  1. I think he's cute too. Does anyone know what he is?
  2. So a 2L is good for 25 gallons? When I put it where ever it's going to rest, do I put it upright or on it's side? If it's upright will that stop deadly leakage into my tank? What does baking soda do? And thanks for your answers.
  3. A vampire (I think just one) pleco sold for about $110. The girl who bought had bought the butterfly pleco and I had never seen one so I went and talked to her and asked if I could see it. She said she was big into plecos, especially rare ones from Africa, so when other plecos went up for bid I watched her to see what she took. Lol she cashed out with her $55 butterfly and the vampire. Costly those plecos are.
  4. Ok so my tank is a 25 gallon. I haven't tested the pH in awhile but last time I did it was around 7.9. I plan on lowering the pH by the use of RO water though. I have the Coralife T-5 double linear strip full spectrum and 6700k plant lamps, 1.44 wpg, which sit about 5" above the waterline. After CO2 injection I hope there will be enough carbon dioxide that I can lower the lights without hair algae taking over again. If any other info would be helpful let me know. Ok what I want to do is make a CO2 injector. I don't know how, or how big to make it, or how much yeast to put into it, and when I make it I'd like to make it so that if something crazy happens it won't dump a bunch of CO2 into the tank and kill all the fish. I know there's a way and stuff, and I've found all the information I just would like some guidance on the more specific stuff.
  5. If you happen to live in south Calgary I have a bunch of pothos in my lizard cage, if you're willing to come and get them I'll be happy to just give you some cuttings. Saves having to go buy them.
  6. It was my first auction ever, nevermind being a fish one. I enjoyed myself, I learned a lot. Lol like next year I'll be unloading some of the stuff I don't use anymore, and I'll be sure to bring plants and rocks to sell. Anyways today I was just buying, and talking to people. I'm moved here pretty recently and everyone I've met at school gives me funny looks when I start getting enthusiastic about my fish. So it was nice to talk to people who are also fish crazy. Anyways, I bought some Rotala roundfolio, Cryptocoryne wendtii, Java fern, Java Moss and a very nice Bolbtis heudelotii. I also went for a few killis and bristlenose plecos, but they went higher than I was willing to pay. Oh yes and a fish breeder so I can keep my feeders in the same tank as my leaf fish without 15 feeders disappearing in 4 days. Lol and a funny story, we weren't really paying attention and a book was being auctioned, and my boyfriend could make out "tropical" in the title, and saw pictures of plants on the cover, so he said, oh, a plant book. So I bid on it and it's just a beginner tropical fish book. Lol, lesson today; don't bid on something unless you know what it is. Anyways, how was it for everyone else?
  7. Lol you should just take the fish to a proper home and replace it with those glass fish that are attached to a glass bubble by some thread. You can tell her they're more her maintence level.
  8. I want to breed leo's and do a re-introduction thingy. I think that would be awesome. I also want to move to Brazil when I finish school for a year or two and study life on the Amazon river.
  9. I am in Calgary. Are you talking about the leo's in Vancouver? Lol and my registration with the Winnipeg site is pending, I really want these fish. They are so beautiful.
  10. Riverfront is a little too expensive for my liking. We've bought 2 really gorgeous motoras from gold's but they've both died before we even picked them up. Plus I suspect that Dennis is mislabelling things purposely. He had the one motora labelled as a pearl. I agreed on the $400 because it was an extra gorgeous marbled motora. He also has something labelled as a Hawian stingray, I've never heard of those before though and it looks a lot like a retic. Anyways, if anyone is interested he's selling his two tigers, but the male isn't eating very well so he doesn't think that one will make it. He says the female is doing well though. We've decided we aren't fond of what Calgary has to offer so we're looking elsewhere.
  11. Some nice looking motoras would be good to start with. I would adore a pair of Leopoldi's (I'm well aware of how hard they are to get now lol). The boyfriend wants Tigers but I'm not really fond of that idea, and he wants Henlei's too. I'd settle for Henlei's if Leo's prove impossible.
