  1. I'm moving my tanks to the basement and as I do them I'm having questions on safety issues regarding extension cords, surge protectors and such: I'm using two extension cords to connect my tanks and the shorter 1.8m one say not to connect one extension cord to another, so is it ok to first have a 10m cord, connect a power surge to it, connect the 1.8m to the power surge and then connect another power surge with all the other aquarium plugs to the 1.8m one or would it not be safe? I have only 2 electric plugs in the basement and they are both far from the tanks. Is it safe to have 2 extension cords (the ones mentioned above) plugged on 24/7? One of the cords say it is know to contain things like lead that can cause cancer in the state of California... can you and how would you get cancer from it? Sorry for the long questions and thanks in advance!
  2. And whatever tank you get make sure they are longer tanks rather than tall tanks!
  3. Because they are adorable! I think seahorses are my favorite marine and maybe I'll get some if I convert my 25Gal!
  4. Yeah I would recommend keeps on doing water changes! If you get a 10Gal and put the fish in there without being cycled you might get an ammonia spike and kill them all! On the safe side maybe add more Carbon and Sponges.
  5. Even though Calgary water is hard, it's not like you can't keep any soft water fish but they just might not breed for you. I guess if you are looking for larger fish maybe try some Congo Tetra? Since they are schooling fish I don't really think they'll bother your pleco. You can also try Angelfish and definitely consider some Pearl Gourami or Moonlight Gourami (really beautiful fish and hardy as well!).
  6. Whoa, for under 10mins they are pretty big! And nice pups btw!
  7. Haha same here. I live in the NW and since I don't drive I have to take the transit for about 1 - 2 h depending on the FS to and from. Imagine carrying a fish tank and fluorite gravels on the transit (happened before)!
  8. Welcome to AA ! I think the NE is the "good part" since it's were all the good petshops are located :P
  9. Nah they are adorable looking but I'm not really a fish person, or something that has a spine! Every time I go to LFS I always keeps my eyes peeled for shrimp and nothing else. Just last time I was at Pisces and they had this tank of beautiful fish and the first thing I saw was a cool leopard shelled pond snail! Even now I can't remember what those fish were... I'm hopeless
  10. I second Blue Ram. I remember Mykiss or some other guy did a test with the worms or something at BC Aquaria, I just can't find it right now. Also maybe visit this page? http://www.bcaquaria.com/forum/hospital-section-12/levamisole-hci-pure-camallanus-nematode-red-hair-like-worm-protruding-vents-978/
  11. In winter I will consider a space heater but it will not be as sufficient since the space cannot be sealed off 100%.
  12. Cute! If they stay 2inch long then I'd definitely get one lol
  13. vince0 - Ooh that's nice! But I think 78 is a bit too high for the CRS and for all my tanks when the light comes up, practically all my tank is high light :/ jvision - I'll keep that in mind. They kind have to go to the basement because there is no room to put more in my living room! They are going to dent area in the basement so I'll see if I can seal if off and add a small heater to the room. Thanks for your suggestion Evolution - I just looked up the Eheim Jager heater and I saw a temperature range on the top. Can you like say set it at 24 and it'll always maintain that temp and will turn off if it gets too hot, but on if it gets below that? The one I'm using I have to turn it on, wait till it gets to the desired temp, and then turn it off. But if you change the set temp then it doesn't turn on when it gets low. It really sucks.
  14. So cute and awesome pics! Definitely post us more when you have them!
  15. Hello and welcome Hope you'll like it here and contribute your experience at the DIY section!
  16. I'm planning on moving my aquariums from the small living room to the basement due to lack of space. The basement is a few degrees lower then the living room which is good in the summer, but not so good in the winter. I have heaters but I'm still deathly afraid of a temperature drop (but they often experience rapid rise in temp) since the tanks ARE only 10gal each. I'm currently using Hagen Elite Radiant brand and have found 2 works really well and the other I can't get the temperature set no matter what. When we moved here in March the temp for the basement was around 18-19C, so at Christmas time it will really drop! What are some good reliable heaters? And any tips or anything I need to be aware of in keeping the tanks in the basement?
  17. Oh man do I feel bad for the guppies. My grade 10 science teacher had a fish tank in the room and it was sitting near the window (HUGE temp fluxs), is infected with algae, no filter for 2 month and not even the hardy MTS or pond snails survived in that tank! At the end of the semester we took water from the tank and tried to look for "bugs" in the tank and I was like "what the heck?! Your temp flux killed everything in there!" I really hope the guppies will have a better fate
  18. I can never cull fish either. Have you tried surrender them to pet shops? Or just keep them.
  19. Welcome! And before you know it you'll be addicted to fish
  20. Welcome! Hope all goes well with your plan!
  21. Man I'd love to go to the CAOAC... but it'd just cost too much and I'd be away too long
  22. I know that's why I have been dying trying to lower the pH...
