  1. We should pool our money, buy a set that could be left in the hands of someone who can breed them and then divy up the babies. Enough to cover the investment plus interest!!.......good idea? Dunno
  2. Plastic ones! I have never had luck with mbunda and plants....
  3. So I was out at the dog park with my daughter and my nieces and the dog, when one of the girls notices a snail shell, next thing you know we have smashed the thin clear ice and are collecting spiral shaped snail shells. Well after a while we found some still alive. Well needless to say I left with a Tim's cup with a dozen or so snails. After thinking about it and reading about potential parasites not sure what to do with these guys. Anyone here have any experience with wild snails? Should I go chuck 'em back in the cold water of the pond? Or take my chances? Can I run any meds on em?
  4. Thanks ladies! That clears it up
  5. have been told to on several occasions, when I had a disease outbreak. I beleive that it is seachem that makes specific african cichlid salts as well as other brands. Just need to have a way to guage where I am at for concentration 'cause I seem to have lost track, so I am unsure if I am too low or worse too high.
  6. I have been told several things in regards to the truth about salt. I am keeping african cichlids from Malawi. I do have a refracometer (although I don't think I can spell it), so I can get an accurate reading. Just don't know how much to put in, and the X tablespoons per gallon thing is not real accurate when you loose count 'cause the kids are helping with water changes or the fact that I am easily distracted buy shiny things. I have been doing 1.005 to 1.01. Is this in line or out? And using marine salt so there are minerals etc in there. Not to mention WAY cheaper. I live in Red Deer here the water is hard like most of Alberta
  7. Maybe my first reaction was the correct one, not a great mix, it may work, but I don't need them gone so bad that I will let just anyone have 'em. Thanks Guys, appreciate the help.
  8. I have 2 male yellow labs I have thrown on kijiji, I just have too many males. A guy just sent me an email asking if they would be ok with convicts and tiger oscars of the same size. I am unfamiliar with these 2 breeds of fish, but I would like to give him a real answer, not just what I think. so what you think? I sent him a reply asking the size of the tank also. Just heard convicts are mean lil buggers, and oscars are just big
  9. Acetone does break down silicone it may help if you can get it to soak in for long enough, it may also work as a lube for your razor blades and wire. I have used razor blades as a wedge, just keep pounding them on top of each other, once you get 2 or 3 in try to get one beside it and keep on going. Use the ones that have the unsharpened edge that fits into a scraper handle. It takes forever and is rather dangerous, so wear the proper PPE and acectone should help too. Good luck, and remember not to get too rammy
  10. I have been told they bear a striking resemblance to marineland filters, the pads etc are quite similar. Not sure who makes who but some of the reviews I have found have been favorable, and yep 9 watt uv built in!
  11. Well I purchased a Sun Sun 303b canister off of Ebay as merely a bio filter/water circulator for my 125 gallon cichlid tank. I currently have an fx5, i thought about power head to get rid of some dead spots at one end of the tank. I figured for 8o bucks why not give this a try, after all the fx5 doesn't have a ton of room inside for bio media. So this will help with bio filtration. It also has a 9w uv to boot. Well it rolled in earlier this week and first impressions are good. A little physically smaller than I thought, it claims to be able to run a 130 gallon tank. 370 gallons per hour. It comes with a filters and some carbon as well as a small handful of bioballs and biomax rings. After topping those up I set it up. Easy to prime, you just hit the big plunger on top to start the siphon, once it stops plug it in. It is quiet, and seems to move water pretty good. The instructions are not great, poorly translated, but anyone who is mechanically inclined wont need them. There are pictures Good enough for what I am doing with it. Would be perfect for a 55 or 75 o0r maybe a 90 gallon tank. We will see how it goes.
  12. I recieved a 55 gallon tank that is dirty and was in storage for a long time. Just wondering what I can use to clean it. It has hard water stains where the last 10 or so gallons evaporated out. There is dry slime, goo, gunk or mung on the glass. It's a mess. Not sure what to use to get this thing clean. Any advice?
  13. It sounds like he has internal parasites; I would treat the tank for those. Hopefully she is in a quarantine tank and you don't have to dose the whole tank. The best way to deliver the meds is to soak her food in it if you can get her to eat. Good luck
  14. So earlier today I witnessed 2 of my female German Red's fighting, lip locked kind of fighting! There is a 3.5"male, and the other sub dom male is 2.5 as well as the two 2.5"females. Tonight the sub male and a female of similar size were lip locked! But not in a sexy way! They are in a 125gallon tank with 14 other fish and have always gotten along...Do I have a sub sub dominant males on my hands? Or one tough little lady? I realize the tank is a bit understocked at the moment but I have been trying to get a disease outbreak under control. She shows no signs of being a male. My 2 males are clearly males. Any Ideas as to what could be going on?
  15. The air rising out of the tube creates a low pressure, this draws water through the sponge, collecting the gunk, and loading it with good bacteria. Simple yet ingenious
  16. I have heard a lot of people say 1 inch of fish per gallon, this means their adult length. For example a 1 1/2 inch cichliid that grows to 4 inches gets 4 gallons of tank.
  17. New to alberta aquatica, used to use ABaquatica, but AI have heard that people here are cooler I have a 125 gallon tank full of african cichlids. Glad to be here!!
