  1. haha! Yah. Vince has the angles figured no doubt! I breed a fair amount of fish, but I am more focused on completing the next level of CAOAC breeder award - Advanced merit. For me, that means Anabandtoids, tetras and minnows, as I have succesfully spawned everything else I need for that level, including the 4 or 5 target fish required. Sadly, of those three groups only wild bettas really have any interest for me, so I am breeding them just to prove I can I guess.... The wild bettas though, those I really like! I have a spawn of Betta picta going right now.
  2. I think you're just playing around. Bored maybe. :smokey:
  3. Nope. But there are links to the executive of the club, and an explanation of the requirements. If you're interested you could contact one of them for a further description. Edit: was rambling.
  4. http://www.calgaryaquariumsociety.com/bap.php
  5. You of course played Rocky 1 and 3 for them? :smokey: Chu can dooooo eeeet leettle bettas! Have a great time FCG. Good luck and see you when you get back.
  6. I tend to use cherry shrimp as clean up crew (and sometimes food) in other tanks. The brightest, most colorful ones tend to be in my non heated killie tanks.
  7. You get to see ALL their stock that way. I'd still like to go there, but I also watch carefully what they post here, then email back and forth with Tuan to find out what the prices are (he doesn't like to post the prices). But you're right. for $10 delivery it's crazy not to if you know what you want! I think that works out to about $10 a bag though. The amount of stuff that Blue Ram bought, he probably couldn't fit in the th $10 container size (just guessing). I've also had my daughter stop in and pick up fish for me when she was coming to Calgary. She said there were super helpful and friendly.
  8. Nice. I had them ship me some of the licorice gouramis. I am keeping them in straight calgary water though. Didn't realize they needed softer water. I thought feeding was more an issue with them, that they were very much a 'live food' fish. The shipping was only $10 and they arrived next day. Worth it for me! I'm like a kid in a candy store when I go to Edmonton. So many great retailers there.
  9. They'll eat well.... That is where my licorice gouramis went. They should plump up nicely.. :smokey:
  10. Riverfront. Pisces. would be my suggestions. With leaning towards Riverfront. Most of the stores in Calgary tend to be stock in trade stuff, with not a lot of surprises. If they do have some, they tend to come from the few local breeders! haha! Hit up Fairdeal (Harold) for sure. He has a lot of interesting stuff. What are you looking for? I have a few interesting livebearers and some killies, but for the main part my stuff is all in the 'breeding/grow out mode right now.
  11. Those are nice. Where might there be?
  12. I'm in Arizona, back next week. Someone from the breakfast should be able to drive over afterwards and spot them for you? If not, get in touch with Ken and he can track someone down. or figure out a way to have them spotted.
  13. I use cherry shrimp for the same thing. I was told this weekend that there was an article in the AKA magazine from a fellow that has been doing the same for the last 5 years. I was suspicious of them for a bit when a batch of eggs slowly dissapeared, but now think that the eggs were going bad, and the shrimp will eat them then. To be sure, you might have to do a bit of experimentation, but I do trust my cherry shrimp with most eggs, and once they hatch I then also add an asolene spixi snail (smallish) to keep any hydra infestation out when I start the live foods like bbs. You are correct to not add the snails till the eggs hatch, in my humble opinion. Also, keep in mind the shrimp run the risk of being a snack if you have any adult fish in the tank.
  14. As you can see by the replies, the answer is Yes. Your shrimp will get eaten. Definetely add a little cocktail sauce to spice things up for the corys! :smokey: Beyond a certain size (that being it won't fit in their mouth) the shrimp will be fine, but all young ones that fit in their mouth will be considered lunch. baby shrimp are very tiny.
  15. hmm. what to bring for the auction to make it fun? Some white cloud minnows for ponds? Probably a big bag of cherry shrimp. Maybe a pair of Aphyosemion australe 'orange'? (The lyretail killies) a pair of Skiffia lermae perhaps? Anyone working on CAOAC certification and need to spawn one of their target livebearers? had a look at the website of these pond guys. This should be pretty interesting!
  16. I have a 30 lb bag of it. I'll bring you a bit. I'll also cut you a piece of glass to put on top. bring a margarine container with a lid and I'll show you how to set it up. Preferably the 2 lb size I find works best. Also, do you have quick oats? That is what I usually feed them, and occasionally I will gut load them with NLS growth, or random flake foods. See you TO - night.
  17. label them as pickled herring or pickled eggs. Something that 'The department of War and Finance' normally wouldn't even peak in the container of. What she doesn't know, won't hurt me. For you ladies, just label it as some kind of blush chartreuse facial make up cream or something like that. No man will look in that container. True story.
  18. I used 5-50 mic Golden pearls that I got from Harold. Seemed to work well as I have quite a few fry on bbs now.
  19. Welcome! What kinds of fish are you interested in/keeping? Do you intend to actively breed, or are you more about the displaying? Were you at the Edmonton or Calgary workshop/auctions? and @ Werner: That may be, but many of us are indeed amateurs at pimping out our fish!
  20. so at the reccomendation of a Alberta Aquatica member, I bought pool sand from Western pump. I didn't even rinse it, just fired it in the tank to see how it would work. It was cloudy and a day later it still is a bit, so I would recommend at least rinsing it once, but if you have to 'rinse the hell' out of the play sand, I'd say go with the pool filter sand. They gave me a bag of it for $11. It looks like normal brownish beach sand. Certainly not fancy, but effective. How much is the play sand from Home depot?
  21. Indeed Welcome! You're in the cat bird seat there! You can attend the Edmonton and Calgary aquarium club meetings!
  22. Yes, they were spixies. I got some long fin tetras, some critter crumbs and a pail of random stuff. And FCG obviously scooped the parking lot deal on the betta pictas, now I shall be doing this  and this  until she relents and gives me one of the females. At which time it will promplty leap out of my tank through a 2mm space and dry up and die! :grr: I also was handed an amazing pair of killies that I couldn't stop staring at. I love the parking lot! Thanks everyone who came out and supported the Calgary Aquarium Society and the hobby through your participation, whether it was putting stuff in the auction, working the auction or just flat out spending your money! A strong healthy aquarium club allows us to bring in fun and amazing (well, I thought they were) speakers like Gary Lange and Spencer Jack. And a HUGE thanks to all the Edmonton and out of town club members who jumped in and helped out so much! Dan
  23. this. When I do a W/C I first pull about a gallon of tank water in an ice cream bucket and rinse that tanks sponge filter in it.
  24. I am bagging like the WIND! see you soon.
