & a pub? hopefully it is because thats where i^m heading. & again thanks a lot,
  2. thanks everyone, the test kits haven^t expired yet, but r old, i get the same readings as big al^s, no i^m not dosing any phosphates or potassium, was hoping that the 3 fertilizers would be adding enough. hate adding more chemicals, added a bunch of autocichlids? & a few flying foxes, hoping that those little guys might eat it up for me.
  3. 55 gallon haven^t tried the excel yet, use comprehensive, trace & iron flourish the algae only showed up when i tried the home made co2, & did it ever bloom, never had a problem with algae before, & only the long haired grey algae still don^t have any problems with the green algae i replaced one t-8 cannister with the compact set up
  4. light-3-4 wpg 12 hours one set of compacts with 6700 k & a double t-8 new in sept 2 inches of latterite under the substrate when i started, 5-7 years ago, so don^t know if any is left at all. liquid flourish, iron, comprehensive, & trace, dose daily i^ve gott an assortment of all , fast , slow growing, hi & lo light plants, 2-2litre pop bottles with a home made receipt of sugar, yeast, that i connected to the out take on 2 of the filters to disperse the bubbles. latterite under medium sized gravel, but i^ve never replaced the latterite i^ve got 3 filters running, 304 fluval, over the side aqua-clear, & a 2in 1 power head, so i would say hirate of flow no i got backing on it, & no direct sun, well maybe in the summer for about 2 hours on a quarter of the tank,
  5. That's not normal. You should have zero ammonia and nitrites in an established tank. Have you just set it up recently? iVe always had that amount of ammonia & nitrites since i started it up, for about 7-10 years now, i feed every other day, they alwats eat it all, do weekly water changes, about 35% , always had that readings didn^t know i wasn^t supposed to have nill.
  6. hi everyone, i^ve got a major long hair algae problem that won^t go away. tried several different remedies, stopped fertilizing, turned off the lights, added phosguard in cannister filter, trimed any leaves that have the algae on them, but all i have now is charlie brown christmas tree looking plants, there still growing & sprouting new leaves but cann^t get rid of the algae, don^t have any of the green algae on the sides of my tank just the long hair algae on the plants & ornaments, my water perameters r all within normal readings, or normal for the fish, i used a diy co2 setup several weeks ago but shut it off after about 4 days & thats when i first started noticing the algae, its a 55 gasllon with about 12-15 fish, small rainbows & several sharks, several loaches, medium planted, my water perameters r, ammonia-.1-3 nitrate- 10 ppm, nitrite-second lowest reading on the chart, i use the liquid testing, cann^t think of anything else to try except pull out all my plants & start all over again, which i don^t want to do, so if any one can give me any advice much appreciated, except the part about don^t use the diy co2 thing again, :well:
  7. werner the guru is absolutely right, i tried the diy system & had nothin but problems, not worth the headache, couldn^t control the flow very good, had an algae bloom, fish starving for oxygen, my advice go for the pressurized system right off & u won^t be turned off by it, & ur plants will love u for it. i^ve already noticed a difference the system makes. & plus i put another set of compact lights on my tank too.
  8. thanks qattarra, half of the purigenn was snow white, i cann6t remeber if i had recharged it but most likely had, & the other half was a brown colour so i know it hadn^t been recharged, i smelled it to try to see if i could smell any bleach on it & couldn^t, the brown stuff was still in the filter bag, the white stuff was still in the container it came in. i rinse out my filters in between water changes, i use the water from the tank, but now that u mention it i imagine there was some residual bleach in it, but its funny that both of my roseline sharks died & nothin else seemed to be effected, i checked my shrimp & they both had lost one of there filtering claws, don^t know how, but at least i know i didn^t poison them,
  9. hi everyone, i have a problem that i have never had before, first let me tell u about my tank, 55 gallon, medium planted with red & green plants mediu stocked with mostly raindows, 3 loaches, 17 fish altogether, i did my usually water change on saturday, do one every week, take out a good third, done my medicating as usuall & fertilizing, everything as usuall except i put in some old purigen in one of my filters, thinking i would take some pics & polish the water, i woke up sunday morning & my roseline sharks where both dorsal fin down, dead as a door knob, they have been very hardy fish, plus my 2 shrimp, wood & flower, but nothing else is wrong, i took out the purigen & done another water change, & just done one tonight but the permaters of my tank r as follows, NITRITE---.08,NITRATE----20 ppm, & AMMONIA----0.6 now iVe never had my nitrite this hi before & my nitrates have been around 10-20 & my ammonia is hi too, so whats going on, is it because i used that old purigen i found in the back of my storage or something else, i haven^t added nothin lately or done anything different except add the old purigen. i was injecting c02 by a home made bottle lastweek but stopped it last thursday, so if anyone can give me any ideas of what i should be or not be doing i would certainly appreciate it, thanks for reading & repying to my post. kirk
  10. ok i^m not that bright, when it says u have to contribute to the forum, what does that mean really, that u have to post something to buy or sell first before u can view this part? or just post something somewhere? You have to post in other forums, not the buy/sell. For example post in the "say hello" forum and introduce yourself or post any questions you may have in other forums, or if your able to, answer some questions. ok i^ve done that, just by posting in here & i^ve also posted in the c02 planted tank section, but still cann^t open up this section, unless i^m completely daft & there isn^t anything that anyones selling right now. looking for a larger tank perferrably 120-180 gallon size.

