  1. Thanks for all the comments folks! The acei are a group of F1 "Itungi" or Black Tanzanians I found @ Big Al's in Calgary a few months back. I think I scooped up the whole tank of them over a couple weeks when I was originally stocking the tank. (Truth be told I'm looking to part with 3 of them) As for the stupid green cheesy looking brick: its part of a group of aquarium decorations my wife keeps dumping in my tanks, including the brick, a little plastic scuba diver, treasure chests etc. Whenever I redecorate, she has to add the "finishing touch" lol. Now that she has her own community tank, I spend less time scooping shark heads and treasure chests out of my cichlid tank. :smokey: I'll post an updated video with the new decor and new fish ( M. Chipokae) tonight. This tank has been running for over six months, and I think all I have to do to prevent overstocking in the long run is part with some of the lab hongi SRT and black tanzanian acei. Oh and scoop some of the renegade 3/4" rusty juvies out. updated video, had to rescue my firemouth and severum from my Jack Dempseys, they seem to be happy with the africans, I'll see how it goes.
  2. My Mbuna usually get Omega-1 Sinking Veggie pellets daily, Spirulina/Brine Shrimp twice a week, and daily offerings of leftover veggies from the fridge. Try to get your mbuna on blanched lettuce, zuchinni and brussel sprouts early on, its healthy for them and gets rid of spare veggies. Nice choice on the Saulosi.
  3. I had similar white flecks in my african tank after adding stone I collected on the elbow river. The blue-ish grey slate(?) with white streaks and blotches. Anyway it looks very similar to the stone in your tank, and it took a little over a week to settle for me. I notice everytime I wash the stonework or move it around alot my white specks return for a day or so. Not sure if your specks are the same thing, just my 2 cents. PS: My african cichlids also tend to rub their sides against the substrate now and then, no signs of ich, so I think it's somewhat normal as far as I can tell.
  4. I had a thick green bloom in my tank a couple weeks ago. Easy fix for me was to shut down the lights and leave the tank in darkness for a couple days. However, it was an all-rock-no-plants african cichlid tank. When reading up on the whole green water issue though, I was told having breeding gouramis can keep free-floating algae away as their fry susposedly eat it up.
  5. Here are some of my suggestions: Pseudotropheus Polit http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=914 P Acei Itungi "Black Tanzanian" http://www.malawicichlids.dk/html/acei.html P Socolofi Albino http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1786 If your not diehard on staying Malawi-true, there seems to be quite a few zebra obliquedens http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1556 around.
  6. Heya, I currently have a 4ft 55g tank that I've been playing with the idea of setting up as a densely planted home for my moonlight gouramis and small school of tetra's. As I have very little knowledge of aquatic plants (my plants didnt do so well with my mbuna for example) I've been spending hours reading up on the forums. My question is whether to go with CO2 in the form of cylinder/regulator, or to find a more "natural" method of getting CO2 into my tank. Specifically, I'm wondering if, rather than a sugar/yeast - bubbler if anyone has tried off-gassing CO2 from a couple carboys of homemade wine into their planted tank. It would be easy to switch out carboys every couple weeks during bottling and pretty much have a constant supply. I'm not sure exactly how much CO2 a 55g planted would need, but I found this link to show how much CO2 the wine kits could generate. http://homewinery.info/blog/2009/06/home-w...xide-emissions/ I plan on reading up on this more, but any thoughts or input would be great.
  7. If the tank has been running for only two weeks, my opinion is that your tetras are being hit by a mid-cycle nitrite spike. The neons I've kept have never really been the most hardy fish, especially in a new tank. Even when I have a new tank starting its cycle, my pleco's and labyrinth-fish (like your betta) seem to do fine through the process of maturing the water in a regular cycle. Two weeks ago, did you put water in, start the filter and put all the fish in together? If so, I would pick up some cycling liquid, or bacteria-boost. I've always noticed a spike in either my ammonia or nitrite right before an outbreak of parasites or disease. In short, when faced with a similar dilemma, I've given my small tanks shots of Cycle daily, dropped an airstone in for aeration, and held off on water changes until I knew the cycle had run its first course (ie 3 weeks min). Good luck!
  8. I got my ebjd from Riverfront for 20$, with his colors and size most ppl at first glance think he's a large male betta lol. I wouldn't pay 90 bucks for one though, they are pretty fragile, not only prone to getting sick, but very touchy with water chem/tankmates aggression. He's in my 55g with a RJD female, anyone know of a good source in Calgary for 2-3" RJDf's or better yet, BGJD's?
  9. I've recently picked up a 3" EBJD. From what I've read about them, they are susposed to be quite fragile, picky with water chem, easily stressed, not as tough as normal JD's etc etc etc. Day one, the little bugger jumped and knocked himself out on the top glass of my 55g. Fine the next day. Day 6 the 55g nitrite spiked like hell and my water quality crashed (the 55g went from 15 small fish to just the JD, cycle crashed.... my bad). The EBJD toughed it out til I realized what was going on and in the 'state of emergency' I was in, I put him in my 100g with (at the time) 30 Malawi Mbuna(still 3-4" but really vicious little buggers). For a couple weeks, the "fragile" EBJD did fine with the Mbuna, even shrugging off my male p. elongatus. Now he is happy in my 55g misfit tank with a Severum, a Venustus, a Jewel and a Malawi Blue Dolphin. I love this fish, it has quickly become my fav. Also, I believe Riverfront has some of these guys as well, and with their sale going on.......
  10. I scored 10 Lab. Hongis and a 29 gallon w/ Fluval Can. 2 of the fish didn't make it, but the rest have a full 55g to grow out. Urban_Cowboy, if you ever want to sell off any of your Hongi, let me know, as I'm building a single species tank of em.
  11. Need help id'ing the juv african in this photo. The white one, with the yellow fins. Purchased a "Aulonocara Lwanda", and this is the guy I received (not a Lwanda duh) Because he/she is still so young, I cannot determine if it is a Lab Perlmutt, or a Metriaclima Greshakei, maybe something else? Since this photo it has darkened at times, sometimes blueish shades, and sometimes darker grey bars when pushed around. Thanks a bunch!

    Hello

Heya I'm a 29 year old carpenter living in calgary and dove back into the hobby earlier this year. My father kept multiple tanks when I was young, and worked as a marine biologist out east. I hope to someday replicate his giant coldwater trout tank . I've always been a fish nut, and a bit of a geek for water chemistry and DIY filtration. With my current set-ups, I'm hoping to take a crack at successfully breeding some of my species, so I tend to be doing most of my reading along those lines. My Tanks: 100 Gallon Lake Malawi Young Mbuna's/Haps -15g Wet/dry Trickle Filter with inline mini-biowheel/sponge filter 1m4f Iodotropheus Sprengerae "Rusty Cichlids" 1m3f Labidochromis sp Hongi "Super Red Tops" 2m8f Pseudotropheus sp Acei Itungi "Black Tanzanians" 1m2f Pseudotropheus Elongatus "Chewere" 1m3f Cyrtocara Moorii "Blue Dolphins" 55 Gallon Community/Gourami -Fluval 305 Can Pair Sunset Gourami's Pair Gold Gourami's Pair Blue Gourami's Pair Neon Blue Dwarf Gourami's Pair Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami's 1 Moonlight Gourami 1 Clown Pleco small gang of various tetra's 4 juvenile Flying Fox Assassin Snails 15 Gallon Mini-Tanganyika Neolamprologus Multifaciatus "Shellies" Great to be part of a local online forum! See ya around.
