  1. I will definitely get on the foil idea I've been presented with in this thread. Also, I leave the lights on for 10 hours every day. I have since taken the plants out of the problem 20g and put them into another tank with proper lighting and they seem to have perked up but the plants were browning heavily in the "Walmart lights 20g".
  2. This is what I'm trying to be! So have we basically come to the conclusion I need to start dosing ferts of some kind and my lighting isn't the problem?
  3. It's on a 20g tank and I actually have 2 of these lights on it sitting about 5" off the top of the water. I'm currently growing java moss, amazon swords, and some unidentified floating plant (it's the stuff you see floating in essentially every LFS, the most generic fish plant I can think of). The substrate is standard aquarium gravel and I have 4 convicts and 2 firemouths that are growing out in it so I was thinking I didn't need to dose any extra ferts considering these fish are pigs (plenty of ammonia). Am I wrong on this?
  4. In that case, something similar to this.
  5. This would be very similar to what I'm using, not the exact ones though. I am using fluorescent bulbs though. I can get the exact specs off of the box when I get home in a bit here.

    Lighting?

Hey all! I have another noob question for you all and I hope you have a simple answer. So I have a couple tanks with no hoods on them and I've been having essentially no luck with trying to grow plants in them. I just have these cheap Walmart lights that I have flipped over the edge of the tank and directed onto my plants. Can you all tell me EXACTLY what bulbs I need to use for this sort of setup? I've read a lot on what I need to grow plants and I get lost in all the numbers (which numbers are important and which aren't) and the different colors of light and whatnot. I'll be growing simple (so they say) low-light plants. Just to clarify, I don't need help choosing the lights for my tanks hoods but rather I need to find a standard light bulb that I can pick up from the hardware store that will suit an aquarium plants needs. Thanks!
  7. I've seeded all of my tanks with the so-called "pest" snails. I think the little critters add a little excitement and nice snacks for my cichlids.
  8. Wow alrighty! Lots to think about here. I will definitely check on if it's "tank safe" (leaves oil slicks) and do some more research on the brand as well. It's sounding like the flow will be fine as long as it's setup right though. Thanks everyone.
  9. Hey all, I recently (awhile back actually) picked up a 60g tank and am just getting around to setting it up. I have the heater, substrate, hood/lights, etc but I'm trying to make a decision on a filtration setup. I was at our local Home Hardware the other day and they had a canister filter designed for a pond on for half price, 160$. The price is fantastic but the flow-rate is published as 900gph. Is this too much? Is anyone else here running something over-filterered this badly? I'm really worried about the water movement since I will be going with a sand bottom and will be stocking with either Angelfish or with my Saulosi's which are ready for a larger tank. Thoughts?

    Hello All

Welcome! Lots of extremely knowledgeable members here.
  11. Woooh! I'm happy to see you guys coming together on this! I thought I'd just bring it to your attention despite the fact that I have no free tank space.
  12. Hi there. I was recently browsing Kijiji for deals and came across this: http://edmonton.kijiji.ca/c-pets-other-pets-for-sale-Fishtank-and-Fish-for-sale-GREAT-DEAL-W0QQAdIdZ316059994 He/she has a 30g tank with an 8" Oscar, a 2" Oscar, a Piranha, a Silver Dollar that is "huge", a 3" Jack Dempsey, and three "sucker fish". Someone save these fish please

    My Rcs

This may seem like a really ridiculous question, but did you buy standard RCS and then selectively breed them for the deep colors or did you purchase them that way? Thanks.
  14. I'm personally partial to large Catfish (probably too predatory for your purposes) and Cichlids (primarily SA Cichlids, also very predatory), so I won't be much help as far as suggestions go.
  15. Thanks! I'm a little embarassed about how dirty the tanks and floors are, but I was looking at them today and thought they deserved some pics.
  16. Another shot of the Texas Cichlid:
  17. Hey thanks! You should see her eat, it's always impressive! Side-note: I think I have my image posting issues all worked out now :P
  18. I feel pretty stupid, but I'm happy you took the time to walk me through that! Thanks again!
  19. Dammit! EDIT: I'm going to use this current post of mine to figure this out! Everyone bear with me, lol. EDIT 2: WOOT! Thanks man!
  20. LOL!! See what I mean?! But yeah, once I get it cleaned up a bit it'll look a lot better. This is a very temporary arrangement as our new house wasn't quite ready yet when we had to be out of our old house so we had to hurriedly move all of our fish and fish stuff over to the new place and lock it away in this single finished room in the house.. Major PITA.
  21. 30g with Saulosis - I realize that African Cichlids generally prefer a rockscape but this tank was originally meant for my wife's Angelfish, the Saulosi's have a 55g sitting in my garage that I haven't been able to set up yet. 25g with random Africans - The glass on the tank is embarassingly dirty so I will just post this single pic for now. Thanks for looking!
  22. Hi all, my wife and I are in the process of moving into a new home so excuse the mess in the tank room, but here is the beginnings to our tank-only room! This first pic here is just a from-the-door shot (again I apologize for the buckets and the drywall dust on the floor!) So now starting from the far left of the room room we have a 10g, a 20g, a 25g, a 55g, and finally a 30g. The pictures will be posted in that order for your viewing pleasure (or displeasure, I have no tripod for my camera and the glass is quite dirty). 10g - Full tank shot, you'll see I have some RCS in here as well as a ton of snails. Originally this was just going to be a snail-grow-op but a guy I know had RCS for an insane deal so of course I picked some up. 10g - More of the RCS 20g - There's Firemouth's in here as well as Convicts, Firemouths are extremely reclusive so I couldn't get any good pics here. They're all in the 1" to 2" range. 55g - Here are some pictures of my favorite fish, she's a Texas Cichlid as you can see and she's close to 10 years old. She's about 8 inches. Okay so I'm at my limit of pictures I can upload, I'd love to finish putting all the pics I have up, thoughts?
  23. Heh, I WAS going to post pictures of the new fish room I'm setting up in the place I'm moving into buuuut... What's the point?? Amazing setup. Love it. EDIT: Any stocking ideas for the 1600g or not sure yet?