  12. thanks again werner, thats what i am doing, i^m shutting down the c02 at night & putting my power head back on the surface, with the c02 on all day by about 5 p.m. they r all gathered on the surface, thats when i turn off the c02.& u r so right this DIY CRAP is a totall pain. gonna find a real good system this weekend hopefully, heck who needs to eat any way as long as the fishies r happy, i can always eat them
  13. thank u jvision,i^m giving my plants there regular doses od flourish: iron, comprehensive & trace, 2-3 times weekly with weekly water changes, & the lights r sufficient, compact with 97 watts & a double t8 with 23-25 watts output. i put fertilizer in the substrate when i started it up, about inch & a half under the gravel thruout the tank, but that was several years ago, (terralite, ferralite) cann^t remeber the exact name of the red clay looking stuff i put there. just cann^t seem to get this thing going like what i want it to be.
  14. This is so true, I run pressurized Co2 at 6bbls per sec 24/7, 3 watts per gal of light for 12 hrs a day, & ferts. My tank is o2 saturated all the time and pearls every day within 4 hrs of the lights being on. great thanks a lot everyone, i^m finding out this so called DIY is a gigantic PITFA, pardon my abraviations, one question though, if the c02 actually raises the 02 why at night do all my fish seem to be gasping for air at the surface, even the bottomdwellers? thats why i was concerned about the sufficating them with 02. or am i getting another whole new problem? thank u again for answering all my questions, maybe someday i might actually learn what i^m doing, after 10 years.
  15. back again, i hooked up 3, 3litre bottles to inject diy c02 in my tank, now i^m afraid that the fish aren^t going to get enough oxygen now that all the c02 is being pumped into my tank,is that going to be a problem for me, i i placed one in each of my filter heads, as i was hoping it would disperse it better, a fluval 403 cannister & a fluval 2 part powerhead, & the last one i just lightly buried in the substrate, i have check valves on 2 of the lines & have turned them down some, but theres pretty well a constant flow of tiny bubbles thruout my tank.
  16. thank u very much, i^ll start today & get a couple of larger bottles & make the caps work for me, as for the lights, the compacts r giving out about 96 watts, r at least thats what the box says, & the t8^s r giving out about 23-25 watts, so i think i have enough but if i don^t please tell me.
  17. i have put driftwood in my tank but first i litterally boiled the crap out of it, & plus it takes out the tinting u get at first too,i boiled them for about 15 minutes,
  18. hi everyone, just a simple question that i cann^t seem to get a straight answer, i have a 55 gallon tank medium planted with a lot of red plants, medium populated with about 15 fish, mostly rainbows, roseline sharks, & loaches, i have been trying to inject c02 with the simple diffuser method with the step ladder thing, but all of it just seems to bubble up to the surface, then i tried a double hose off the bottle with a white air bubbler as a diffuser, but that just sent smaller bubbles to the surface, trying to figure out a better way & try to keep it on the cheap as possible to diffuse the c02 better,i^ve tried running it thru my power head but it just send the bubbles to the surface faster, everything seems to be doing ok, just want the plants to be doing better & keeping there bright red colours longer, & i would also like to know of some simple home receipts to make, like the proper mixture of bakers yeast to sugar & if i should add anything else to make it last longer. the bottle is the same one that came with the diffuser when i bought it, so maybe 1/2 liter in size. my tanks perameters as far as chemistry is minimal ammonia, 20-25 pp nitrates, mininal nitrites, just reading on the iron tester, having a hard time keeping my iron up, adding a couple cap fulls daily just so it registers, using flourish iron, trace & comprehensive, also adding step 2 & 3 & rx for the fish, as far as lighting goes i run a compact 6700k & a double buld canister t8, so i think iam getting enough light, they r on a timer, they go on at 7:30 a.m. & turn off at 8:00 p.m. thank u for reading & answering my long winded post,
