  1. I have cultures of microworms growing for the fry, if I ever get fry! I'm going to try with putting a cup in with the male tonight and then replace the female (in her vase) on Friday. I'll give it one more go, but I'm thinking the male just isn't up for it. *sigh*
  2. I re-homed my cherry barbs and bought 2 more girls for my sorority tank. Not the best idea. Bossy Miss decided she was going to fight the new girls. The new girls are each in their own tank for now. I'm going to add a bit more plants and distractions before I try to reintroduce them. I have a feeling they might have to stay out on their own. I made my first attempt at a spawning. The female is in a large glass vase withing the male's tank. The water is tea coloured because of the almond leaves. I put a piece of bubble wrap to encourage the male to build his nest under it. It's been 24 hrs and there's no trace of a bubble nest. When I went to check on them last night the male was hiding in his cave. *sigh* Maybe he's just too old. I'm going to try replacing the bubble wrap with a cut in half Styrofoam cup. The water is at 26C which might be a little too cool. I was really hoping for some sparks. Has anyone had luck with releasing the female before the male has a nest made?
  3. lol Yes, it didn't take long for them to learn tank lid open = fooooood time!!! Thanks. That's a great idea. I went searching for egg spots tonight. It is very obvious on copper girl and I can see one on blue, though it's harder to see. I can't see anything on bossy miss cambodian. So I'm guessing he's bossy Mr. cambodian. Now how do I convince the fish store they made a mistake? I'd like to exchange him for a female... Maybe I'm going to have to wait for him to blow a nest. *sigh* The second decision is which female to breed to my dragon boy....
  4. Thanks! Looking forward to more betta pictures. Good luck with midterms.
  5. Yes, I'm in Edmonton. Great to know there are local enthusiasts around! I'm going to see if I can get some tummy shots.
  6. Thanks for the tip. I've tried looking, but their fins are sort of in the way. Also, I'm not sure if it would show at all on my cambodian "female". I'm definitely keeping an eye out though. The fish store swears they are all females, but I think they might not actually know and are depending on their source to have sexed them properly. The cambodian is the bossiest of the lot and the copper has the mildest temperament.
  7. My betta family the 3 girls #1 With flash Without flash #2 with flash Without flash #3 with flash Without flash group shot Boys (I need to take some better shots...) I'm hoping to breed the dragon boy with one of the females. I haven't decided which female yet. I'm actually not 100% sure the females are all girls because they're plakat and so could be males. Especially the white girl because she appears to have a red beard - which might make her a he. :P My females are also pretty small still - about the same size as a cherry barb, so they're going to have to beef up a bit before they're ready to breed.
  8. Nice tank! Is that a red eye puffer at the top?
  9. What a gorgeous fish! I love the colour. Congrats!
  10. I posted a few pictures of my betta (Sparks) and my pea puffer tank in the freshwater photo forum. I have an album on Facebook http://www.facebook....d=1246902187396 My betta pictures aren't great. I have to figure away to get around the plastic tank reflecting or showing up grainy. I don't use a flash, but the camera has a focus light... practice practice practice!
  11. Please bare with me, I'm just learning how to get decent fishy pics. The betta is in a plastic tank which makes it all the more difficult. :P All of these photos and a few more are available on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/p.php?i=566171511&k=5YC456RZTT6G6BD1XKZUY3RUS6BAX3ZDVWBU&oid=1246902187396
  12. I started keeping pea puffers in my 10 gallon tank. To keep the puffers happy I started a snail tank. My snail tank is now also home to a betta. The problem is that my betta is eating the sinking veggie pellets I feed the snails and is becoming obnoxiously fat. I thought he wouldn't bother with the kelp pellets but I've caught him snacking on them. Any ideas for what I could feed my snails that a betta won't eat? I'm worried my betta will die from over stuffing himself.
  13. Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to check it out.
  14. I'm also looking for a betta in Edmonton. I'd rather not support the pet store, their bettas always look sad. Can anyone suggest a breeder in Edmonton? I'm not fussy on the type of tail.

    Hello

Hello, I'm 28 and I live in Edmonton. I have had guppies for as long as I can remember. My family, especially my brother, have always kept aquariums. (My brother has been breeding oscars, angels, convicts etc etc. over the years.) I've helped out but never been fully responsible for any fish besides guppies or goldfish. I've recently decided it's time to step it up a bit. I'm now the proud owner of four pea puffers and two ottos. I have well established sword plants (I don't know any other name for them...) growing in my tank (10g), but I'm trying to get a few more plants going. I have 2 new plants, but I was surprised to notice that neither came with roots. Hopefully they will develop. So... at the moment I'm trying to devise a way to get more light into my tank and ways to keep my puffers supplied with snails. I brought home 10 snails and there were snails living in the tank before I brought home the puffers. It's been 2 days and I can't find a single snail. The snails might be hiding in the gravel, but if they are there still aren't many! I've found quite a few empty shells. The puffers won't touch the thawed shrimp the fish store suggested. Figures. Maybe they've just gorged themselves on snails? :P I think I'm going to set up a 5 gallon with some plants and a betta to farm snails. I'm looking forward to scouring the forums here for advice. Cheers, Kate