  12. Does anyone know of a Canadian company/individual who breeds and sells freshwater stingrays?
  13. ...when you take a $2000 loan so you can finish building your pride and joy fishtank! Yeah all for the stingrays.
  14. Just an update, the little RTC is eating good now. Maybe a little too good, he was stealing food from the stingrays. With a little bullying from the stingrays and the tongs we use to feed them though, he's learned to clear out and he'll get his food when the rays are done. He's in a 300 gallon right now, with plans in the works for an indoor tropical pond of 5000 gallons.
  15. You are a lucky one. That's my favorite catfish and I'd die to own one! I think I might have to build a tropical pond in the basement first though... :D
  16. Ok so I recently bought a red tailed cat from pisces and I have it in with a senegal bichir. I try to feed the poor little cat meaty pellets but everytime I throw one in and the cat goes for it the bichir swims up, bites the rtc on the nose, and steals the food. I'm really suprised by this. The rtc is like 3 times as wide as the bichir, although the bichir has it beat in length. Anyways, any suggestions of feeding the rtc? Do you think once it's more settled into the tank it'll be a little more aggressive for food? I've had it for about 5 days now. Thanks.
  17. I'm intrigued by these cone snails of which you speak. Anyone got a link?
  18. Ok so at Petsmart there's this tank that works as a general vivarium, although you can fill it half with water and then there are steps leading up to a second level so it can be half water half land. I was thinking of buying that and fiddler crabs. I don't really know a lot about fiddler crabs and good quality care information is hard to come by. I know they need brackish water and I know they should have a source of calcium for healthy shell growth. But that's about all I know. So I have questions. I've never done brackish or salt water before. How do I make sure I have the right amount of salt? Won't water evaporate leaving too much salt? Do I have to buy a meter thingy? Should I use aquarium salt or marine salt, or does it matter? What do they eat? Do they need live food or will blood worms and stuff be alright? I use they like water on the hard side, what temperature should it be? If I put plants like java fern (I plan on having not so special lighting) will the crabs demolish them? How many should I keep? I'm not sure about the tank capacity, it looks kind of 20 gallon long sized, with about a third of it to be filled with water. I might be off with the size, and it has a bow front. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and knows the size it would be great if you could correct me. Ok I think that's all my questions for now, thanks in advance if anyone knows anything.
  19. I agree with what was said about the just keep 3 puffers in there... although if you get hooked like I did you may have to upgrade the tank to fit more in. Anyways, really they just need things to break up their line of sight. Petsmart has fairly cheap nice looking fake plants. Or if you want real plants those are pretty cheap there too. If they spend lots of time swimming along the glass they're probably bored. :P It's really cute to watch them explore their tank lol. Tankmates really depends on the personality of your fish. Mine are pretty passive, although for awhile I bought some gibbled looking ones from Pisces and they were kind of mean. Anyways mine leave my otos alone. I also have amano shrimp in there to clean up uneaten food and they also get left alone. At first the puffers seemed kind of interested but the shrimp waved their tiny claws at them and now the puffers leave them alone. I've also had filter shrimp in there before, which are pretty defenseless, and they got left alone too. Although maybe their size intimidated the puffers lol.
  20. We have some montana red rock. Will it do anything to the water? I hear there's quite a bit of iron in it, could it leak out and hurt the fish? Also, it's going in a tank with stingrays. The rocks are too big and heavy, and the tank is too tall to glue the rock together or anything, so would it be ok just stacked up? Or are the stingrays going to knock it over and hurt someone? Thanks.
  21. Lol I was going to suggest a leaf fish too. Nandids are pretty cool looking. And they eat fish. And you could get two that would be fine in a 20 gal for life. Dwarf puffers don't eat fish, but are still very interesting predators. I have 4 and I'd highly recommend them.
