I was stupid enough or in too much of a hurry and left out a package of frozen food. When I found it I threw it back in to the freezer. My question is, can I still use it or should I throw it out because it was fully thawed and then refroze(left out overnight)?

I have been looking for them ever since I started this tank. They are hare to come by. Also I think big Al's is a getting a little to pricey.

I'm trying to buy some juvenile discus but I find most of the suppliers way out of my price range. So I have to wait until I obtain a larger disposable income or find a seller willing to go within my budget for a half dozen or so. I would like about the size of a loonie. Right now $60.00 and above is alittle expensive for me for my first discus tank. Not saying that I am a beginner I had fish for over 25 years of and on mainly reef tanks

What you are saying is I need to add some more fish to the system to add more nitrates? I will turn off the skimmer and only use it when the surface scum gets to heavy. I will also redirect the filter outlet so it does not break the surface. The tank is 36" long 20" high and I think 14" wide. The light is a 2 bulb T-5 6500k and 1 white and 1 pink or red tinge to it.

Okay I went to big Al's and picked up a surface skimmer and an air stone. Installed the air stone and the skimmer. I also adjusted my canister return to brake the water surface. What a difference in water clarity. But one bad note to this is that my son sat on my glass lid and broke it now I have alot of water evaporation round 3 gallons a week. And I also have green hair algae growing, What is the best way to stop that?

Sorry about taking over the topic. I just bought a KH/GH kit from api and having a hard time reading the results. It asks to add 1 drop unitll the water changes color. How do I read the scale. How much does 1 drop mean in ppm? Or do you look at in drops in this many drops mean you k/gh is at this reading? Right now my kh is at 5 drops to change color and my gh is at 18 drops. And I have no idea what this means, the instructions that came with it are not very clear.

I'm doing the same thing and having the same problem trying to drop the ph low enough for the discus. I added a pressurized co2 unit and that helped a little. I'm thinking after reading in the other post to use a ro/di 50/50 mix. Always thought you could not use ro/di water in fresh water due to lack of minerals. If I use ro/tap mix do you have to add a supplement? Kind of glad I joined this forum!

Thank you for all sugestions I think I will add an air pump to turn on at night as well as get some floating java moss. What do you guys think? Where Is the best place for picking up plants in the Edmonton area?

I started my tank in April of this year and last night I was looking in the tank and notices a film on the surface. So I grabbed a small net and proceeded to scoop off the film. My Question is what is this film and where does it come from? It was a clear sort of film but it scooped off the water and kind of piled into the net. My tank has fluorite black as a substrate with Amazon Swords, Red Mellon Sword. dwarf grass and some micro swords. I run a pressurized co2 system @ 1-2 drops/sec and an ehiem 2213 canister filter. I also added fluorite tabs in the substrate every 90 days life the LFS suggested plus add liquid fluorite 5ml. every other week. My numbers are PH 7.4 Ammonia 0ppm, Nitrites 0ppm, Nitrates 0ppm. I can not figure out why this film is forming, am I doing some thing wrong. Thanks In Advance

What a nice start up. I feel your pain when it come to starting up anew. But after many costly mistakes I have still not learned the rule of slowness sometimes does win the race. Welcome to the forum. I just started on the forum myself.

I had the same size tank and has a Lee's air driven skimmer that hung on the inside that worked well when the wooden air block was not plugged. I all ways thought that the bigger skimmers were better in sump use now I know you can do some elaborate plumbing to incorporate larger skimmers.

If there are a lot of discus keepers in Edmonton I wish they would contact me. I have been looking in the bargain hunter, a lot of forums like this one. Every one I found was out of town and had to order with no warranty on weather the fish will survive the transport from where it is coming from. And I really like buying locally it seams that the only contact any one has given me i from Saskatoon. So I will pm him with a few questions. Don't be afraid to pm me.
